Chapter 20

It was dinnertime. William Carter logged out of the game. Lily had already come back and was cooking. She had changed out of that white dress, neatly placing it by the bed, and was now wearing a somewhat worn, patched white shirt. Her long hair was tied into a bundle and hung down her back. The simple outfit made the girl look even more pure and innocent. The loose white shirt still couldn’t hide her graceful figure.

Lily was becoming more and more beautiful; she must have been pursued by many boys at school. Thinking of this, William Carter smiled slightly.

Maybe because it was a bit hot, tiny beads of sweat appeared on her clean, fair face. Lily wiped her smooth forehead with her hand.

“Brother, you’re out.” Lily saw William Carter get up from the bed and said happily, her lips pursed, two shallow dimples appearing at the corners of her mouth.

Lily was always so full of energy and youthful spirit. Her sweet smile was like that of an angel, making William Carter forget all his troubles. She was his only family in this world, the only reason for William Carter to keep going. If it weren’t for this will to support him, William Carter probably wouldn’t have survived until now.

“Mm.”

“How was the game?”

“It was okay,” William Carter replied. As soon as the game was mentioned, William Carter couldn’t help but think of the two skills, Backstab and Eviscerate. Why had he tried so many times but never succeeded? What exactly was the problem? Thinking about the game, William Carter couldn’t help but feel a bit eager again.

Lily brought the food to the table.

No matter what he did, William Carter always had the habit of being extremely focused and serious, striving to do his best. Once he became interested in something, he would devote all his attention to it, completely forgetting that it was time to eat.

Seeing William Carter’s expression, Lily thought he wasn’t doing well in the game. Seeing him still deep in thought, she didn’t disturb him, resting her chin in her hand and gazing at William Carter in a daze.

“Brother, I believe you can do it.” Lily’s bright eyes were misted with a faint haze, full of admiration. In Lily’s eyes, William Carter was capable of anything, always like a big tree, giving her warmth and sheltering her from the wind and rain.

“What did you say?” William Carter snapped out of his thoughts and asked.

“All right, stop thinking about it. You’re about to marry the game. It’s time to eat.” Lily pouted playfully.

Hearing Lily’s words, William Carter couldn’t help but smile, affectionately flicking Lily’s nose. “Let’s eat.”

Lily wrinkled her delicate nose to show her displeasure, but two shallow dimples appeared at the corners of her mouth.

After dinner, William Carter entered the game again. In the game, dawn was just breaking.

William Carter went to an NPC shop and spent one silver coin to buy ten of the lowest-grade breads. Bread was an item that restored health. After killing monsters, if your health was low, sitting down to eat bread could speed up health recovery, thus improving monster-killing efficiency. These things were not to be skimped on.

William Carter headed straight for the respawn point of the Desert Sand Snake. The Desert Sand Snake was a monster that respawned rather slowly. Since most players were still low-level, there were still quite a few Desert Sand Snakes around. Once players leveled up a bit and flocked over, it would become very difficult to find Desert Sand Snakes to respawn.

To maintain a level advantage, you had to get ahead of most players; otherwise, grinding the same monsters with a crowd would seriously affect leveling speed.

William Carter checked his skill bar. Not being able to use Eviscerate and Backstab had always been a sore point for him. These two skills were so important that, even though he couldn’t use them yet, William Carter had to keep trying.

Compared to Eviscerate, Backstab seemed a bit easier. He wondered if Backstab and Reverse Backstab were related—could it also be about using the force generated by body rotation to stab into the enemy?

Thinking of this, William Carter’s eyes lit up. Maybe he could give it a try.

He used Stealth to sneak up on a Desert Sand Snake. With a flick of his dagger, he drove it into the back of the snake’s head, perfectly stunning it with a sneak attack.

William Carter tilted his body slightly, rotating about thirty degrees to the side. Using the force from the rotation, he stabbed the dagger fiercely into the Desert Sand Snake’s body.

Puff—the dagger sank to the hilt into the Desert Sand Snake’s body.

A damage value of over twenty floated up from the Desert Sand Snake’s head.

System: Backstab skill completion 63%, dealt 68% skill damage, gained 1 combo point.

Although the completion wasn’t high, this was the first time William Carter had successfully used the Backstab skill, which was significant.

After the Backstab, he followed up with a series of normal attacks. When the Desert Sand Snake turned to attack William Carter, he sidestepped, dodged, and performed a Reverse Backstab. The dagger in his hand smoothly pierced through the snake’s back armor—100% completion.

The seamless attacks dealt over 160 points of damage to the Desert Sand Snake.

William Carter continued to use a sticking tactic to whittle down the Desert Sand Snake’s health. When William Carter’s own health was down to 78%, the Desert Sand Snake collapsed limply to the ground.
