David Young squeezed it with his hand, tossed it back to him, and said with a smile, “We’re brothers, no need to be so polite. Take it back.”
Inside was the sixty thousand silver dollars that Ethan Cooper had just withdrawn from the bank.
Handing the money over again, Ethan Cooper said seriously, “Brother, to be honest, the place I’m going this time is a bit strange. Even I can’t say for sure if I’ll make it back. You’d better keep this money, just in case…”
David Young’s expression changed slightly. He said, “Where are you going, brother? How about I go with you?”
“Haha.” Ethan Cooper chuckled, “It’s not like I’m going to a fight. Why would you come?”
David Young blushed. Other than being good at fighting, he really didn’t have much else to boast about. “You said it was… so strange, so…”
“Thanks.” Ethan Cooper laughed heartily. “If I ever get into a fight, I’ll definitely call you.”
“Don’t worry, as long as it’s for you, brother, I’ll be there whenever you need me.”
Ethan Cooper nodded, got into the car, and was about to start it when he saw David Young open the window and toss the stack of money onto the back seat. “No matter where you’re going, take this money with you.”
A wave of gratitude welled up in him. Ethan Cooper thought for a moment, then reached into his pocket. When he pulled his hand out, there was a small pouch in it, containing the remaining jewels.
“Sell these for me. Same as always, fifty-fifty split. I’ll get my share when I’m back.”
Chapter Five: The Fake Blind Man
With that, he stepped on the gas, and the car roared away.
The reason he chose to drive himself to Xiao Putuo was because he didn’t know what was inside the safe John Harris had given him.
If it turned out to be contraband and he got caught, that would be a real injustice.
Besides, there was no way to take something like that on a plane, and even bringing it on a train would be risky. If anything unexpected happened, he’d be gambling with his own life.
So driving himself was the safest and most reliable option.
His driving skills were just passable, but he had plenty of energy. The highway was tiring and a bit lonely, but after several days of travel, he finally arrived in Ningbo.
From Ningbo, heading south to Dongqian Lake, he found a random hotel, parked the car, had a meal, and then hired a small boat to take him to Xiao Putuo.
Although it wasn’t tourist season, there were still quite a few visitors on Xiao Putuo. Many high-nosed, blue-eyed foreigners were pointing and chatting, looking quite satisfied.
Ethan Cooper made a routine circuit, went through the cave, visited the temple, and even rode a horse. However, he couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary.
What caught his eye most were the fortune-telling stalls set up behind the park.
Each stall had a sign in front, advertising all sorts of mysterious and mystical services. But most of the stalls clearly stated: blind fortune-teller.
Ethan Cooper smiled slightly. Where could there be so many blind people? Who knew how many of them were real?
Strangely, business seemed pretty good here. At least from what Ethan Cooper saw, there were one or two people in front of every stall.
He strolled along, walking farther and farther, until he found himself deep in the mountains. Looking back, there was no one else around.
Carefully, he took out the dark yellow paper that John Harris had given him. The paper was covered in strange and unusual patterns, as mysterious as John Harris himself.
He lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and used the lighter’s flame to ignite the paper.
“Whoo…”
He didn’t know what material the paper was made of, but as soon as the lighter’s flame touched it, it caught fire instantly. In just a breath, it had burned to the top, startling Ethan Cooper so much that he quickly let go.
It burned extremely fast. In just a moment, the paper had turned to ash, and a gentle mountain breeze scattered it far away.
“Wow, what on earth is this stuff?”
Ethan Cooper muttered to himself. Everything about John Harris was strange and uncanny. It was a pity he hadn’t scanned the paper; otherwise, he could have tried to reproduce and study it later.
For some reason, Ethan Cooper’s gaze followed the ashes swirling in the air.
He seemed to sense a strange ripple passing through the space, a ripple very similar to his own supernatural ability.
After a while, the ashes were gone.
However, Ethan Cooper’s mood gradually sank. No one had come.
He stood up, looked east, looked west, but still saw nothing.
“Trickery and nonsense,” Ethan Cooper cursed under his breath, but he couldn’t relax. If no one came to find him, didn’t that mean he wouldn’t be able to deliver the goods?
If John Harris was unreasonable and insisted on taking his life, what then?
His mouth twitched twice, and he lowered his head.
But then, his movements stopped abruptly, his gaze fixed on the ground. There, on the ground, were two pairs of feet.
