Chapter 18

【Here they come!】

The riders straddled their warhorses, their bodies visible above the grass. The two groups were actually dressed quite similarly, mainly in animal and sheepskin coats, with only a few wearing linen clothes.

Among those being pursued, the one leading the charge was a young girl, with about twenty others seemingly protecting her.

The pursuers were shouting something. Henry Clark listened and started to piece things together: the group being chased was led by someone called Arthur Hayes, who seemed to be a princess or something of the The Hayes Family. The ones chasing them appeared to be from the Xiongnu Tiefu tribe.

Tiefu? That basically meant some Han man had become the son-in-law of a foreign tribe, and then that Han man established his own clan or tribe. The nomads generally referred to such forces as the Tiefu tribe.

  【Closer, getting closer and closer...】

Henry Clark's attention was entirely on the map. After so much practice, he could already read the scale at a glance. Sensing the time was right, he shouted, “Loose arrows!”

For the system soldiers, it was just a mental command, but since Henry Clark had also brought Jin soldiers, he had to shout the order aloud.

Nearly a hundred feathered arrows shot off their bowstrings with a twang, whistling through the air. After the first volley came the second, and then several more in succession.

When the first wave of arrows emerged from the grass, Arthur Hayes was stunned, then fear gripped her heart. She hurriedly urged her horse to dodge.

In this era, there were no stirrups. Even for nomads raised on horseback, when the reins were suddenly yanked to change the horse’s direction, the horse would turn its body, and with nowhere to brace themselves, the riders would inevitably fall. Of the The Hayes Family at the front, four out of twenty riders were shot and fell from their horses, thirteen more were thrown off, leaving only six still galloping forward—but they soon had to stop as well.

Not only the The Hayes Family, but the other group of nomads behind them, advancing at about ten meters per second, suffered the same fate. The difference was that there were more of them, so more were shot down.

In an instant, people and horses were tumbling everywhere, with cries of pain and the shrill neighs of wounded horses, making the grassland suddenly chaotic.

Most of the nomads were shouting “It’s an ambush!” while others were asking how many enemy troops there were. The scene was utter chaos.

Amid the confusion, the sound of synchronized marching arose. The footsteps were so uniform that all the nomads fell silent, each turning to look in the direction of the sound. It seemed they could even feel the grass being flattened as a powerful threat approached.

A sudden voice rang out, shouting, “Han army—charge!!!”

Chapter 10 Arthur Hayes

Han army? The Han Dynasty had already fallen in 220 AD, so where would a Han army come from? If there was a Han army, it would be the Han state established by the Xiongnu leader Liu Yuan. The shout left the The Hayes Family first bewildered, then terrified, and even the Tiefu Xiongnu were stunned.

The The Hayes Family were terrified because their enemies were precisely the Xiongnu forces.

It was spring, the season when all things revive, and plants were growing wildly, forming dense green canopies.

The neat and thunderous sound of marching echoed, but unfortunately, the surrounding weeds were so thick that visibility was almost zero. Yet, because of this, not only was there movement ahead, but the grass to the left and right was also being trampled down. As the chaotic The Hayes Family and Tiefu Xiongnu realized this, they heard movement behind them as well, instinctively gathering together, with the horses on the outside and people inside, hoping to protect themselves.

The grass was continuously being flattened. Arthur Hayes was surrounded by her surviving subordinates. The already complex environment made it hard to see anything, and now, shielded by human bodies, she could see even less. All she could do was keep shouting, “I am the real sister of the ruler of Dai, Tuoba Shiyijian!” as if such an identity could serve as a talisman.

Of course, Henry Clark heard her, but he didn’t feel anything special.

Since there were no new orders, the system’s phalanx of spearmen continued their advance without pause, holding their four-meter-long spears at a slant, moving forward in silence.

Through a gap in the human wall, Arthur Hayes stared intently in the direction of the sound, hearing the footsteps draw ever closer. Unsure if she was seeing things, she spotted several glints of light. When she finally saw clearly, she realized they were spear tips, and instinctively crouched down.

The Xianbei protecting Arthur Hayes kept shouting and yelling. As the spears emerged from the grass, the outer horses were immediately stabbed, neighing in agony. Some broke free from their reins and bolted, while others reared up on the spot, their front hooves flailing in the air.

The fleeing horses charged toward the flanking spearmen. At this moment, the system soldiers’ rigidity was fully revealed—they made no attempt to dodge, continuing to march forward as ordered. Most of the charging horses crashed into the spears and fell instantly, but several spearmen were also knocked over along with their weapons.
