Chapter 4

David Carter has been through some extremely bizarre things these past few days. Casually trying to prop up a falling cabinet, his arm was crushed and amputated. Strangely, his amputated left arm completely recovered, and now there was actually someone talking inside this left arm. David Carter's head felt like it had grown several sizes. Still, by instinct, he raised his left arm, stretched it out to try to put some distance between them, but since the arm was attached to his body, all he could do was extend it and lean his head toward his right arm. In his right hand, he gripped a fruit knife tightly, his palm slick with sweat. His eyes darted between his arm and the surroundings, checking for any other supernatural occurrences.

"Look at you, scared out of your wits like a bear. Ghosts? What ghosts? Don’t compare those low-level, fragile soul forms to the great and awesome me. The great and awesome me is... I am... who was I again..." The voice from within his arm echoed in David Carter's mind once more, though it became a bit muddled toward the end.

David Carter was now shirtless. Years of work had left his body a bit flabby, the flesh somewhat soft. But at this moment, he looked incredibly solid and strong—even more so than when he played basketball back in school. Yet right now, David Carter's upper body was drenched in sweat. This was just too terrifying. Did he have some kind of smart computer installed in his arm? Had he really been taken as a test subject? In his mind, David Carter leaned toward this explanation, since he had always been an atheist.

"The great and awesome me is... who was I again..." At this moment, the voice seemed suddenly confused, then shouted again in David Carter's mind: "Someone as great and awesome as me—you must know who I am, right?"

Are you kidding me? You’re asking me? How would I know who the hell you are? Suddenly, David Carter remembered what he had just been thinking, and it seemed this guy actually knew. David Carter was startled all over again.

"You... how do you know what I’m thinking?" David Carter had a thousand guesses in his mind, and was also so scared he wanted to run. But this was his own home—where could he go? So he could only summon his courage and ask.

"That’s simple. After the great and awesome me woke up, I wanted to know where I was, so I checked out the surroundings a bit and established some contact with you. As for knowing what you’re thinking, it’s because you’re communicating with me right now, directly through your mind. It’s like you’re opening your thoughts to me, that’s why I know. Don’t worry, it’s just that you don’t know how to control it yet. Once you learn to use it, I won’t be able to read your mind anymore." The voice answered David Carter's question quickly and in great detail. Even someone as clueless as David Carter could understand what was going on.

"Then... what are you? How are you in my arm, and how did my left arm regenerate after being amputated?" This explanation eased much of David Carter's fear, or maybe he was just starting to get used to it, though he still found it hard to comprehend everything in front of him.

"Damn it, I’d like to know why too... Hmph, the great and awesome me woke up and found myself in your arm, and your arm seems a bit special. The great and awesome me is researching it right now, and I’ll have results soon. By the way, you still haven’t answered—someone as great and awesome as me, who am I? Don’t you know?" The voice in his arm was clearly arrogant and supremely confident. He obviously didn’t know why he was trapped in David Carter's arm, but insisted on saving face by claiming to be researching it.

"You’re great, you’re awesome, you’re powerful, okay? Let’s discuss that later. For now, tell me how you got into my body, and where exactly are you in my arm?" David Carter immediately decided to set aside the question of identity for now and ask about the things he cared about most. Judging by the voice, it seemed he was trapped as well.

"You’ll have to ask yourself that. When I woke up, I was already in your arm. If I could get out, I would’ve left already. You think I want to stay here?" But this answer was rather disappointing.

David Carter immediately tried to recall everything. It all started the day he reached out to steady that shelf. The shelf was filled with stones—the owner who was moving seemed to be a stone collector. He only remembered that when he supported the shelf, nothing seemed wrong at first, but then something seemed to fall from the shelf and hit his left arm. Could that be the reason?

The reason people feel fear is, for the most part, because of the unknown and their own inner anxieties. It’s like during the Qing Dynasty, when the country was closed off for so long, a foreigner from some remote place would be demonized just for looking different. Yet, there might be strange beasts nearby, even man-eaters, and people wouldn’t be afraid of them. After chatting for a bit, David Carter’s terror lessened considerably. Having run all the way here in a panic and with his nerves stretched to the limit, he was also extremely exhausted.
