Chapter 13

Brian Carter was still in a daze, not knowing what had just happened, when Lily Smith was already shouting excitedly, “It’s the Undying Tree! It really is the Undying Tree! The bloodline you awakened is from the Undying Tree—this is one of the 138 sub-bloodlines!”

Brian Carter had a vague sense that something wasn’t quite right, but he kept silent, didn’t mention what he had seen, and had no intention of discussing the matter with anyone. He had a faint feeling that he might have stumbled upon something extraordinary.

Lily Smith was so excited she was practically jumping, pointing out to him the strange tree on the Haoji Sky Stele that was continuously emitting a faint glow.

Brian Carter remembered this tree very well—it was the giant tree from which the ninth cluster of cloud light had casually snapped off a branch. He didn’t feel any sense of kinship or blood connection to this tree at all; instead, he felt a faint hunger, as if he wanted to peel off its bark and cook it to eat.

Chapter 10 Lord Carter of the Carter Estate (Part 1)

Brian Carter himself thought this idea was too absurd. Even if he turned into a monster, he had no intention of changing his diet to eat trees and grass. He quickly shook off the thought and didn’t dwell on it.

Lily Smith excitedly pulled him around the Haoji Sky Stele, heading straight for the office area of the Kyoto Monster Affairs Institute.

The place looked thoroughly modern, with all kinds of advanced office equipment—even more high-tech than the leaked office photos of top companies like Google, Oracle, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple. The only difference was that in this huge office, there were only three or five people, making it seem extremely deserted. Every staff member looked relaxed and lazy, just like in the most advanced tech companies, rather than the top administrative institution for monsters in North City.

Lily Smith found one of the staff members. Since she had made an online appointment, it took only about ten seconds for a high-tech, transparent card with gold trim to be handed to Brian Carter.

When Lily Smith saw this monster registration card, she exclaimed in surprise, “I’ve been awakened for over ten years and only managed to get a silver card, but you just awakened and already got a gold card. Is a sub-bloodline really that advantageous?”

Brian Carter was a little surprised and asked, “This is a gold card? Didn’t you say I’d definitely get a juvenile card?”

The staff member who received them was quite responsible, smiled slightly, and explained, “A sub-bloodline is already quite impressive, especially the Undying Tree bloodline, which is extremely rare even among sub-bloodlines. But the reason he can get a monster registration gold card isn’t just because he awakened a sub-bloodline—it’s also because his demon power value already meets the gold card standard. If the Haoji Sky Stele hadn’t detected his bloodline inheritance just now, he could have even gotten a platinum card.”

Lily Smith took a long, surprised breath, seemed to realize something, quickly covered her mouth, and nodded vigorously, accepting this explanation.

Brian Carter turned the monster registration gold card over and over in his hands for a while, muttering, “It’s just a monster registration certificate anyway—what difference does the grade make?”

Lily Smith gently tapped his head, saying with a hint of envy, “The monster registration gold card comes with more privileges. You’ll find out the benefits of those privileges later. Besides being an ID, the gold card is also a small smart device—the transparent card body can serve as a screen, and all operations can be done via touch. The silver card, which is one level lower, doesn’t have this function.”

Brian Carter responded with a couple of “oh”s, still not really understanding, but he did get that this thing could serve as a smart device. He curiously fiddled with it for a while and even asked the staff how to use it. Suddenly, he saw a young man hurrying out from inside. When this young man saw Brian Carter and Lily Smith, he paused for a moment, then smiled at them—it was the same high school-looking boy they had met on the subway.

Brian Carter couldn’t help but wave and called out, “Are you here to take care of some business too?”

The handsome, high school-looking boy was a bit surprised, then smiled and said, “I’m not here for business—I work here.”

Brian Carter couldn’t help but marvel, exclaiming, “You’re not much older than me, and you’re already working? The benefits of being a monster are really good. I wish I could get assigned a job like you, working in such a relaxed place and never having to go to school again. Do you have nothing to do every day except surf the internet and play games before clocking out? How’s the monthly pay? Is it higher than the average salary in North City?”

Brian Carter didn’t notice at all that all the staff in the Kyoto Monster Affairs Institute office area had changed expressions, staring at him with eyes that looked like they could shoot fire, mixed with a bit of fear. Their previous ordinary white-collar demeanor was gone, as was their earlier laziness.

The handsome, high school-looking boy laughed and said, “If you want to work here, you can! I can help arrange a job for you. The Kyoto Monster Affairs Institute is always short-staffed—everyone prefers a lazy lifestyle and doesn’t like working in government agencies like this.”

Brian Carter was overjoyed and casually said, “You’re so young and already working here, and you can even arrange for people to join. Your family must be really influential…”
