Chapter 19

Howard Sullivan's words, as soon as they were spoken, were undoubtedly taking Henry Brooks's side, making Isaac Bennett's expression even uglier. These two guys were really rebelling, actually both going against him.

After Howard Sullivan finished speaking, his heart was pounding rapidly, as if he had just run a hundred meters.

He knew very well that the hospital had its own rules. Just now, Isaac Bennett had already taken over the patient, and it was a big taboo for other doctors to interfere. But Henry Brooks's status was special, so he had to make a choice at this moment.

As for Isaac Bennett, he had often been scolded by him before, and his skills weren't much better than his own, but in front of patients and himself, he acted even more high and mighty than the director. Taking this opportunity to confront Isaac Bennett in this way made Howard Sullivan feel a surge of excitement.

Isaac Bennett was quite embarrassed, but fortunately at this moment Little Michael had already finished cleaning the child's wound and brought him over. Isaac Bennett glanced coldly at the two of them and snorted, saying nothing more.

A dozen minutes later, an emergency call came in, and Howard Sullivan went out on the call.

Isaac Bennett's original plan was to treat Henry Brooks like an intern, letting him review medical records every day, follow Howard Sullivan on calls, and watch him treat patients, leaving him on the sidelines for a month or half a month to let him know who was boss.

But plans never keep up with changes. As things turned out, all his calculations fell through. The patients who came in afterward were basically seen in normal rotation. As for Howard Sullivan, his main task was to go out on calls, and only when he wasn't around and there was still an emergency would it be Henry Brooks's turn.

However, on this first night, there were three emergency calls, all handled by Howard Sullivan.

That night, Henry Brooks saw sixteen patients, none of whom had any major issues—most were trauma cases. In the ER, if it wasn't serious, they could just bandage the wound, prescribe some medicine, and let them go. If it was serious, they would stabilize the condition and admit the patient, leaving the inpatient department doctors to handle it when they came on shift.

If the hospital is a battlefield between life and death, then the ER doctors and nurses are the vanguard of this war. But in reality, the ER isn't always as tense as it is in movies and TV shows.

Most of the time, the cases are routine and not difficult to handle.

And the methods Henry Brooks used to treat these cases were the most direct, simple, and effective. Even Isaac Bennett, who had been itching to find fault with Henry Brooks, couldn't pick out a single mistake.

What annoyed Isaac Bennett the most was that he had only seen thirteen patients during this shift.

"Everyone did a great job today." After handing over to the day shift doctors, Isaac Bennett specifically asked Henry Brooks and Howard Sullivan to stay: "But I have to talk about your issues, Henry Brooks. Although we're a private hospital, we're also a nationally renowned one, and one of the few private hospitals to reach the top tier. You can't just do whatever you want. Even though most of today's patients didn't have major problems, your methods were a bit irregular. There have to be rules, and you have to follow the doctor's code of conduct."

"If you can find where it says there's a fixed procedure for saving lives, or if you make one up and the country passes it into law, I'll follow it." Henry Brooks said, glancing at Isaac Bennett. "If there's nothing else, I'm off duty."

After speaking, Henry Brooks turned and went to the locker room to change.

"Dr. Lin, I'm heading out too," Howard Sullivan said, quickly catching up to Henry Brooks. "Henry Brooks, wait up. Are you going to eat breakfast in the hospital cafeteria or somewhere else? I know a place with great soup dumplings."

Isaac Bennett had originally wanted to use this to regain some... face, even if Henry Brooks argued with him. He had already thought of what to say. If the argument got too heated, he could use it as an excuse to go to the director.

After all, he was the attending physician, and Henry Brooks was just a newcomer. The director probably assigned him because he felt guilty about taking credit for his work last time. If there was a conflict, the director would definitely transfer him out. Pressuring or squeezing out Henry Brooks was Isaac Bennett's goal, but in the end, Henry Brooks's two sentences left Isaac Bennett at a loss for words, with no face left at all.

Since Howard Sullivan said the food was good, Henry Brooks nodded and agreed to go eat together. This Howard Sullivan was pretty decent—he knew about his background, and being able to do this much was already impressive. At the very least, there was no problem being ordinary friends.

"That soup dumpling place may look small, but the taste is top-notch," Howard Sullivan said as he and Henry Brooks changed and walked out together.

Just as the two reached the door, a voice called from behind: "Henry Brooks... please wait a moment..."

Henry Brooks turned around and saw Kevin Sullivan hurrying over from behind.

Kevin Sullivan looked a bit uneasy. After all, she and Henry Brooks had had conflicts before, and Henry Brooks had even been punished by the chairman because of it. But ever since she last saw Henry Brooks, she felt he was different from before, especially with Longlong's illness...

"I want to talk to you alone." If Longlong's illness could really be solved, it would be a major breakthrough. Kevin Sullivan also knew that winning an international award with this would be no problem. If everything went smoothly, even just the initial research results would make her the youngest associate chief physician in Changhai, maybe even in the whole country.

This kind of thing, of course, couldn't be discussed in front of others. But her slightly awkward expression meant something else entirely in Howard Sullivan's eyes.
