Chapter 11

He would get tired too, and occasionally the thought of “I don’t want to study anymore” would pop up. After all, he already knew a lot of information ahead of time; even if he didn’t go to school, as long as he seized one or two opportunities, he could live better than before. Not to mention, things like housing prices, the stock market, and gold prices could make someone rich overnight. If that didn’t work, when the time came, he could just mail in the Olympic torch design or the design for the China Pavilion at the World Expo and still gain a bit of fame. Once you’re famous, is there any need to worry about profit?

Even in the worst-case scenario, even if he failed at everything for the next ten years, by 2014, with the winning lottery numbers in his hand, he would definitely become a millionaire or even a multi-millionaire. At the same time, he warned himself that even if he knew the numbers, he should only buy two tickets at most. If he bought too many, the lottery center might just change the numbers.

However, these thoughts were quickly dismissed by David Bennett himself.

He couldn’t bear to let his parents down.

He didn’t want his past self to have at least gotten into a second-tier university and made his parents happy for a few days, only to live life over again and end up failing, making his parents lose face in front of relatives.

Besides, whether it was playing the stock market, speculating in gold, or hoarding houses, all of it required initial capital. Where would the money come from? Rely on his parents? Was he supposed to ask his parents to sell their property to give him a shot after failing the college entrance exam? What if he lost?

Maybe you don’t learn much in college, but at the very least, it’s a stepping stone, and it could give David Bennett a relatively free space, without worrying about his parents—who knew him best—seeing through his odd behavior. Especially since, if he just worked hard for another twenty days or so and got into Dongsen University, in just a few dozen days, he could see Shawn Harris.

David Bennett was a man who had experienced women, and now, in this young and vigorous body, there was a moment when he slipped into a crimson fantasy.

Two rows in front of David Bennett sat a girl named Scott Dalton. Her grades were average, her looks weren’t particularly outstanding, and she was usually very low-key, not attracting much attention in class. But from David Bennett’s current perspective, those long legs in jeans, the perfect hips, the well-developed, modern-looking chest, and the beautiful shoulders—her figure was simply off the charts. He believed that in a few years, this girl’s charm would leave the current class favorites far behind.

Convincing himself he was just giving his brain a break, David Bennett stared at Scott Dalton and daydreamed for a full ten minutes. He couldn’t help but sigh: the girls that Howard Payne and the others chased after every day, causing chaos and showing off, might have pretty faces, but overall, they didn’t even come close to this one. What’s this called? This is called the one that slipped through the net, the bad girl saved for college!

After that day, David Bennett’s attention shifted from his “best buddy” Henry Jordan to the “off-the-charts girl” Scott Dalton. Over time, David Bennett noticed that this girl was very pleasant to look at. She was always disciplined and proper in class, with textbooks and workbooks always in fixed places. She had a few close girlfriends she went in and out of the classroom with, and kept a certain distance from the boys.

In the eyes of 33-year-old David Bennett, no matter how mature a girl was, she was still just a little girl.

It didn’t take long before his attention shifted to the class’s politics teacher.

The politics teacher, just over thirty, was surnamed Qian. She had short hair, and her features gave off a very formidable vibe—and she really was formidable, with a sharp tongue when scolding people. But David Bennett noticed one of her strengths: she was very sexy.

Ever since discovering two eye-pleasing targets, David Bennett found studying much less boring. What he didn’t know was that his gaze was a bit too direct, a bit too brazen. The politics teacher was fine—after all, everyone’s eyes were on her during class, so no one noticed David Bennett. But it was different with Scott Dalton; at the very least, Dylan Gordon quickly noticed that David Bennett seemed to be interested in Scott Dalton.

Dylan Gordon felt he couldn’t keep up with David Bennett’s thinking. Why now? The college entrance exam is just a few weeks away, and you still have the mind for this?

Scott Dalton also sensed that David Bennett had been paying attention to her lately.

Women’s intuition is just that mysterious. At first, she just felt someone was watching her from behind, but later, when she entered the classroom and met David Bennett’s gaze, she knew it was him.

Scott Dalton liked boys with big eyes, and David Bennett wasn’t really her type. But that didn’t stop her from feeling delighted at being admired. She was a precocious girl, and the reality of soon graduating loosened her restraint, even giving her a strange sense of mischief.

In the days that followed, whenever she went out with her girlfriends and David Bennett was in the classroom, Scott Dalton would find a chance to sneak a glance at David Bennett. When returning to the classroom, her eyes would also sweep over David Bennett’s seat.

David Bennett understood the look in Scott Dalton’s eyes—it was a kind of teasing, maybe even a challenge, but definitely not affectionate. So David Bennett withdrew his gaze and buried himself in his books.

After noticing that David Bennett was no longer chasing her with his eyes, Scott Dalton felt a sense of loss.

It was better during class, but during self-study, she kept wanting to turn around to see if he was looking at her, yet tried hard to control herself, afraid someone would discover her secret.

Thinking about it in private, she realized this guy was actually pretty cute, and if she compared him to the other boys in class, she’d find that David Bennett’s gaze was calm, confident, and focused—completely different from the others. A few times, Scott Dalton secretly observed David Bennett as he daydreamed, and felt he was like a deep sea, with countless colorful treasures hidden beneath the surface.
