Chapter 5

Henry Brooks said coldly, “The rib has pierced the lung. If sent to the hospital in time, it can be saved. A single lung lobe can still support oxygen supply for the body. Move aside…”

Isaac Bennett was just about to come over and push Henry Brooks away when Henry Brooks shot him a sharp look. Henry Brooks’s eyes were as cold as a blade, making Isaac Bennett stop in his tracks, not daring to get closer.

Isaac Bennett turned to Brian Foster for help: “Director Foster, he’s acting recklessly! If something happens, I won’t take responsibility.”

“No one needs you to take responsibility. If anything happens, I’ll take full responsibility.” As Henry Brooks spoke, he was already pushing the patient toward the operating room next to the emergency room.

“His case is handled by our criminal police team. You just need to do your job.” At some point, the policewoman who had been standing by the door was now at the entrance. Her large eyes still burned with anger, and her police uniform accentuated her striking presence—a young, beautiful woman in uniform, making anyone’s eyes light up at the sight.

An older policeman nearby hurried forward and said, “Captain, you were just disciplined, and this case is being supervised by the province. This is our only lead; nothing can go wrong. Please go back and rest, I’ll handle things here.”

Judging by the old policeman’s demeanor, he seemed afraid this beautiful policewoman would rush in and take action again.

Although Lily Grant looked stunning in her police uniform, at this moment Henry Brooks only had eyes for the patient. He was thinking about how to save the patient using the ancient medical techniques from three hundred years in the future. Fortunately, he still had memories from his days as a military doctor, though it had been a long time since he’d performed surgery. Seeing Lily Grant blocking the doorway, he said, “He’s your responsibility in the criminal police team, but once he’s in the hospital, he’s my responsibility.”

“You’re responsible?” Lily Grant looked at Henry Brooks. He was clearly a greenhorn fresh out of college. She hadn’t heard all of Henry Brooks’s earlier words, only the part about who was responsible, and assumed they were talking about her. Then Henry Brooks stepped up and claimed responsibility, which only deepened Lily Grant’s misunderstanding and confirmed her judgment. So Lily Grant retorted bluntly, “Why are you responsible? Are you in charge here?”

“Captain, please, I’m begging you, just step aside…” The older policeman, whose name turned out to be Old Carter, pulled Lily Grant to the side. This was no time for arguments. The doctor needed to save the patient first, or it would be hard to write the report later.

Henry Brooks pushed the patient out directly. Isaac Bennett pointed at Henry Brooks’s back, so angry he couldn’t speak. Where did this fool come from? Does he think his eyes are X-rays? Just by feeling the pulse, he claims it’s a concussion and a rib piercing the lung. Who does he think he is?

“Director Foster, you saw everything. This has nothing to do with me. If something really happens…”

Brian Foster was anxious too, but Henry Brooks was the young master—who knew what was going on with him today? He’d already said such things, and with that kind of presence, even Brian Foster felt intimidated and couldn’t stop him.

“Enough, go help out. If something really happens, none of us can escape responsibility.” Helpless, Brian Foster could only follow along.

At this point, the nurses and Isaac Bennett, Howard Sullivan, and the others finally snapped out of it. Such a major surgery couldn’t possibly be done by one person, so they all rushed after them.

Chapter 3 Surgery

Lily Grant stared blankly as the group of doctors and nurses followed Henry Brooks out. She had originally been the captain of the city’s criminal police team—the youngest female captain in the province. Last year, while pursuing a group of teenage robbers, she had severely injured all of them, leaving one permanently disabled.

That teenager was the ringleader, leading a group of youths who took pleasure in robbery. During one of their crimes, one person died and eight were injured. It should have been a major achievement, but the boy’s father was a powerful figure, and in the end, Lily Grant was demoted.

However, Lily Grant had strong connections and abilities. Within a year, she solved several major cases and was now the deputy captain of the criminal police team.

Lily Grant muttered to herself, “Greenhorn. The director and the attending doctor both held back, but he rushed to the front. Truly, the newborn calf fears no tiger—the less you know, the bolder you are.”

Old Carter shrugged beside her, thinking, You call others bold, but when you first joined the criminal police, you were even more impulsive and daring than this rookie doctor—even the chief couldn’t stop you.

Henry Brooks pushed the patient into the operating room, with Brian Foster and the others following.

“Report the patient’s pulse and heartbeat every thirty seconds.”

“Start the blood transfusion immediately.”

“Prepare for thoracotomy.”

“Scalpel.”

As soon as Brian Foster and the others entered, Henry Brooks issued a series of orders. Once on the operating table, Henry Brooks forgot everything else. At first, everyone was stunned, but then Brian Foster started assigning people to carry out Henry Brooks’s instructions.

No turning back now, Brian Foster thought. Tonight was truly unlucky—first a case of feigned death, now being forced into this.

What’s gotten into Young Master Grant today? If he messes up, I’ll have to take the blame.

He could only hope that when the time came, he could explain things to the chairman, and that the chairman, seeing he took the fall for the young master, wouldn’t treat him unfairly. As Brian Foster thought about his own future, he continued to assist Henry Brooks.
