Chapter 6

"I'm here to see a doctor." William Carter answered honestly. Since childhood, William Carter had always been very afraid of certain types of people—one was teachers, the other was doctors. So even though the other person was about the same age as him, William Carter still answered nervously, just like a primary school student being questioned by a teacher.

"What illness?" The female doctor had a maturity and graceful composure that didn't match her age, and her voice was very pleasant. When Xiaoyu spoke, her voice was crisp and clear, but when this doctor spoke, it was gentle and soft.

"Injury." William Carter replied.

"It was those two people just now who did it." William Carter added, which also explained why William Carter had been so flustered earlier. After speaking, William Carter unconsciously touched his nose.

"Your name is William Carter, right? Come with me." The female doctor glanced at William Carter's gesture and said calmly, walking toward the medical room.

Watching the female doctor's back, William Carter was puzzled. How did she know his name?

William Carter followed her. He had to admit, the female doctor's back was very attractive. Under the loose doctor's coat, he could vaguely sense her alluring figure, which stirred a strange feeling in William Carter's heart.

William Carter shook his head, trying to drive away the messy thoughts in his mind.

The two of them entered the medical room.

"Where are your injuries?" The female doctor looked William Carter up and down and asked. What surprised her was that this boy was very tall and well-built. With her own height, she could barely reach his eyes. Judging by his faded suit, his family probably wasn't well-off. It made sense—who from a good family would come to this hospital?

"Abdomen and back." Seeing the doctor's gaze fall on his suit, William Carter felt a bit inferior and answered.

"Take off your clothes." The female doctor said, sitting down and writing something as she spoke, "My name is Emily Clark, you can call me Dr. Clark. Aunt Wu has mentioned you to me. While Dr. Miller is away, if you have any injuries, I can help treat you."

Hearing that this doctor, Emily Clark, who was about the same age as him, wanted him to take off his clothes, William Carter blushed for the first time, looking a bit awkward. But this was a hospital, and there was no need to be shy about such things. William Carter tried to relax and took off his shirt.

Dr. Clark looked up at William Carter, her pen pausing for a moment. Her gaze fell on William Carter's body. His physique was well-proportioned and strong, with clearly defined muscles. But what caught Dr. Clark's attention wasn't the muscles, but the wounds all over his body—dense, numbering in the hundreds, leaving hardly any intact skin. Many of the wounds were on vital areas like the chest and abdomen, and they were all life-threatening. She couldn't understand how William Carter was still alive.

Chapter 3 Paradise

Dr. Clark couldn't help but glance at William Carter's face. There was still a boyish shyness and awkwardness on his face, but beneath this plain, somewhat handsome face, how many untold stories were hidden? How much hardship had he endured?

"Dr. Clark, are you a volunteer?" William Carter finally recovered from his earlier embarrassment and asked.

"Yes, I'm a volunteer from the medical university, here for my internship." Dr. Clark said, starting to take medicine from the cabinet.

A top student from the medical university, with a bright future ahead. William Carter nodded and didn't ask further.

While applying medicine for William Carter, Dr. Clark's fingers couldn't help but tremble slightly. Usually calm, she now felt waves of emotion inside. Seeing the scars all over his back made her feel very unsettled as she applied the ointment, and she was even afraid of hurting William Carter when touching his wounds.

"If it hurts, you can say so." Dr. Clark said, unconsciously lightening her touch.

William Carter smiled faintly and didn't respond. This kind of pain was nothing to William Carter. Instead, it was Dr. Clark's cool yet smooth fingertips touching his skin that made William Carter's face flush slightly.

After finishing the treatment and bandaging William Carter, Dr. Clark let out a soft sigh, wiping the sweat from her forehead with her slender fingers. This was probably the most difficult case in her medical career so far.

William Carter put his clothes back on, gave Dr. Clark a polite smile, and said, "Thank you."

"You're welcome. Be careful on your way home and keep your wounds clean." Dr. Clark reminded him.

"Okay. Dr. Clark, you should be careful too. Those two might come looking for you again." William Carter said with some concern.

"Don't worry. I practiced some martial arts when I was in the army. Two or three ordinary people can't do anything to me." Dr. Clark said lightly.

William Carter was a bit surprised. Dr. Clark looked so gentle and quiet, not at all like someone who had trained or served in the army. William Carter thought of those fair hands that had just rested on his right wrist—maybe she really did have some skills.

"Well then, goodbye, Dr. Clark." William Carter said, getting up to leave.

"Goodbye." Dr. Clark said, watching William Carter's figure disappear at the door, and sighed. Since coming to the slums, she had seen too much misfortune.

Leaving the hospital, William Carter looked at the sky. It was already afternoon. Xiaoyu should be out of school by now, so William Carter headed home.
