Chapter 5

(Note: When attack is lower than the enemy's defense, final damage = base damage ÷ (1 + attack-defense difference × 5%); that is, when attack is 10 points lower than defense, damage is only 2/3, when attack is 20 points lower than defense, damage is only 1/2, and when attack is 40 points lower than defense, damage is only 1/3. So low-level troops fighting high-level troops is extremely painful, and it's hard to even display their normal strength.)

Morale: 1 (Troops with higher morale gain extra damage when attacking troops with lower morale, and are less likely to have deserters when defeated.)

Luck: 0 (There will be no lucky effect of double damage, nor the unlucky effect of halved damage. Each point of luck increases the chance of double critical hits by 1%.)

Stamina: 100 (Troops will continuously lose stamina during battle or marching. When stamina drops below 10%, the hero troop's morale, speed, and damage will weaken. After a hero dies and is resurrected once, their stamina will be in a weakened state below 10%. The stamina system allows players to use large numbers of weak units to exhaust the stamina of powerful enemy troops, achieving self-preservation or even victory.)

After character creation was complete, the scene changed with a flash of white light, and David Carter appeared in a magnificent, solemn hall. Floating in the air was a one-winged angel named Sapphire, who looked down with authority at the dozens of players whispering and asking each other questions below.

The Hall of Destiny. This is where players who chose random draws arrive after character creation—essentially, the job assignment center. Since the player chose random, their starting location is also random, but an NPC examiner will ask the player a question, and then decide the player's destination based on their answer.

At this moment, white light flashed repeatedly as more players entered the hall, then with a bang, the main doors closed, and the entire hall suddenly darkened. A majestic voice echoed through the hall:

—"Welcome to the Continent of Heroes, children of destiny, but you are very unlucky to have encountered me! I despise those who let others control their fate, but I love the feeling of controlling others' destinies. Now, the test begins!"

In the dim hall, a spotlight suddenly shone on a player named "Evil White Wolf" in the crowd. Dozens of sympathetic gazes from other players turned in unison to this first examinee! It's already the third day since the server opened, and all new players know how tricky these examiners can be. The sacrifices of those who go first provide valuable personality data on the examiner for those who follow, so they can give the most reliable answers.

Sapphire said coldly, "You have received the favor of the gods and possess a decent lord specialty, but I don't think you deserve it. Answer me, what is the most important thing for a lord?"

The crowd of players couldn't help but stir! Even the NPC said his specialty was good, so he must be in luck!

Evil White Wolf coughed and said, "Of course, it's managing mines."

Sapphire chuckled, "A very fitting answer for your specialty. In that case, I'll grant your wish and assign you to mine in the haunted pit of the Death Mountains!"

"Damn!" With a flash of white light, Evil White Wolf disappeared.

Is that map really a place for newbies? Everyone felt a chill but couldn't help feeling a bit of schadenfreude. Now, they had a preliminary impression of just how devious this examiner was.

The spotlight then shone on a female player named "Evan Swift", who jumped in fright.

—"Another one with a lord specialty. What do you think is most important for a lord?"

The female player stammered, "Ma-managing a farm..."

Sapphire sneered, "A very fitting answer for your specialty!"

All the players couldn't help but sigh inwardly—learn from the previous example, why not wise up!

—"Very well, listen to the question: There are 450 chickens and ducks on the farm. After selling half the chickens and buying 30 more ducks, the number of chickens is twice the number of ducks. How many chickens and ducks were there originally? My patience is limited, answer quickly. If you can't even do basic math, what right do you have to be a lord? I'll assign you a suitable job on the farm, like cleaning chicken poop!"

The whole hall was in an uproar! They're even asking elementary school math questions? But who knows the answer?

Evan Swift immediately shouted, "384 chickens, 66 ducks!"

The examiner exclaimed excitedly, "Correct answer, plus 10 points! Your talent should go where it belongs!"

The whole hall was in an uproar! That mental math is insane! The question wasn't hard, but answering so quickly is impressive!

At the same time, ten beams of golden light rained down on the female player, and her level instantly rose to 10! Then, with a flash of white light, she disappeared!

The whole hall was shocked! Answering an elementary school question and instantly jumping 10 levels? That's ridiculous!

Sure enough, a player in the hall shouted angrily, "Nonsense! Unfair! Totally unfair!"

The spotlight instantly focused on a young man about 20 years old—Blake Storm! Suddenly, everyone noticed he had a steel sword at his waist, wore leather armor, and carried a thick iron-and-wood shield on his back—he was actually a Shield Guard! A level 3 Templar Shield Guard!
