Chapter 17

Seeing William Harris's expression, Little James felt an urge to go over and step on him. If it were Henry White or Michael Reed, as long as she hinted a little, they would definitely compete to pay the bill. She really couldn't figure out what William Harris was thinking—could it be that he just wasn't interested in her at all? Deliberately straightening her chest, Little James still had strong confidence in her own figure.

She stole a glance at William Harris, and sure enough, saw that William Harris's eyes were fixed. Only then did Jessica James feel a bit more assured.

Ever since William Harris had seen through Little James's true nature, he had always been wary of her. Although he secretly liked Little James, he knew he wasn't the kind of man she was looking for, so he gave up on the idea. Now, William Harris had become somewhat indifferent to desire. However, when actually facing this beauty, he still couldn't help but have some thoughts.

"What do you think about what happened today?" Jessica James didn't waste words and asked directly.

"What thing?" William Harris pretended not to understand.

"What else? The matter of the Party Secretary and Deputy Secretary coming to see David Carter. I don't believe you don't have any thoughts about it." Little James glared at William Harris, and that look made him a bit dazed.

"Isn't it just the leaders talking to a subordinate about work? What's the big deal? What could possibly happen?" William Harris feigned ignorance.

Seeing she couldn't get anything out of William Harris, Little James took a big sip of her drink, feeling a bit annoyed.

Amused by Little James's expression, William Harris said, "Did you discover something?"

Seeing William Harris finally get to the point, Little James's mood immediately improved.

"Brother Harris, last night I got word that the county discipline inspection commission is investigating our township," Little James said very seriously.

How would you know about the discipline inspection commission's investigation? The person who told you—could he be someone important, like the county Party Secretary? While saying this, he was secretly shocked. It seemed Little James had some wild connections!

Since Little James had revealed such important news, it showed she was at least somewhat sincere. William Harris dropped his joking tone and said, "This is indeed a bit strange. Connecting it with the news you got, something is probably about to happen."

Little James nodded and said, "If the discipline inspection commission is investigating, it must be about some disciplinary violation. Secretary Zhang is the county Party Secretary's man. If the county Party Secretary hadn't given the nod, who would dare investigate him? I don't think this is a small matter."

Right now, the county Party Secretary had all the power, so this situation was indeed odd.

As soon as Little James mentioned the investigation, William Harris started thinking about it. One possibility was that it was just for show, with no real evidence—just for appearances. The other was that the evidence was solid, and not even the county Party Secretary could stop it. Which was it?

He shared his thoughts with Little James.

"I think what happened this morning was the first scenario," Little James said after thinking for a moment. "From the fact that both secretaries went to see David Carter, they must have gotten the news too. They're trying to patch up any loopholes in advance."

Watching Little James speak, William Harris was deeply impressed by her political sensitivity. This woman was made for politics—she could see the essence of things from subtle clues. If he didn't have the ability to see official aura, he probably wouldn't have this kind of awareness.

After their analysis, things became clearer. The discipline inspection commission must have received a report, maybe even higher-ups had received it. The county Party Secretary, unable to suppress the matter, agreed to an investigation of Huan Cheng Township. Or perhaps the discipline inspection commission was acting on its own authority.

As someone close to the county Party Secretary, even if the Secretary didn't tell Ryan Reed directly, he would at least give some kind of hint. Ryan Reed must have gotten the news right away, and they were now discussing how to cover all the bases so the discipline inspection commission wouldn't find anything. As the one who handled many matters, David Carter surely knew a lot. What happened this morning was just a panicked move by the two secretaries.

The reason for this conclusion, for William Harris, was the change in official aura he observed—though of course, he would never tell anyone about that.

"If something really does happen, what will the outcome be?" William Harris asked himself, repeatedly stabbing his chopsticks into the table.

"For us, David Carter will fall, and Lily Scott and Henry White will lose their market!" Little James's eyes sparkled.

"Little James, aren't you worried? Everyone sees you as the Secretary's woman." William Harris deliberately emphasized the word "woman."

"I knew you'd think that way!" Little James gave William Harris a look of disdain, her mood instantly souring as she took another big sip of her drink.

"He never did anything to me," Little James said, looking at William Harris. She sighed and continued, "Believe it or not, there's really nothing between me and him. I wouldn't cheapen myself for that old man."

Hearing this, William Harris couldn't help but feel a huge sense of relief, though he didn't know why he cared so much about whether Little James had given herself to Ryan Reed. Still, he didn't quite believe what Little James said.
