Chapter 18

“Spirit…” Brian Foster thought for a long time before finally finding a suitable word. He pulled Henry Brooks to sit down first: “It’s only been a few days since we last met, and you look so full of energy. As expected of… Henry Brooks, haha…”

“If you keep praising me, Director Foster, I won’t even remember my own surname. I haven’t congratulated you on your promotion yet, Director Foster. Once I get familiar with things these next few days, I’ll celebrate for you.” Henry Brooks only found out at the hospital that Brian Foster had already dropped the “deputy” from his title and had become the real Director Foster.

Henry Brooks only looked more energetic, but the one truly glowing was Brian Foster. However, in front of Henry Brooks, Brian Foster didn’t dare show it too much and waved his hand repeatedly: “No need, no need, we’re all on the same team. Come, I’ll take you to the emergency room first. Our Changzhi Hospital opens three emergency rooms at night, each equipped with two ambulances, three nurses, and three doctors on duty. I take shifts with the three deputy directors. If you need anything, you can always find me.”

As he spoke, Brian Foster had already brought Henry Brooks to the first emergency room.

After all, it was nighttime, so there were only a few people around. It was just the shift change, so everyone in the first emergency room was still there.

Brian Foster personally brought Henry Brooks into the first emergency room and introduced him right away: “Come, let me introduce you all. From now on, you’ll be working together. This is Isaac Bennett, and this is Howard Sullivan. You’ve actually worked together before, so from now on, you must unite sincerely and strive to make the first emergency room the best. Learn from each other and help each other technically.”

“Don’t worry, Director, I’ll definitely lead them well.” Isaac Bennett was the attending physician and also the night shift supervisor of the first emergency room. Isaac Bennett didn’t even look at Henry Brooks. Although they had all benefited from this situation, he was still quite displeased with Henry Brooks.

Howard Sullivan smiled and nodded to Brian Foster in agreement, then reached out to shake hands with Henry Brooks: “Don’t worry, Director. Hello, my name is Howard Sullivan.”

“Hello, Henry Brooks.” Henry Brooks shook hands with Howard Sullivan, using a bit of strength during the handshake.

This subtle gesture made Howard Sullivan secretly delighted—this young master was telling him that he still remembered him.

Seeing that they had all greeted each other, Brian Foster summed up: “From now on, you’re a team. The emergency room night shift is three days a week, with four days off. This rule was set personally by the chairman—very humane. Just this alone, no other hospital in the country can compare.”

Isaac Bennett didn’t really understand but nodded in agreement. Howard Sullivan also smiled and nodded, though he was thinking something else. As for Henry Brooks, he just smiled faintly. In most emergency rooms in the country, doctors work a 24-hour shift and then rest for 48 hours, meaning one day on, two days off. What’s different at Changzhi is that emergency room doctors only need to work twelve hours.

If you’re on the day shift, it’s four days on, three days off.

Just then, a patient came in. Brian Foster told them to get to work and left, as it wouldn’t look good if he lingered too long.

The patient was a ten-year-old child, brought in by family. At home, he had accidentally broken a glass ornament, and glass had gotten stuck in his hand, which was covered in blood.

The family was frantic, but at the hospital, this was a minor issue. If you can control the bleeding by pressing on it, it means it’s not serious.

“Xiao Wang, bring out some recent emergency room cases for Little Henry to look at. If there’s anything he doesn’t understand, teach him. Also…”

“Doctor, please help! The child is bleeding a lot…”

“Please, doctor…”

Isaac Bennett was giving instructions to Howard Sullivan and Henry Brooks from above, but was interrupted by the anxious family, which annoyed him and made him frown.

“It’s just a superficial wound. Now that you’re here, I’ll take care of it. Go register first. Little Michael, take him to treat the wound.” In front of these patients, Isaac Bennett’s attitude was completely different from how he acted in front of Brian Foster, putting on quite the airs. The Little Michael he mentioned was the nurse on duty outside. The other two nurses were assigned to the ambulances and would only go out with them; otherwise, they stayed in the nurse’s station.

After speaking, Isaac Bennett ignored the anxious parents and turned to Henry Brooks and Howard Sullivan: “Since you’re new, you should observe and learn more…”

“If a child injures their finger or palm like this, you can first wrap the wrist to prevent excessive bleeding. This is basic first aid knowledge.” As Henry Brooks spoke, he casually picked up a bandage from the rack and wrapped it around the child’s wrist.

By now, the nurse had come in, leading the crying child away to clean the wound and remove the glass shards.

Seeing Henry Brooks doing something else while he was lecturing, Isaac Bennett’s face darkened: “Henry Brooks, are you listening to me?”

Henry Brooks replied calmly, “My ears are listening.”

“You…” Isaac Bennett pointed at Henry Brooks. This guy was clearly trying to go against him, causing trouble on his very first day in the first emergency room.

Chapter 11: A Beauty’s Invitation

What Isaac Bennett didn’t expect was that the usually quiet Howard Sullivan suddenly spoke up: “Actually, Henry Brooks isn’t an intern, Dr. Bennett, so don’t make things hard for me. I think it’d be better if Henry Brooks led me instead. I just became a full doctor not long ago, so I could really learn a lot from Henry Brooks.”

Any group is a microcosm of society. Even with just a few people, a social network of relationships can form.
