Chapter 17

The two sides were on the verge of a showdown, about to fight, when suddenly a sharp, shrill voice screeched, “Dare to make a move in my Grandma Carter’s place—have you thought about the consequences? Two little demons who together aren’t even three hundred years old, you sure are bold!”

The fierce burly man and the sinister middle-aged man in the old military uniform both looked tense. The sinister man in the old military uniform lowered his voice and said, “We’re from the Storm Legion. Grandma Carter, even if you have the support of the Ten Thousand Demons Society, what can you really do to us?”

Grandma Carter’s voice remained piercingly sharp, cackling, “Do you really think you can get the Storm Legion to come make trouble for me? Since when did the Four Great Legions have the guts to openly provoke our Ten Thousand Demons Society? I am the guardian spirit of the eighteenth residential area in North City. If the Storm Legion dares to touch me, they should be worried about the Ten Thousand Demons Society’s retaliation.”

Chapter Twelve: The Ninefold Muscle-Easing Technique

Brian Carter suddenly found it a bit funny. These two demons were fierce and domineering, but as soon as a fight was about to break out, they started invoking the powers behind them. They didn’t seem like demons at all—more like those privileged second-generation officials among humans, who always think of their powerful backers and connections when trouble arises.

The fierce burly man and the sinister middle-aged man in the old military uniform argued a few more words, but Grandma Carter suddenly flew into a rage and shouted, “What are you babbling about? I told you to get lost, so get lost! Our Ten Thousand Demons Society is the world’s largest demon organization, full of experts, far stronger than the Storm Legion. If you cause trouble here, no matter where you take the case, I’ll be in the right.”

Suddenly, a black vortex appeared in the sky above Demon Locust Street. The face of an extremely ugly old woman flickered in and out of the vortex. With a shrill cackle, she reached a monstrous hand out of the black vortex, grabbed the two demons, and flung them away as if they were rags.

Brian Carter watched as the two demons, who had just been so fierce and intimidating, were tossed away like scraps in an instant. The shock in his heart was like a raging storm. The demon aura Grandma Carter had just released, though only a small part, was at least a hundred times stronger than that of the two Storm Legion demons. No wonder she was an old demon with thousands of years of cultivation.

The strange phenomenon above Demon Locust Street vanished in a flash, and the blue sky and white clouds returned.

Brian Carter withdrew his gaze, and as soon as he turned around, he saw a short old woman looking at him kindly. Her ugly face was exactly that of Grandma Carter, who had just driven away the two Storm Legion demons.

“Young one! Are you feeling confused, thinking what they said made sense?”

Brian Carter looked up at the sky, still a bit shaken, but firmly shook his head and said, “I don’t yearn for the life they talked about, nor do I want to join the Storm Legion. I haven’t figured out what the future should be like, but I’m sure I don’t want to fight and kill, or join any demon legion.”

Grandma Carter smiled slightly and said, “Young one! You’re right. It’s not yet time for you to worry about the future. Grandma Carter can give you three pieces of advice: Before you’ve seen much of the world, never decide lightly to stay in one place forever. Never give up the pursuit of strength for any reason. I’ve seen too many peace-loving demons deceived by all sorts of false reasons, giving up their pursuit of power, only to be surpassed and killed by those who were once weaker than them. The last piece of advice is: every organization has an ugly side, no matter how lofty their ideals.”

Grandma Carter’s words were only half understood by Brian Carter, but that didn’t stop him from bowing deeply in gratitude to her, because he could clearly feel that this old woman truly cared for him—let alone the fact that Grandma Carter had just saved him.

Grandma Carter looked at Brian Carter with loving eyes, her figure gradually fading away, leaving behind only a shrill cackle.

Only after Grandma Carter disappeared did Brian Carter suddenly cry out, “Oh no! I’m going to be late getting home today and Mom will scold me!”

He grabbed his backpack and ran home. As he left Demon Locust Street, he had a faint feeling that someone was watching him, but Brian Carter didn’t pay it any mind. He ran with all his might, rushing home as fast as he could.

To Brian Carter’s surprise, his mother hadn’t come home yet, so the scene of being scolded didn’t happen.

Brian Carter didn’t feel relieved, though. His mother usually came home early, so he was a bit worried and called her. When she answered, her voice sounded tired. She asked a few simple questions, then said she was still working overtime and would be home soon, and told Brian Carter to make his own dinner.

Brian Carter wasn’t really hungry. Ever since he reincarnated as a demon, his need for food had become strange—he almost never felt hungry anymore. But if he let himself go, he figured he could eat a lot, at least ten times more than before.

Brian Carter quickly finished his homework for the day, then began to reflect on everything that had happened. It all seemed so bizarre and unbelievable. He thought to himself, “What’s so special about the Undying Tree bloodline I awakened, that made the Storm Legion try to force me to join? They said the Ten Thousand Demons Society wants me to become a guardian spirit like Grandma Carter, to build the nineteenth demon residential area in North City. Is that really true? The Ten Thousand Demons Society doesn’t seem to care much about me—no one has said anything to me from start to finish…”
