The two men grappled with each other, exchanging punches, each blow landing solidly.
Harry Williams, fueled by a bit of alcohol, slammed David Smith onto the hood of the car.
"Go for it!"
"Harry Williams, nice one!"
At this moment, David Smith was at a disadvantage, and the street racers began to jeer and cheer.
Luke Johnson was a bit nervous too, his right hand resting on the grip of his gun, ready to support David Smith at any moment. But these dozen or so street racers weren’t easy to deal with either—Luke Johnson was sure they were armed as well.
David Smith shoved the curly-haired man away and countered with a punch.
The curly-haired man was skilled at street fighting. He kicked David Smith in the stomach, knocking him to the ground, then viciously kicked him twice more.
David Smith grabbed the curly-haired man’s leg and executed a takedown, using his body weight to deliver two powerful elbow strikes.
The two heavy elbow strikes left the curly-haired man dazed. David Smith flipped him over and cuffed his hands behind his back.
David Smith hauled the curly-haired Harry Williams up and patted his head. "Kid, you fought well. Now come home with me."
A tattooed man blocked the front of the car, seemingly trying to stop Harry Williams from being taken away.
David Smith cursed, "Get out of the way, you idiot."
Luke Johnson immediately drew his gun and threatened, "You want to be taken away too, or do you want to eat a peanut?"
The bearded man came over and pushed aside his tattooed companion. "It was a fair fight. You can take him."
David Smith shoved the curly-haired man into the car. "You can brag to your cellmates about your heroic deeds today."
Under the angry glares of the street racers, the car sped away.
Luke Johnson was driving in the front seat and asked, "How do you feel?"
David Smith wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. "Much better."
Luke Johnson warned, "Don’t let it happen again."
"Why do I feel like you’re sounding more and more like Captain Susan Smith?"
"Because I finally understand why the Captain transferred from Internal Affairs to Robbery and Homicide."
"Are you trying to suck up to the Captain? Uh oh..." David Smith grinned, pulling at the wound on his lip.
"You’re right. If you want a promotion, it’s not enough to just solve cases—you have to know how to suck up too. It’s like walking on two legs."
David Smith looked surprised. "You’ve figured it out."
"What else? If you keep being reckless and violent like you, you’ll get burned sooner or later if you don’t change your ways."
"I know, I get what you mean. But some things... never mind... Anyway, thanks." David Smith turned his head and looked at the curly-haired man beside him. "Hey, I remember your name is Harry Williams."
"Harry Williams·萨博."
"Congratulations. In front of your buddies, you’ve earned yourself a felony for assaulting a police officer. When you get back to the gang, you’ll definitely win a skull jacket. Happy?"
"Of course. I’ll be sure to thank you properly in prison."
"Haha, don’t be so bitter. How about we have a nice chat? If it goes well, maybe you won’t have to go to prison."
Harry Williams looked wary. "What do you want? I won’t betray the gang."
"No one’s asking you to be a traitor. I just want you to find out some information about someone."
"Who?"
"Tony Williams·威尔. Does that ring a bell?"
Harry Williams thought for a moment. "A white guy in his fifties, junkie, lives in the house east of the bar."
"That’s him. I want to know everything about him, especially what can’t be found in the records."
Harry Williams was a bit incredulous. "You arrested me just to look into that loser?"
"That’s right. As long as you can find him, I’ll let you go."
"Using this kind of tactic—you’re a real lunatic."
Luke Johnson laughed. "You got that right, he is a lunatic. So you’d better do as he says. Otherwise... you’re on your own."
Harry Williams confirmed, "If I help you find Tony Williams, you’ll really let me go?"
"Of course."
"Why are you after him?"
"We’re investigating a Taser robbery case. He’s very likely the suspect."
Harry Williams said, "I can help you, but I don’t know much about him. You’ll have to let me go first so I can find out where he is."
David Smith unlocked the handcuffs and handed him a business card. "If you find any leads on Tony Williams, contact me immediately."
Harry Williams rubbed his wrist. "Once I find a lead on Tony Williams, we’re even. I won’t help you with anything else."
"If you don’t find any valuable leads, I’ll personally bring you back in. Take it seriously, got it?"
"I don’t care whether that guy lives or dies. Trading his info for my freedom doesn’t cost me a thing."
David Smith nodded. "You’re a smart guy."
"Hope you keep your word."
"We will."
Luke Johnson drove the car to a secluded spot and let Harry Williams out.
Watching Harry Williams leave, Luke Johnson asked, "You just let him go like that? Aren’t you afraid he’ll go back on his word?"
"He wouldn’t dare."
David Smith said indifferently, "If he really does, I’ll spread the word that the reason he didn’t get sent to prison is because he became a police informant.
When that happens, I won’t have to do a thing—the street racers will take care of him."
Chapter Fourteen: The Invitation
Police Detective Bureau, Robbery and Homicide Division.
Luke Johnson and David Smith entered the office one after the other.
