Chapter 8

In Slaughter's memories, there were countless near-death experiences, and every time he survived by sheer force of will. When Brian Carter looked back, he felt as if he himself had almost died and barely made it through. These memories were so vivid and realistic, and not just once or twice—it was as if he had walked the line between life and death dozens of times. Compared to that kind of thrill, a mere heartbreak really didn’t seem like a big deal.

“Hm? You agreed?” Brian Carter’s calm smile left Samantha Cooper momentarily stunned. She looked at him suspiciously—his reaction was clearly not what she expected. He agreed so easily, without any argument or fuss, and even his expression was so composed?

Did this guy get hit on the head and turn stupid, or did he suddenly have an epiphany and realize he’s not good enough for her, so he’s backing off on his own?

The fact that he was so willing to step back was a good thing for her; that was exactly why she came. But still, Brian Carter making it so easy for her to achieve her goal left Samantha Cooper feeling a bit frustrated and unhappy.

In the past, Brian Carter always acted as if his life had no meaning without her, always extremely anxious and obedient around her. If she had ever said she was going to get engaged to someone else, he probably would have gone crazy. But now, he was so calm, so indifferent—there was none of the reaction she had expected, and that really annoyed Samantha Cooper.

It was as if, overnight, her goddess status in Brian Carter’s eyes had suddenly vanished, as if she no longer mattered to him at all.

  That was a blow.

You always thought you were extremely important to someone, the most important person in their life, that they couldn’t live without you. That’s a sign of your own charm. But suddenly, reality is the complete opposite—they don’t seem to care about you at all. Doesn’t that mean you never had any charm to begin with, and you were just being self-indulgent?

“Why wouldn’t I agree?” Brian Carter looked up, smiling faintly. Although his mindset had changed under the influence of Slaughter’s memories and he was no longer the naive young man he once was, and the breakup didn’t cause him any heart-wrenching pain, it still hurt a bit. It was uncomfortable.

Samantha Cooper glared at him again, a flash of embarrassment and anger crossing her face, but she quickly suppressed it and replaced it with a bright smile. “It’s good that you understand. I won’t stay any longer, then.”

With that, she turned and walked away. After a few steps, she suddenly stopped, turned back, and smiled, “Actually, I’m still a little reluctant to let you go. When I get engaged in a while, if you have time, you can come to my ceremony. Even if we can’t be a couple, we can still be friends.”

Does this guy really not care about her anymore? She didn’t believe it. He must be holding it in, and maybe as soon as she left, he’d break down and cry. But Samantha Cooper didn’t want to just guess whether she still had any influence over him—she wanted to see it with her own eyes.

She didn’t believe that if she said this, he could remain unmoved.

Unfortunately, Samantha Cooper was disappointed. Under her gaze, Brian Carter paused slightly, then nodded calmly. “If I have time, I’ll consider it.”

Chapter 005: You’re Doing This on Purpose, Aren’t You

  “Mr. Carter, what is it?”

After Samantha Cooper left, Brian Carter’s expression finally turned a bit gloomy.

Although his changed mindset had minimized the pain of the breakup, Brian Carter still felt uncomfortable. Not to mention, the other party had even deliberately disgusted him by inviting him to her engagement ceremony at the end?

  Damn it!

Even with his new outlook, Brian Carter still wanted to curse. He even suddenly felt a surge of murderous intent—yes, murderous intent. Experiencing Slaughter’s memories firsthand, seeing how he would kill others at the slightest displeasure, and those things felt as if he himself had done them. He was definitely affected.

But Brian Carter forced himself to calm down. After a moment of silence, he pressed the call button by his bed. Soon, a figure in a white nurse’s uniform pushed open the door and smiled sweetly at Brian Carter.

“Go get someone to help me take this thing out.” Brian Carter frowned, clearly annoyed, and pointed at the tube below.

He was annoyed. No matter the reason, having a tube inserted down there was frustrating for any man. He couldn’t take it out himself, so he could only ask for help.

In this state, even if he wanted to pee, he couldn’t.

“Pfft…” Hearing this and glancing at where Brian Carter was pointing, the young nurse’s eyes flashed with amusement. She could understand Brian Carter’s frustration. “According to regulations, patients who have been in a coma for more than 12 hours need to use a catheter until they wake up. But since you’re awake now and have been checked and are fine, it can be removed.”

With a sweet smile, the nurse spoke as she walked to Brian Carter’s side, pulling a thin plastic glove from her pocket, bending over, and putting it on.

“What are you doing?” Brian Carter was suddenly stunned, staring at the nurse in surprise. He had asked her to get someone to help him take it out.

Why did it look like she was going to do it herself? Was this a joke? He was a grown man, and she was a female nurse.

“What’s there to be embarrassed about? I was the one who put it in, after all. I’m your special nurse.” Seeing Brian Carter’s stunned look, the nurse blushed, but forced herself to act experienced and calm.
