Late at night, the darkness hung like a curtain, yet the YinXun Building in the high-tech park was still brightly lit. As a rising star in the industry, this company was always known for its fierce, relentless work ethic, and its notorious overtime culture sent chills down people’s spines. The tech department, in particular, was the epitome of this, and on this day, as usual, the tech office was ablaze with lights deep into the night. But the engineers battling at their desks felt very different from how they had in the past.
Irritation, anger, gritted teeth... all sorts of negative emotions filled the air. Normally, working late at night would make anyone irritable, but the explosive atmosphere in the tech department tonight was all because of one person.
“Feed, feed, keep feeding! Three against one and you still get counter-killed—do you even know how to play? Do you?!”
With a sudden outburst of shouting, more than five engineers in the office were startled, mistyped data as they pounded their keyboards, and a blood-red warning flashed across their screens, triggering a chorus of groans.
Amid the groans, that out-of-place roar stood out even more. A young man, about twenty-seven or twenty-eight, with greasy hair and lifeless eyes, was sitting at his desk, enthusiastically playing Dota.
In a high-tech company like YinXun, a nine-to-five schedule was pure fantasy. As long as you finished your tasks, the rest of your time was yours to use as you pleased. But almost no one in the tech department ever finished early; instead, all-nighters were the norm. On the rare occasion someone could leave early, they’d just go home to sleep. Someone like this new employee, gaming from three in the afternoon straight through to late at night, was truly one of a kind.
“Kill me, kill me! Hurry up and kill me once! I want to die once!”
“Feed, feed, keep feeding! Stop playing, just go home!”
Finally, the tech director Philip Brown couldn’t take it anymore. He stood up tall and slammed his desk in anger.
“Scott Smith! Are you done yet? If you’re going to play games, just play quietly—what’s with all the yelling? Don’t you know you’re disturbing your coworkers?”
As soon as Philip Brown spoke, the player who’d been so focused on shouting finally, though reluctantly, took off his headphones and stood up to explain, “Shouting is a common tactic in Dota…”
“I don’t need your explanation! No loud noise in the office!”
Scott Smith slumped his shoulders in disappointment. “Got it.” Then he sat back down and quietly started watching a video.
The others finally breathed a sigh of relief at his silence. But after a while, a coworker sitting near Scott Smith caught a glimpse of his screen out of the corner of his eye, immediately spat out a mouthful of water, and then asked in horror,
“You’re actually watching porn!?”
Scott Smith nodded matter-of-factly. “It’s normal entertainment for single people. Don’t you watch it too?”
The coworker wanted to say, of course not, but then thought that would be a lie and unfair to the girls on his hard drive, so he just stayed silent and ended the conversation.
This time, Scott Smith really was much quieter, watching his video alone without a word. But his desk was in a spot with a clear view, and a dozen or so people around him could see the pale, naked flesh on his screen at a glance. Even though Scott Smith was wearing headphones, everyone still felt as if they could hear the women’s moans.
Most of the tech guys working late at night were single and especially sensitive to this kind of stimulation. Their focus quickly scattered, and they couldn’t concentrate on their work anymore, their eyes drifting again and again to Scott Smith’s screen, captivated by the actress’s alluring figure.
“What are you all doing!?”
As the tech director, Philip Brown quickly noticed something was off with his team. Their work was all networked, and everyone’s progress was clearly displayed in the system. With one glance, Philip Brown could see that more than twenty people hadn’t made any progress for ages!
Looking up, he saw a group of people staring intently at Scott Smith’s screen—some with lewd grins, some blushing, others squirming in their seats as if releasing something…
Philip Brown shouted, then strode over to Scott Smith’s desk. One look at his screen and Philip Brown’s vision went black, his chest felt like it had been hammered, and he staggered back several steps.
“You—you bastard, how dare you watch porn in the office!”
Scott Smith chuckled. “YinXun’s network is pretty good, downloads are super fast, even pulling videos from other galaxies is instant…”
“Who asked you about that?!”
“The screen’s great too, the 3D effect is awesome, just the headphones are a bit lacking…”
Philip Brown was so choked with anger his face turned red. Without another word, he yanked out Scott Smith’s computer power cord, snorted coldly, and stormed out of the office, heading straight for the CEO’s office to report him.
Scott Smith shrugged, completely ignoring Philip Brown. He quietly plugged the power cord back in, booted up, opened the video, and continued watching with relish.
The coworkers around him were all amazed by his nerve, secretly wondering whether this guy would get fired tomorrow or the day after.
…
“Director Wen, that Scott Smith is completely out of line!”
