Chapter 10

David Carter lives on Shuguang Sixth Street. At this moment, the car had already reached Shuguang Third Street, where some houses on both sides of the street were being demolished. However, it wasn’t large-scale demolition; it seemed that a few families had joined together, wanting to build some two- or three-story small buildings themselves. Looking at the busy scene outside, a smile appeared on David Carter’s face as well. The people taking action now were all those who dared to think and act, with sharp instincts. Because even renting out now could earn quite a bit, and most importantly, this area would definitely be demolished in the future—by then, it would be too late to try to do anything last minute.

Suddenly, David Carter saw the workers outside, and also noticed the sand and bricks and such on the ground.

“Driver, just stop here.” David Carter paid the fare and got out of the taxi. The roadside was covered with sand, stones, and quite a few broken bricks. It was already lunchtime, and the sun was scorching. Except for the occasional passing vehicle, there weren’t many people around.

David Carter walked to a corner, where sand was being sifted, and quite a few stones had been separated out. There were also plenty of bricks and stones nearby. David Carter looked around, picked up a half-meter-long wooden plank, and with a slight effort from both hands, the plank snapped in two, as easily as an ordinary person breaking a disposable chopstick. But when David Carter glanced at where he was gripping the wood, he saw that the spot held by his left hand already had a handprint, and the area gripped by his left hand had become noticeably thinner, as if it had shrunk.

David Carter tossed aside the plank and picked up a brick. He had learned how to break an ordinary brick with his bare hands during training before. Although he wasn’t as good as a special forces soldier, at the time, with his physical strength and some clever techniques, it was still quite an impressive feat. Usually, after breaking a brick, his hand would hurt for a couple of days, but now, holding it in his hand, with just a little force, he didn’t even need to chop—it simply snapped in two. And the side gripped by his left hand even had a handprint pressed into it, as if an ordinary person had pressed their fingers into loose soil, with bits of debris constantly falling off.

The strength in his left arm was indeed much greater than his right, and he still couldn’t control the force very well—he needed to be careful about this. David Carter thought to himself and experimented two more times. It seemed what that soul said was true—he now possessed the strength of a thousand pounds, and his body had changed, making him three or four times stronger than a normal person. Unfortunately, while he had great strength, it wasn’t of much use. He urgently needed money, but this strength couldn’t be exchanged for cash, and he didn’t want to do anything illegal. He still had to find a way to make money and raise the funds as soon as possible.

“Creak… creak…” At this moment, David Carter picked up a few pebbles from the ground and squeezed them hard in his hand, the sound of the stones rubbing together was quite grating. In his left hand, a smaller stone already had its edges cracked.

“Hey… what are you doing…” Just then, an old man in his sixties shouted toward David Carter from not far away. Clearly, he was there to watch over the construction site. After all, there were still plenty of sand, stones, and tools around. If David Carter hadn’t been standing among a mess of stones and bricks, the old man probably would have come over sooner. But seeing David Carter fiddling around for a while, he couldn’t help but come over to take a look.

“Heh heh…” David Carter smiled and waved his hand. “It’s nothing, just passing by and picking up a couple of stones to play with.”

As David Carter spoke, he turned and walked toward Shuguang Sixth Street, still pondering the problem in his mind. He couldn’t just go do manual labor, could he? With his current strength, if he were unloading train cars or cargo at the port, he could outperform five or even seven or eight people by himself. His body was now full of power, which made David Carter think of this. But he couldn’t let others find out, and it wasn’t really feasible. What other way could he quickly raise the money he needed…

“What’s so fun here? If you want to pick up stones, go to the beach…” the old man muttered as he walked over, glancing around and seeing nothing unusual. Suddenly, he noticed the spot where David Carter had been standing. The old man rubbed his eyes. The place was already messy, so a few more broken bricks and pieces of wood didn’t matter, but he saw that one of the bricks actually had a handprint on it.

The old man bent down to pick it up and tried putting his fingers in—it really seemed to have been made by a human hand. He knocked on it hard, grimaced in pain, and wondered how that young man had done it. Could it be a defective brick from the kiln, and the young man was just examining it?

Walking all the way back to Shuguang Sixth Street, in today’s law-abiding society, if you don’t break the law, it’s not easy to make money—even if you suddenly gained the strength of a thousand pounds, or even martial arts skills like a hero from a novel. Especially without connections, and needing to raise money in a short time—it was even harder.

“Ding dong… clatter… clatter…” Suddenly, a special tune played, followed by the sound of a large number of coins falling into a metal box, and then a burst of cheerful music.

“I won… I won! Haha, I knew it, it was worth waiting here for over two hours…” Cheers could be heard from inside.
