Chapter 9

Under those circumstances, aside from madmen and a few people with extreme ideas, who would be willing to endure such pain just to exercise their bodies?

This set of radio calisthenics is truly miraculous, but the vast majority of people would rather go to the hospital for painless treatment than endure the hardship of daily training. The probability of a one-in-a-million ascetic is probably still an overestimate.

This is the difference caused by different environments. For those who have never experienced an era of material abundance, it is very difficult to understand the reasoning behind it.

“Are you ready?” Number One urged, “The second set of radio calisthenics is much harder than the first. We only have six hours, so we must make the most of it.”

  “Alright, I’m ready.”

“Beginner Human Development Radio Calisthenics, Set One, Section Two, official instruction begins: one, two, three, four…”

Chapter Six: Change

One bucket, two buckets, three buckets… huh, why is the water full?

Sean Carter stared in slight daze at the now full water vat. If he remembered correctly, it should take at least seven and a half buckets of water from the river to fill this vat.

Plus, since he was only nine years old, he could only carry half a bucket at a time. That meant, to fill the vat completely, he would have to make fifteen trips back and forth from the river.

But today was different. Each time, he carried a full bucket of water, walking briskly, and didn’t even rest once along the way.

He had completed four times his usual workload in only half the usual time.

Clenching his fist tightly, then slowly releasing it, Sean Carter could clearly feel the strength contained within. Although this strength wasn’t exactly great, compared to before, it was already a significant improvement.

Today marked the fortieth day since he began practicing the first set, second section of the radio calisthenics.

During these forty days, he worked on the farm at a frantic pace every day, refusing to stop until he was utterly exhausted. Several times, he was so numb he barely had the strength to walk back home.

Old Miller saw this and felt pain in his heart. But Sean Carter had always been very opinionated since childhood; once he set his mind on something, no matter what others said, he would never change.

Because of this stubbornness, father and son often clashed, but in most cases, it was Old Miller who gave in and compromised.

For example, Old Miller had smoked hemp for twenty years, but at Sean Carter’s insistence on not inhaling secondhand smoke, he was forced to quit.

But ever since quitting, Old Miller’s asthma symptoms had gradually lessened, to the point where they were now almost negligible.

So when Old Miller saw his son working so hard in the fields, he felt both gratified and worried.

No one knows a son better than his father. From his son’s usual behavior, he could tell that Sean Carter actually disliked farm work. But for Old Miller, who had farmed his whole life, he simply couldn’t think of any other way to support the family.

Now, his son’s sudden change brought him heartfelt happiness. However, the change was so drastic—it was as if he’d gone from one extreme to the other—which left him quite puzzled.

But Old Miller noticed that every time Sean Carter came home at noon, exhausted, and rested for over an hour, he would return to work in the afternoon full of energy. No matter how tired he was the night before, after a night’s sleep, he would wake up the next day brimming with vitality, as if he’d slept for three days and nights straight.

For a farmer who had spent most of his life in the yellow earth, his only thought was that his son’s health had improved, he was developing, and the family now had another good helper.

As for whether this development was a bit excessive, for an honest father, the more capable his children, the better.

Thus, Sean Carter continued: working in the fields every morning and afternoon, practicing the five movements of the first section at noon and in the evening, and then gradually trying out the new movements of the second section.

The second section also had five movements, but they were much more difficult than those in the first. Without the foundation of the first section, Sean Carter would not have been able to complete any of them.

Of course, hard work pays off. After this ascetic-like training every day, his body—whether in flexibility, strength, or speed—had all improved significantly.

Likewise, among the five movements of the second section, he could already perform four of them excellently.

As his strength and stamina increased, his body became less and less prone to fatigue. As a result, his speed and output in farm work also gradually improved.

Although not changing day by day, after twenty days of hard training, he was already twice as fast as on the first day.
