Chapter 7

But she quickly frowned and spoke, “Alright then. If something really happened to you, there are some things I wouldn’t know whether to say or not. But since you’re fine, I won’t hide it from you anymore.”

  Brian Carter frowned again.

And Samantha Cooper, with a hint of condescension in her gaze, pressed her lips into a slight smile and said, “I came to tell you that I might be getting engaged to someone else. Don’t bother me anymore in the future, or it’ll be embarrassing for both of us.”

Brian Carter was stunned again. Although from the vague words he’d heard before waking up, and from Samantha Cooper’s behavior after coming in, he had more or less guessed something, at most he thought it might be a breakup, but he never expected her to say she might be getting engaged?

He and Samantha Cooper had started dating in their sophomore year, which was just this past Spring Festival, so it had only been a little over half a year. Back then, Brian Carter had fallen for Samantha Cooper at first sight at a class reunion, and then began to pursue her.

Although his circumstances were quite ordinary, the first time he saw Samantha Cooper he really felt a spark, and somehow, with a burst of courage from who knows where, he chatted with her a bit more at the party and even got her contact information. Later, with his meticulous care and relentless persistence, he finally got Samantha Cooper to agree to be his girlfriend.

During that time, he was undoubtedly very happy, and treated Samantha Cooper incredibly well, putting his whole heart into her. Even when he later realized that Samantha Cooper was a bit materialistic, often mocking him for being incompetent, poor, and not having a good father or anything, Brian Carter never minded and still treated her extremely well.

Some friends had told Brian Carter that Samantha Cooper wasn’t really suitable for him, but what can you say, people in love can be really blind sometimes. Even when he calmed down, he could sense something was off, but he just couldn’t stop himself from thinking about her.

It wasn’t until graduation was approaching and everyone was busy job hunting that his contact with Samantha Cooper gradually decreased—not because he was neglecting her, but because every time he asked her out, she always had some excuse to turn him down.

So, when it came to breaking up, Brian Carter had already been mentally preparing himself.

But he still didn’t expect that she might actually be getting engaged?

“I don’t want to upset you at a time like this, but if I don’t make things clear, you’ll just keep bothering me every day. There’s no way we can keep going,” Samantha Cooper spoke again, raising her slender, fair neck and glancing at David Carter, then said with a hint of mockery, “I really don’t want to tell people that my boyfriend is just a delivery guy.”

That was the truth. In the past, Brian Carter was, to put it bluntly, like a pet in front of her—he’d do whatever she asked, and when she was in the mood, she could tease him and have him keep her company, and when she wasn’t, she’d just ignore him, knowing he’d come back whenever she beckoned.

If she still needed someone so obedient to wait on her and help her swipe cards and withdraw money, it wouldn’t be bad. But now, she didn’t need him to serve her anymore.

Just a few days ago, her family had introduced her to a blind date. Although the guy wasn’t very handsome, he had some background and was infatuated with her. The only downside was that he was jealous. She had already been considering when to break things off with Brian Carter, and then Brian Carter got into a car accident—hit by a car while delivering packages.

She really didn’t want others to know that her boyfriend was just a delivery guy. That was pure humiliation for her. In front of her friends, it was an embarrassment she couldn’t even bring herself to mention.

“A delivery guy, ... fine, let’s break up then.” As those words fell, Brian Carter suddenly smiled.

But it wasn’t a bitter smile.

It was that Brian Carter suddenly realized that when something you’ve already anticipated actually happens, you don’t feel that heart-wrenching pain, and it doesn’t seem all that terrible.

Did that mean his infatuation with Samantha Cooper, all those feelings after love at first sight, were fake? He asked himself honestly, and it was clear they weren’t.

Brian Carter thought for a moment and realized it was because of the influence of Slaughter’s memories.

  Who was Slaughter?!

Although he hadn’t seen much of Slaughter’s memories, Slaughter’s life was simply too extraordinary—becoming a legendary killer early on, flying through the skies, destroying planets with a flip of his hand. Those scenes, so shockingly intense, felt as vivid and real as if Brian Carter had just experienced them himself when he watched them.

This feeling had undoubtedly had a big impact on him.

Maybe before having these memories, if Samantha Cooper had said these things, he really wouldn’t have been able to take it. Even if he’d seen it coming, he would have been utterly miserable, to the point of being inconsolable.

But after experiencing the memories of such a being, even though he’d only seen a few fragments, his state of mind had clearly improved dramatically.

A life of endless battles, the divine power to shatter the stars, those fiery and passionate years almost ignited Brian Carter’s blood. Compared to that, he realized that even if he really did lose in love, it honestly wasn’t a big deal.

On one side was just a breakup, on the other was the destruction of stars and rivers of blood, all of it feeling as if he’d just done it himself—the contrast was just too overwhelming.
