Chapter 19

Hearing someone volunteer to sing, the guitar was immediately passed over.

Slinging the guitar over his shoulder, David Bennett sat on Scott Dalton's desk, tried a few notes, then thought for a moment.

None of the classmates had ever heard David Bennett sing, nor did they know he could play the guitar. Watching him hold the guitar so confidently but not making a sound for a long time, they all felt anxious for him.

After a few simple notes, David Bennett began to sing.

“I’m afraid I won’t have the chance

To say goodbye to you

Because maybe I’ll never see you again

Tomorrow I have to leave

This familiar place and you

We have to part

And my tears start to fall”

At this point, David Bennett turned his head and winked at Scott Dalton with a smile.

David Bennett started this song in a higher key than Zhang Zhenyue, and as he continued, he became fully immersed in the music.

He was somewhat lost in thought; the classroom before his eyes disappeared, and David Bennett felt as if he were singing in a place shrouded in dim light, with the scenery around him constantly spinning and changing. For a moment, he couldn’t tell if he was unwinding in a KTV after a week of work, or competing in a singing battle across the hallway in his senior class.

“I will firmly remember your face

I will cherish the longing you gave me

These days will never be erased from my heart

I can’t promise you

Whether I’ll come back again

No looking back

I’ll keep moving forward without looking back”

Scott Dalton had been listening to the song with a smile, but as she listened, her eyes unknowingly turned red.

A few lively students in the class spontaneously clapped along to David Bennett’s rhythm, and Scott Dalton lifted her head and joined in the clapping as well.

The more David Bennett sang, the better he felt. Unlike the classmate who had sung earlier with a serious face, he sang with a smile.

Later, with one foot on a chair, his body and the guitar moving to the beat, as he reached the climax, David Bennett felt as if a breath of stale air had been shouted out of his body, and his whole being felt clearer and lighter.

“……”

“I will firmly remember your face

I will cherish the longing you gave me

These days will never be erased from my heart

I can’t promise you whether I’ll come back again

No looking back

I’ll keep moving forward without looking back

No looking back

I’ll keep moving forward without looking back”

“……”

David Bennett returned the guitar to Dean Young and sat down next to Scott Dalton.

Scott Dalton asked him, “Whose song is this?”

David Bennett wasn’t sure if Zhang Zhenyue’s “Goodbye” had been released at this time, so he told Scott Dalton, “It’s a secret.”

Thus, the mysterious coolness of 2001 was born.

Actually, many students couldn’t relate to the mood of this song, but they genuinely thought it sounded great and that the boy singing seemed really impressive.

David Bennett deliberately asked Scott Dalton, “Pretty awesome, right?”

Scott Dalton stared at him blankly, not saying a word.

After a restless evening, the senior class finally quieted down. Everyone packed up their things, getting ready to head home.

Before leaving the classroom, David Bennett walked over to ask Henry Jordan, “Are you coming to school tomorrow?”

Henry Jordan nodded and said, “Yes.”

Chapter 0011: Settling Henry Jordan

David Bennett emptied his own backpack and helped Scott Dalton pack the books and exercises she needed to take home.

The two of them silently rode to the bottom of Scott Dalton’s building. Scott Dalton lived on the 4th floor; David Bennett accompanied her to the 3rd floor and let Scott Dalton carry the two backpacks up herself.

Afraid that David Bennett would just leave after dropping off the bags, Scott Dalton told him to wait for her at the entrance for a moment. David Bennett thought Scott Dalton just wanted to return his backpack.

From the very back of her desk, Scott Dalton found an envelope, used the excuse that she’d forgotten to lock her bike downstairs, and ran out from home.

After returning the backpack to David Bennett, Scott Dalton took the envelope from her pocket and handed it to him. David Bennett didn’t know what was inside and didn’t take it.

Scott Dalton grabbed David Bennett’s hand and pressed the envelope into it. “This is the 600 yuan I saved from New Year’s. You must try to find a way with Henry Jordan; this is a rare opportunity. If you don’t use it, return it to me after the exams.”

Before David Bennett could say anything, Scott Dalton turned and ran upstairs.

The heart that David Bennett had always thought was calm and composed was suddenly torn open.

After being reborn, David Bennett already had a vague plan for his new life—whom he would meet, whom he would walk with, whom he would join hands with—he had a simple outline for it all.

Now, David Bennett realized he didn’t know how to get along with Scott Dalton anymore. He didn’t know where to place this girl named Scott Dalton in his life.

If, as in his previous life, they never saw each other again after the college entrance exam, then at most it would be a case of deep feelings but shallow fate. But what if the feelings and the fate were both deep? How could he repay this affection? What should he do?

On the way home by bike, David Bennett thought about Scott Dalton for a while, then about how to talk to his mom about money again.

When he got home, the lights in his parents’ room were already off. David Bennett returned to his own room in disappointment, where there was bread and milk on the desk.

After lying in bed for a while, David Bennett sat at his desk to read for a bit more, only to find a stack of money and a note under a book in the center of the desk.

There was 1,500 yuan.

On the note was a line: “No matter what you want to do, I hope you think through the consequences before you do it.”

Putting the 2,100 yuan together and collecting his thoughts, David Bennett began his final systematic review of key knowledge points before the exam.
