Chapter 8

"This has nothing to do with lunatics, does it?" Jack Spencer wiped the rain off his face with his hand and flung it forcefully to the side.

"Because this kind of modification isn't that simple. Gradually, cybernetic bodies are no longer limited to weapons—they've started to develop into services."

"As long as you have enough money, you can modify your stomach so you don't need to eat or excrete, just install a nutrition box. You can even modify the ascending reticular formation in your brain so you don't need to sleep, and be energetic 24 hours a day."

"Isn't that even better? Technology is already this advanced? I kind of want to get a set myself." Jack Spencer was tempted as he listened. Is this the world of the future?

"Yeah, it really is better, but if you don't even need to eat or sleep, can you still be called human? As the differences grow, some people gradually stop seeing themselves as human and start to lose empathy. They think they're a higher form of existence. They call themselves cyborgs, but the public calls them cyber lunatics."

"It's not just a cognitive issue, actually. Mercenaries are like rats in the city, specializing in eating corpses and doing dirty work. They can't use the latest technology."

"Second-hand cybernetic bodies and mismatched parts cause rejection reactions and phantom limb pain. Many people even use drugs and inhibitors to suppress it, so even if they don't have cognitive issues, their mental state isn't great under the influence of these substances."

Chapter 6: Bullets Fly

The metal corridor that once trapped Jack Spencer was now completely twisted and deformed. The impact of the space station's landing must have been huge, and there were even burn marks in many places.

All sorts of parts that had been floating in the air were now scattered across the ground, including those robots. They all looked badly damaged, lying in pieces everywhere.

Rainwater kept dripping through the cracks, and puddles were starting to form on the ground.

Having survived the disaster, Jack Spencer led his robot Brian Carter through the wreckage of the space station, planning to leave the area and avoid the lunatics who would soon arrive.

But clearly, they were moving too slowly. A roaring sound came from above Jack Spencer's head—a spaceship burst through the rain and fog, heading their way.

The spaceship looked like an oversized, wheel-less supercar, covered all over with exaggerated graffiti. What shocked Jack Spencer even more was that a rotting corpse with its arms spread wide was tied to the front of the ship.

Jack Spencer wasn't seeing things—it really was a corpse! Maggots were already crawling out of the bullet holes in its face!

At this moment, Jack Spencer gained a whole new understanding of the so-called cyber lunatics Brian Carter had mentioned. No matter what, he absolutely did not want to be discovered by people like this.

"Quick! Hide, now!" Jack Spencer hurriedly pulled Brian Carter behind a piece of metal wreckage to hide.

As the spaceship with the corpse quickly flew past, another battered-looking helicopter arrived.

When it was still more than ten meters from the ground, the helicopter's door suddenly swung open. A man with a mohawk, both hands holding guns and his body covered in skull tattoos, leapt straight out.

In midair, he pulled the trigger and fired wildly in all directions, laughing maniacally with a mouth full of gold teeth. "Hahaha! nunarjuaq tittinaqtillugu!!"

As they got closer, Jack Spencer suddenly noticed that the man's legs and feet were clearly silver—they were obviously cybernetic.

With a dull "thud," the mohawked man crashed heavily onto the ruins of the space city. Then, several more similarly dressed people jumped out of the hovercar.

Voices came from their direction, but Jack Spencer couldn't understand a word.

"What are they saying?" Jack Spencer whispered to Brian Carter.

"Everyone connect to the local network, sync your locations, and get those damn drones out! Something this big crashed down—there's bound to be good stuff inside! Move it! Everyone else is heading this way. If you're too slow, you won't even get the scraps."

But before Brian Carter could finish translating, a shell came out of nowhere, trailing thick smoke as it shot up and blew the spaceship in the sky into a fireball.

"Damn! They just start shooting without a word! They really are lunatics!" Using the cover of the explosion, Jack Spencer quickly led Brian Carter away from the blast zone.

The atmosphere in the space station wreckage was growing more and more tense. With the explosions, more and more people were flying in, and the whole ruin was turning into a battlefield.

"Boom~!" Another explosion sounded, and a huge fireball fell from the sky, nearly grazing the two of them.

Danger was everywhere. Jack Spencer was on edge, looking at the environment and feeling bitter inside. "Why am I so unlucky? Trouble finds me wherever I go."

"Brian Carter, is there any weapon nearby?" Jack Spencer asked. In a situation like this, being unarmed was basically waiting to be slaughtered.

Brian Carter's face screen flickered, then he walked toward the wreckage on the left. "Yes, there's a security room over here."

After searching through the wreckage for a while, Brian Carter shoved a gray metallic rifle into Jack Spencer's hands.

"What is this?" Jack Spencer weighed the heavy, cold weapon in his hands.

"Model: SOR-11:3 Technical Assault Rifle. It's electric."

"How do I use it?" Looking at the deadly weapon in his hands, Jack Spencer's breathing grew rapid.
