Volume One: The Newborn Calf

Chapter One: Rebirth

In 2012, in the metropolis of Shanghai, cars came and went, the city changed every day, yet somehow seemed unchanged, with nothing but the same unappealing concrete and steel buildings as far as the eye could see.

“Get lost! You don’t know what’s good for you. You actually want our boss to invest in you? What a joke, you don’t even know the rules!”

“Get out, all of you! Hah, you want my artists to have dinner with you? Who do you think I, Michael Bolton, am? I’m an agent, not a madam running a brothel!”

“Stop pretending to be so pure. With your attitude, any artist who follows you is doomed to bad luck for eight lifetimes. You’ll never make them famous!”

“Not making it big is still better than being ruined by beasts like you!”

“Ha! Calling me a beast? Then I’ll show you what a beast can do. Someone, throw this arrogant brat out for me! Don’t kill him, but if you cripple him, I’ll take responsibility!”

Michael Bolton wandered aimlessly down the street, blood trickling from his forehead, seeping into the corner of his eye and staining his vision red.

The intense pain couldn’t even bring him clarity. It was over. Everything was over. His company was about to go bankrupt! As an agent, he had never failed so badly. After painstakingly training an artist, he failed before even debuting. His original partner had withdrawn investment, and the artist had left as well.

Gradually, Michael Bolton’s mind grew weaker and weaker, and he slowly lost consciousness.

……

The endless stream of traffic, the familiar streets, the blue-and-white school uniform he hadn’t worn in years, and the black backpack on his back all left Michael Bolton feeling disoriented.

“What are you doing, Orange!” A familiar teasing voice snapped Michael Bolton back to reality.

Looking up, Michael Bolton saw a chubby boy of about seventeen or eighteen, fair-skinned and broad, looking at him with some confusion.

“Fatty!” Michael Bolton blurted out. Wasn’t that his best friend from high school, Fatty, William Harris?

Ever since high school, everyone had gone their separate ways. He hadn’t seen Fatty in a long time, only occasionally keeping in touch by phone. Why was he here, still wearing a school uniform to look young? No, he really was young—he looked only seventeen or eighteen.

He’s really kept himself well, Michael Bolton thought. Although he always claimed to have the body of a young master but the fate of a servant, and his skin was always good—envied by many girls in class—he’d never looked this young. He was already in his twenties, but now looked just seventeen or eighteen.

“What are you doing, spacing out? Hurry up, we’re going to be late!” William Harris said quickly when he saw Michael Bolton acting ‘dumb.’

“Late…” Seeing their school uniforms, the familiar street, and the little shop by the road that should have closed down, Michael Bolton suddenly realized something.

It was like a bolt of lightning—his mind went blank!

He had been reborn!

Heaven had given him a second chance!

“Fatty, what year is it?” Michael Bolton asked.

“You’ve read too many time-travel novels. Asking what year it is? Today is New Year’s Day, January 1st, 2007!” William Harris replied impatiently. “Seriously, why is it that the underclassmen get a holiday, but we seniors are doomed to suffer?”

January 1st, 2007—five years ago, at the end of the first semester of senior year. For students, it was a hellish time, but for those who had graduated, it was a period they remembered with a smile.

Thinking of this, a smile appeared on Michael Bolton’s face. This was the rebirth so many people dreamed of!

Those years called youth, the age when you could squander your youth recklessly!

Youth is like toilet paper—it looks like you have a lot, but before you know it, it’s gone!

“You’re still smiling? If you don’t pass the final exam this time, what are you going to do?” William Harris said.

William Harris’s words suddenly unlocked memories in Michael Bolton’s mind. In fact, Michael Bolton’s grades had been good at least up until junior high. It wasn’t until ninth grade, after he started reading novels, that he quickly went downhill. But thanks to his solid foundation, even after a year without opening a book, he still easily got into City No. 3 High School, the city’s top school, and even into the honors class. But after entering high school, still obsessed with novels and music, he quickly fell behind, his grades getting worse and worse. By the time classes were divided in sophomore year, he switched to the liberal arts class he was better at, but it was just the regular class among the three liberal arts classes.
