Prologue
“Blake Langley, do you think the sky will ever turn blue again?”
“Blake Langley, does what you said before about marrying me still count?”
“Xiao Bu, it’s so hard for me to breathe…”
“Xiao Bu, I’m sorry, I have to go first…”
“Xiao Bu…”
That wasn’t love, just the habit of mutual support in adversity!
Chapter One: My Name is Blake Langley
Boom!
A clap of thunder split the sky, turning into several arcs of blue light that struck the barren hillside where only a single tree stood, splitting the only tree as thick as a bowl at the top of the slope in two.
Blake Langley sat up abruptly, staring blankly at the broken tree just a few meters away. His first feeling wasn’t that he had escaped death, but confusion.
The thunder was still roaring, but the sound was gradually fading into the distance.
Blake Langley looked up at the distant sky, a hazy gray. Some tall buildings, at this moment, appeared to Blake Langley as only vague outlines.
“Chirp…” An unknown bird let out a mournful cry, flashed across Blake Langley’s blurry vision, and in the blink of an eye disappeared into the depths of those gray, steel-and-concrete silhouettes.
Just as Blake Langley sensed something was wrong, his head began to ache violently, making it impossible for him to keep thinking.
Bang! It was as if something had struck the ground beneath his feet, causing a violent tremor.
Not yet fully awake, Blake Langley instinctively looked for a place to lie down. The next moment, he stared blankly into the distance. In the gray sky, one white pillar of light after another appeared. These white beams weren’t falling from the sky, but rising from the ground, filling his field of vision, making even the polluted, gray sky brighten.
An earthquake? No, this scene is so familiar, it happened once before…
“Blake Langley…” A clear, anxious voice called out, and a slender figure ran up from the bottom of the slope.
When Blake Langley saw the delicate face of the newcomer, he blurted out instinctively, “Evan Sutton…”
As the girl in the light yellow dress drew closer, Blake Langley’s memories gradually became clearer, and the intense pain in his head eased a lot.
Evan Sutton, his wife—but how many years ago was that?
That’s right, this is Haiyang Medical University. My name is Blake Langley, I’m a senior this year…
Before Blake Langley could think further, Evan Sutton was already standing in front of him. “Blake Langley, was that just now an earthquake? But why would there be beams of light during an earthquake?”
Only then did Blake Langley realize that the white beams of light had long since disappeared, and the sky had returned to its hazy gray.
Blake Langley was still shaken by the earlier scene and Evan Sutton’s sudden appearance, unable to recover for a moment.
Evan Sutton didn’t seem to notice Blake Langley’s oddness and continued, “As long as you’re okay. But honestly, your pride is a bit much over such a small thing. Come on, let’s go back together.”
By now Blake Langley had come to his senses. He stood up again, casually brushed the dust off his clothes, and smiled, “Cen Cen, thank you for worrying about me. I’m really fine, I stopped caring about that a long time ago. I just came here to reflect on my eventful life, that’s all. Don’t worry, you go back first, I’ll sit a while longer.”
“Heh, remember, you’re only eighteen. You’re a senior now because you got into the youth class at Haiyang Medical University. So enough with the reflecting on a life full of hardships. And, it’s only been a day since I last saw you, but you’ve gotten so glib—Cen Cen isn’t for you to call. Since you want to reflect on life, take your time. I’m heading back.” From Blake Langley’s expression and tone, Evan Sutton could tell he was really fine, and her worry was unnecessary.
But that look in his eyes… Evan Sutton shook her head hard. Blake Langley was the youngest in the class after switching majors for the youth class—how could he have such a world-weary look? She must be imagining things.
Blake Langley stood still. Cen Cen isn’t for him to call? He’d been calling her that for twenty years. He sighed inwardly, just waved his hand, “It’s fine, you go ahead, I’m really okay.”
Looking at Blake Langley, Evan Sutton suddenly laughed, “Should I get you a paper cup of water, so you can sit down shaking your hand and say you’re fine?”
“Really? If you have one, I can imitate Stephen Chow.” Blake Langley chuckled.
“Yeah, right. Looks like you’re really fine. See you.” Evan Sutton turned and walked a few steps, then suddenly looked back and said, “Blake Langley, do you think the sky will ever turn blue again?”
Blake Langley looked up at the gray sky and gave a brilliant smile, “If one day I can come back, I’ll definitely make the sky blue again.”
Evan Sutton was stunned, then said, “I’m done talking to you, you go on composing your poetry.”
This time, after speaking, Evan Sutton quickly left. Clearly, the tremor and the strange beams of light hadn’t really caught Evan Sutton’s attention, and her earlier question to Blake Langley was just a casual remark. Blake Langley’s answer left her baffled, thinking he was just being deliberately mysterious.
