Chapter 3

Eric Bennett is a section-level official. He has a fair and rosy official aura. The official auras of those people he sees on the street may have different hues, but the differences aren’t that great. Of course, there are a few with very faint auras, but they don’t seem to be section-level people; they should be those with the potential to become officials. All of this shows that to become a section chief, at the very least, your official aura must have some color—even if it’s just a little. Let alone a colored aura, right now William Harris feels that he doesn’t even have that white kind of official aura.

Looking at other people’s official aura, then at his own situation, can someone without any official aura become an official? William Harris realized his life was a bit pathetic, just like hoping to win the lottery—if you don’t even have two yuan, winning the lottery will never happen to you!

Figuring out his own official aura was now the top priority. William Harris wanted to be an official; he hoped to possess an official aura.

Main Text Chapter 2: The Discovery in the Office

With his head still wrapped in gauze, he went to work, and the road was filled with greetings. This made William Harris somewhat regret coming to work injured; if he’d known, he should have just worn a hat!

Seeing William Harris come to work injured, Director David Carter patted William Harris on the shoulder and said, “Good job, young man. It’s rare to find comrades like you these days!”

Lily Scott, the voluptuous beauty, gossiped, “Little William, what exactly happened? Why did you go break up a fight? Was it because of a relative?”

William Harris gave a wry smile and said, “I was just passing by, saw them arguing too fiercely, and wanted to break it up. I didn’t expect to get hit on the head!”

Michael Reed didn’t believe it and said, “No way, you got hit with a brick just for breaking up a fight?” His face showed an expression that there must be more to the story.

Looking at this person who was said to have connections in the city, William Harris deliberately sighed and said, “It’s really hard to be a good person!”

Everyone in the room burst out laughing.

Walking over to his seat, William Harris started to get busy with his own work. He had the heaviest workload in the office. Although his head still ached a bit, he didn’t dare slack off. What made him suffer was that David Carter, who had just praised him, immediately dumped a pile of work on him, while David Carter’s confidant Henry White ended up with nothing to do.

The office quieted down for a while. As William Harris worked, he secretly observed the others in the office.

David Carter appeared very authoritative, with his desk placed in the brightest spot. Sitting in his seat, he could see every member of the office at a glance. He wore glasses and was intently reading a newspaper. William Harris noticed that he had been reading that newspaper for a long time, as if there was some secret hidden inside.

Brian Brooks was a veteran comrade. An old notebook sat on his desk, and he wore a pair of blue sleeve protectors. With a fountain pen in hand, he was copying content from a document. William Harris had noticed long ago that it was a speech given by the county party secretary at the beginning of the year.

Lily Scott was probably the most carefree person. She was quite attractive, with alluring eyes and a great figure. She had been looking into a small mirror for a long time, holding it up while squeezing out the little blackheads on her face.

Henry White was purely a sycophant. William Harris noticed that he was always watching David Carter. Whenever David Carter’s teacup ran low, he would immediately rush over to refill it, his face full of expressive flattery.

Jessica James was the beautiful newcomer to the office, truly stunning. She had gotten in through the civil service exam. It was said that during her exam, a provincial leader happened to be inspecting, and stood by her desk watching her answer for a while. Maybe it was because her answers were good, or maybe the leader was taken by her beauty and gave a hint, which helped her pass—anyway, the gossip was wild. Perhaps because she was new, she seemed a bit reserved. The documents David Carter gave her to read had been in her hands for a long time, and she was imitating old Brooks by taking notes and making excerpts, looking very diligent.

Looking at Little James, William Harris was momentarily lost in thought, sighing for her in his heart. Such a beautiful woman—who knows if she can escape the lecherous eyes fixed on her. Of course, he counted himself among them, but he was the kind of powerless little guy—willing but unable!

“Little James, take these materials to Secretary Reed.” David Carter suddenly said to Jessica James. With a sleight of hand, he produced a document. William Harris remembered it seemed to be a report on poverty alleviation written by John Reed, which had already been sent to Secretary Reed. Why send it again?

***David Carter! William Harris knew that David Carter must have noticed Secretary Reed’s interest in Little James and was playing the role of a go-between. But he could only curse him in his heart and hope that Little James wouldn’t get swallowed up. If he hadn’t been secretly observing David Carter, he never would have realized he’d pull this trick!

Watching Little James walk out, Lily Scott curled her lips and said, “Little James’s figure is really something. Director sure knows how to handle things.” William sighed to himself—who says women aren’t smart? She clearly saw through David Carter’s little scheme.
