Chapter 10

Ever since Blake Langley mentioned that Lancomycin was not perfect and advised him not to use it for treatment, he had been thinking about discussing this matter with Blake Langley. Since the introduction of Lancomycin, only Blake Langley and he himself had similar thoughts.

After returning to the hospital, Jack Jefferson didn’t even go for dinner and waited for Blake Langley in the emergency department. To Jack Jefferson’s disappointment, he waited until almost eight o’clock in the evening and still didn’t see Blake Langley.

This made Jack Jefferson regret not getting Blake Langley’s contact information; he really should have at least gotten Blake Langley’s contact details.

“Wait, who are you looking for? This is the office area, if you want to see a doctor, it’s across the hall…” Just as Jack Jefferson was getting anxious, nurse Xiao Fu’s voice came from outside.

Jack Jefferson hurried out, and when he saw Blake Langley standing in the corridor, he let out a long sigh of relief. “You finally made it, come in, quickly.”

Jack Jefferson said hastily.

Blake Langley smiled apologetically and said, “Sorry, I’m a bit late.”

He had been so absorbed in practicing the Yijin Jing that he didn’t snap out of it until after seven in the evening, awakened by hunger. He quickly grabbed a bite to eat and then came to see Jack Jefferson.

Jack Jefferson didn’t care at all whether Blake Langley was early or late. As soon as they entered the room, Jack Jefferson asked eagerly, “Blake Langley, you’re from Haiyang Medical University. Earlier you said Lancomycin was not perfect—was that the research of some senior at Haiyang Medical University?”

Even if Blake Langley was from Haiyang Medical University, Jack Jefferson didn’t believe he had the ability to research Lancomycin himself. The most likely scenario was that some professor at Haiyang Medical University had discovered a problem with Lancomycin and mentioned it in class. As long as he kept Blake Langley here as an intern, he would eventually have the chance to meet the professor who found the issue with Lancomycin.

Blake Langley sat down, smiled, and said, “No, it’s just my own research. I used the school’s laboratory and a lot of patient case data from those who had used Lancomycin, and finally came to this conclusion. Although Lancomycin can inhibit nearly twenty types of cancer cells, it has a fatal flaw: patients injected with Lancomycin will develop an entirely new type of harmful cell in their bodies. This new cell isn’t a cancer cell, but it severely damages the patient’s liver and spleen, and is almost incurable.”

“So it really does harm the spleen…” Jack Jefferson’s hands were trembling, as if muttering to himself, even forgetting to question how a senior student like Blake Langley could have achieved such top-level research.

Blake Langley didn’t interrupt Jack Jefferson. Jack Jefferson was clearly someone deeply dedicated to academic research; Blake Langley wondered why he had been assigned to the emergency department. His guess was that Jack Jefferson had offended the leadership—something Blake Langley himself had experienced before.

After a long while, Jack Jefferson finally came back to his senses and looked at Blake Langley. “You’re only a senior, how could you have discovered this problem? And if it’s such a fatal flaw, why have all the people who used Lancomycin recovered so well?”

Blake Langley smiled slightly. “Although I’m a senior, I’ve already finished all the courses I need to learn. I believe my medical skills are no worse than most doctors. Of course, you probably won’t believe that, but it doesn’t matter—as long as you can offer me an internship. As for why people who used Lancomycin have recovered so well, it’s because the harmful cell’s growth cycle is five to seven years. After the first injection of Lancomycin, within five to seven years, the patient may face death.”

Jack Jefferson let out a breath and said slowly, “Blake Langley, I believe your research, because mine is quite similar. But my research is more speculative, and I haven’t found a complete harmful cell, nor did I discover that this cell also damages the liver. If your research and hypothesis are correct, then next year will be when Lancomycin’s problems emerge.”

Blake Langley nodded. “That’s right, there will indeed be a big problem next year. Director Jefferson, can I stay here and work?”

That Lancomycin would have problems was certain, but compared to nuclear war, in Blake Langley’s eyes, the issue with Lancomycin was nothing.

Jack Jefferson nodded. “You can stay here as an intern, salary is three thousand…”

Blake Langley frowned. Three thousand wasn’t enough for him to live on.

Before Blake Langley could say anything, Jack Jefferson continued, “Besides the salary, there’s also a bonus, which can vary, but it adds up to about ten thousand a month. But I have to tell you, your internship won’t lead to a permanent position. Second, you need to assist me in researching Lancomycin. Third, you shouldn’t treat patients—the gap between theory and practice is huge.”

In fact, Jack Jefferson’s main reason for keeping Blake Langley was to have him assist in researching Lancomycin. As for the promised ten thousand salary, he planned to pay it out of his own pocket.

“Deal.” Blake Langley clapped his hands and said.

His main goal wasn’t to get a permanent position, but to survive.

Chapter 7: Frozen Silkworm Disease

Blake Langley was very satisfied. This kind of job where he got paid for doing almost nothing was his favorite. Most of the time, he didn’t even need to go to the hospital. The only downside was that every day he had to spend four hours with Jack Jefferson researching Lancomycin. But for him, this was already quite good.
