Chapter 9

"Henry Carter young master? Hehe... Samuel Bennett young master, not everyone is worthy of being called 'young master,' not everyone is like you..." One of the two girls at the table, other than Emily Bolton and Grace Walker, spoke up.

She was wearing a blue qipao, a string of pearl necklaces, and a Chopin watch on her wrist. Her entire outfit screamed to everyone that she was wealthy.

The girl looked a bit smug as she raised her hand adorned with a jade ring and pointed at Henry Carter: "This Henry Carter young master, you really know how to live frugally! You truly embody the traditional virtue of hard work and thrift. The total cost of your clothes probably doesn't even add up to a thousand yuan, right? And you've worn them for years, haven't you? They're almost faded white from washing! The suit on Samuel Bennett young master is probably enough to buy you clothes for a hundred years!"

"Hahahaha..." After she finished, everyone at the table laughed, including Emily Bolton.

Chapter 4: Unmoved

Grace Walker's face instantly turned ugly!!!

She had brought Henry Carter to the birthday party, not to have her boyfriend ridiculed.

She immediately wanted to stand up and leave with Henry Carter, but unexpectedly, Henry Carter grabbed her hand, "No rush!" Henry Carter whispered.

"Henry Carter young master! If you can't find an internship in a couple of years, you can come work at my family's lumber yard. I guarantee you'll make at least five thousand yuan a month!"

Brian Foster also spoke up. When he realized Samuel Bennett was interested in Grace Walker, he knew he had no chance. Since that was the case, why not help Samuel Bennett put down Henry Carter? That way, he could curry favor with Samuel Bennett.

"Hahaha..." Another round of laughter erupted.

"Brian Foster, that's not right, only five thousand a month? Isn't that a bit low? Probably not even enough for rent and food, how could he save any money?" someone teased amid the laughter.

"Then how much do you think is appropriate?" Brian Foster asked, playing along.

"Well, since we know each other, you should add another hundred. Hmm, a monthly salary of five thousand one, how about that?" the person replied with a straight face.

"Haha..." More laughter, some people were even laughing so hard they had tears in their eyes.

But Henry Carter still didn't argue, remaining quiet and calm.

Grace Walker's face grew even uglier. She turned to Emily Bolton: "I came to celebrate your birthday, and this is how you let your friends humiliate my boyfriend?"

"Grace, I'm doing this for your own good. He's just a poor guy, there's no future for you two, no matter how much you like him. Can he give you a future? Will your parents agree to you being with him?" Emily Bolton said in a lecturing tone, "Half of this birthday party is basically for you. Do you know who Samuel Bennett young master is? He's the only son of the chairman of Tianqing Group! Tianqing Group is a listed company, way stronger than your family’s business. If you get together with Samuel Bennett young master, you'll have money and power in the future. Then, you'll thank me!"

"Emily Bolton, after today, let's not contact each other anymore!" Grace Walker said, enunciating each word.

Different paths cannot be walked together. Time can change a person. She thought Emily Bolton was still the best friend she knew over a decade ago, but reality told her otherwise.

"Ungrateful!" Emily Bolton snorted, though she kept another thought to herself—if Samuel Bennett young master isn't interested in you, fine, but if he is, do you think you can escape?

"Henry Carter young master, are the pastries tasty?" Samuel Bennett spoke again, his face full of disdain. "You seem to be enjoying them. Eat more! Not everyone can afford the pastries and dishes from Wanchian Restaurant. I doubt you’ll get to come here many times."

"Yeah, this table of food, not counting the alcohol, costs at least ten or twenty thousand. With the drinks, it’s over a hundred thousand..." Emily Bolton said with a smile. "But today, I’m paying. Everyone, eat and drink as much as you like, it’s all on me!"

As she spoke, Emily Bolton glanced at Henry Carter: "When we’re done, if you haven’t had enough, Henry Carter young master, you can pack some to take home..."

"Enough!!!" Grace Walker's voice suddenly rose: "Is having money really that great?"

With Grace Walker's outburst, the atmosphere became a bit awkward.

But soon, "Maybe having money isn’t everything, but some people don’t even have money!" The Stanford graduate at the table, Andrew Clark, spoke up: "As the saying goes, money isn’t everything, but without money, you can do nothing. Take Stanford University, for example, a world-renowned university. Without money, how could you study abroad? And if you don’t study abroad, how would you know the huge gap between China and the rest of the world?"

"If it’s so great abroad, why did you come back?" Henry Carter smiled, glancing at Andrew Clark, finally speaking up.

Andrew Clark glared angrily at Henry Carter: "Country bumpkin, do you even know what Stanford is? Remember, you’re a student at Chengfeng University, hahahaha..."

Grace Walker was so angry she was about to explode again.

"Alright, let’s all have a drink together!" Samuel Bennett clapped his hands: "Happy birthday to Emily, may you be twenty forever!"

Everyone stood up.

But Henry Carter and Grace Walker remained seated.

Grace Walker was truly angry now. If Henry Carter hadn’t insisted on staying, she would have already left. Her face was icy cold.
