“Remember, don’t touch that Emily Thompson, she’s the one the young master wants. You can scare her a little, and then…” After winning his money and getting ready to head back, as he walked to the entrance of an alley on Shuguang Third Street, he suddenly heard someone talking. At first, David Carter didn’t pay much attention, but when he heard the name Emily Thompson, his steps came to an abrupt halt.
Chapter 10: The Hero Saves the Beauty—and Steals the Show
Mrs. Thompson’s daughter is called Emily Thompson, and David Carter also knows that Emily has recently been tutoring a few high school students, apparently right around here. Since this area is full of temporary rentals, the people are bound to be a bit mixed, so in the past, Mrs. Thompson would pick up Emily every day.
Suddenly hearing someone mention Emily in such a dim alley, David Carter immediately felt something was off, and it was clear from the tone that it wasn’t anything good. Not sure if it was the Emily he knew, David Carter followed the sound, deciding to check it out first.
With his body’s strength, speed, and reflexes all enhanced, he could now do many things he couldn’t before. For example, he could move quickly and land lightly without making a sound, and by controlling his steps, he could approach silently. He glanced inside. At the entrance, there was a Mercedes parked, and in the alley, a middle-aged man who looked like a butler was giving instructions to a few thugs. There were three thugs in total. The man took out some alcohol, had them drink a bit and pour some on themselves, then pointed to a spot.
“Boss, everything’s set up.” Once everything was arranged, the man walked over to the Mercedes, bowed respectfully, and spoke.
The Mercedes’ window was only cracked open, but even from ten meters away, with the dim streetlights, David Carter could see clearly and hear everything.
“Do you think that woman’s plan will work? This kind of plot is just disgusting, so cliché, so tacky.” The person in the car was clearly skeptical.
The butler-like man bowed and smiled. “Boss, the woman’s right. Girls at this age love to dream. The romance novels and dramas they watch are way more brainless than this. But they love it. Still, boss, is it really necessary for you to get hurt for this woman? With your status, why not just beat them all up and be done with it?”
“No, that wouldn’t have much effect. Since we’re already doing something this brainless, we might as well go all the way. Watch the timing—when it’s about right, have the driver drive by.” The person inside waved his hand as he finished.
David Carter saw the whole scene from a distance and understood most of it. Damn, so it’s a hero-saving-the-beauty act. This plot is really old, but if used well, it’s not bad. Back in school, his roommate had used this trick.
If he hadn’t heard the name Emily Thompson just now, David Carter would have walked away, bored—he wouldn’t even have wanted to watch. But now, he had to make sure if it was Emily.
Over the years, although he and Mrs. Thompson were just neighbors, their relationship was better than with most relatives. As the saying goes, distant relatives aren’t as good as close neighbors. People like Grace Parker could be excluded, but in David Carter’s heart, Mrs. Thompson was far better than most relatives. Emily was a junior in college this year. Since starting university, she’d been working part-time, tutoring people during the semester, and working during summer and winter breaks. There was no way David Carter could ignore Emily’s situation.
“The thumb ring worn by Dorgon, Nurhaci’s fourteenth son—I can’t believe it ended up in that guy’s hands.” By the light, Old Smith suddenly spoke, noticing the thumb ring on the man’s hand in the car.
“You recognize it?” David Carter was surprised, since Old Smith had named it so specifically.
“Of course I do. Any jade antique—whether it’s jade, calligraphy, bronzes, or ceramics—I know them all. In fact, I was often there watching when their owners created them. Unfortunately, now that the great and mighty me is affected by your damn left arm, I can’t keep track of everything in the world anymore. But within a certain range around you, or anywhere you can see, I can still easily observe and understand.”
In the end, he was still trapped, but before being confined to David Carter’s left arm, he could keep track of the whole world at any time. Thinking about it was terrifying.
“Huh, if that’s the case, then if I open an antique shop or get into the antiques business, I’d be guaranteed to make a profit.” David Carter’s eyes lit up. After quitting his job, he’d been thinking about what to do, especially now that his immediate troubles had eased.
It wasn’t the right time to discuss this, but the idea had already taken root in David Carter’s mind. If Old Smith was really as powerful as he claimed, he could definitely open an antique shop.
As he was thinking, David Carter quickly caught up with the three thugs who had just left. They’d poured alcohol on themselves earlier, and now that David Carter’s sense of smell was several times stronger, it was easy to track them. After walking about a hundred meters, he saw the thugs smoking at a street corner.
“Damn, these rich people still like to play this game. If it works, maybe I’ll try it myself someday and play the hero.”
