As the blade flashed, the thick tails of two giant one-horned worms were severed on the spot. The headless one-horned worm immediately collapsed to the ground. Though it thrashed desperately, it was left with nothing but futile struggle.
The one-horned worm that still had its head, on the other hand, frantically burrowed into the ground.
"Kill!"
With a furious shout, Evan Clark brought his hands together on the blade, and the crimson blade light slashed heavily into the earth. Dark green blood gushed out in torrents.
After withdrawing his blade and stepping back, Evan Clark's face was a bit pale. Clearly, the recent attack had cost him a lot of strength.
Once the headless and tailless one-horned worm finally stopped struggling, Evan Clark looked at Eric Turner in surprise and asked, "You awakened your bloodline?"
Awakened his bloodline? Eric Turner knew very well that he hadn't. But his recent performance was a far cry from how he had acted at the survival point.
After hesitating for a moment, Eric Turner pretended to be uncertain and said, "I don't know, I... I was just fighting for my life."
"Great opportunities arise between life and death!" Evan Clark suddenly said. "Among us humans, many who were thought unlikely to awaken have done so in the face of life and death."
"Eric Turner, maybe you're one of the lucky ones!"
At this, he glanced around. "Did Edward Thompson run off?"
"Edward Thompson was swallowed by that one-horned worm!" Eric Turner pointed at the half-buried one-horned worm.
Evan Clark's face remained calm, but his eyes were full of reluctance.
"In the field team, among those who hadn't awakened their bloodline, Edward Thompson was one of the longest survivors. I didn't expect him to die here." As Evan Clark spoke, he pulled the half-buried one-horned worm out of the ground and carefully cut open its stomach sac.
Edward Thompson was covered in blue stomach acid. Because he hadn't been swallowed for long, his body hadn't decayed, but he was already not breathing.
Just moments ago, Edward Thompson had still been talking to Eric Turner.
"Though the one-horned worm is low-level, it also has a beast core. Eric Turner, remember, most beast cores are in the head."
As he spoke, Evan Clark split open the head of a one-horned worm with a single stroke and took out a yellowish beast core.
"The other beast core is yours." Evan Clark pointed at the horned head of the other one-horned worm. "However, the sharp horn and the hide belong to the survival point."
"Of course, the survival point will give you points for them."
Keeping the beast core and exchanging the materials for points at the survival point was acceptable. Imitating Evan Clark, Eric Turner spent a full ten minutes before finally extracting a similarly yellowish beast core.
This beast core was a bit inferior to the one Tiger Girl had given Eric Turner.
After helping Evan Clark gather the materials from the two one-horned worms, Evan Clark finally said, "Edward Thompson is dead. From now on, you and I will finish the patrol together."
"As for Edward Thompson's body, the two of us will carry it back to the settlement later."
"Here, it won't be long before it becomes food for the beasts."
Eric Turner nodded, feeling much more at ease. Evan Clark's presence made him feel much safer.
Evan Clark was not a talkative person. Though he took the lead while patrolling with Eric Turner, he remained silent the whole time.
At sunset, Eric Turner and Evan Clark arrived at the entrance outside the settlement, carrying Edward Thompson's corpse.
At the entrance, more than a dozen people were already waiting. The most eye-catching among them was a young man in a black combat uniform. He wasn't very old, looking to be in his twenties, but his whole demeanor gave off a chilling aura.
Though the others stood near him, none dared to approach.
"Edward Thompson is dead!" Upon seeing Eric Turner and Evan Clark, the young man suddenly shouted at Eric Turner, "He's dead—why aren't you?"
The question was aggressive!
In the original host's memory, there was no mention of this person. Although Eric Turner didn't want to stand out, he now understood the rules of survival in this world and knew that at this moment, he absolutely could not back down.
"I'm just lucky!"
The young man was about to speak again, but Evan Clark calmly said, "Eric Turner seems to have awakened some bloodline under the threat of death."
At these words, the gazes fixed on Eric Turner grew even more intense. Someone even blurted out, "Really?"
The young man scrutinized Eric Turner, as if trying to see what kind of bloodline Eric Turner had awakened.
At this moment, Eric Turner's heart was anything but calm. Although he had obtained a beast core, the energy was still not enough to create even a basic Lucky Card.
"What bloodline?" The young man's voice was still cold, but his expression had become much more serious.
"I don't know," Evan Clark said quietly. "The signs aren't obvious yet. Hopefully, he'll awaken a powerful bloodline—then our settlement will have more hope."
