Chapter 8

He slowly channeled that mysterious power within him, hiding a multicolored stone in his palm. Along the way, he proceeded with great caution. At first, he still saw a few people coming out of Xici Town to hunt demonic beasts or harvest thatch, but as he ventured deeper into the grasslands, he found himself completely alone. However, William Carter’s luck was a bit worse today—he walked the whole morning without seeing a single demonic beast. Just as he was feeling a bit dejected and considering returning to Xici Town, the tall grass ahead suddenly shook violently. A petite young girl was fiercely battling a demonic beast he had never seen before.

The girl already had many bloodstains on her body, and the beast’s fur was in disarray. But after all, demonic beasts are more resilient than humans. The short sword in the girl’s hand was gradually losing the strength to fend off the beast’s claws and fangs. William Carter felt a surge of compassion and immediately shouted, hurling the multicolored stone.

This strike was made on the spur of the moment, and somehow, the mysterious power within him suddenly accelerated, flooding into his palm. The multicolored stone under William Carter’s control sped up a notch and struck the wolf-like demonic beast hard in the abdomen.

Normally, it would take two or three hits to kill a demonic rabbit, but this strike, infused with the mysterious power transformed by the Milky Way’s water, was astonishingly powerful. It instantly blasted a bloody hole in the demon wolf’s belly. The girl seized the opportunity, leapt forward, and stabbed her sword through the demon wolf’s throat. The wolf-shaped beast let out several unwilling roars, struggled for a moment, and then collapsed with a crash.

“Thank you so much!”

The girl caught her breath for a while, regained some energy, and nodded to William Carter in thanks. She looked at most seventeen or eighteen years old—about the age of a high school student on Earth—but her manner was quite seasoned, suggesting she had lived in Fengzhou for a long time.

Chapter Six Emily Thompson

“You’re welcome. Did that demonic beast injure you? Do you want me to escort you back to Xici Town?”

“No need, these wounds are nothing. I’ll be fine after a short rest. Are you new here? I don’t think I’ve seen you before?” The girl was very lively, her face streaked with sweat and dust. Although it looked a bit funny, it gave her a unique youthful vibrance.

“I just drifted up from Mirror Lake yesterday. To be honest, I still sometimes wonder if I’m dreaming.” William Carter shrugged, flashing a carefree smile.

“If only it were a dream. My name is Emily Thompson. I’ve been in Fengzhou for almost four years. Sometimes, when I think of my parents and younger brother, I always hope that the next time I wake up from a dream, I’ll be back home.”

William Carter couldn’t help but laugh and comforted her, “Your parents and brother will always have lives different from yours. Although it’s always hard to leave loved ones, with time, you’ll slowly forget. By the way, what era are you from?” Since arriving in Fengzhou, William Carter had developed a habit of always asking which dynasty others came from.

Emily Thompson smiled and replied, “I’m from the late Yuan Dynasty, a disciple of the White Lotus Sect. I was killed by Yuan soldiers when our army attacked a county town. Later, I heard in the underworld that it was our White Lotus Sect’s Little Ming King who overthrew the Yuan, those foreign rulers. It’s just a pity that after a few hundred years, the country was taken over by bad people again.”

William Carter secretly wiped his brow, thinking to himself, “White Lotus Sect! This world really is amazing. I just met a foot soldier from Yue’s army, and now here’s a female disciple of the White Lotus Sect.”

After resting for a while, Emily Thompson took a small yellow cloth pouch from her waist, shook it over the ground, and put the demon wolf inside. William Carter stared in astonishment and asked, “How can your pouch fit such a big demon wolf? Is this some secret magic of the White Lotus Sect? I heard that Tang Saier and some Daoist named Xu could turn beans into soldiers—I always thought that was just folklore.”

Emily Thompson patted her waist and replied contentedly, “This isn’t a White Lotus Sect spell. Only the sect leader knows our sect’s magic, and it’s never taught to disciples. As long as you can get a piece of Tianluo Cloth, Old Howard in Xici Town will make you a bag. He once helped an immortal from the Pangu Continent, and the immortal taught him how to make these bags that can hold a lot of things. Old Howard is very kind and always makes them for free, never asking for any reward.”

“It’s a pity I don’t have any Tianluo Cloth, otherwise I’d really like to have such a treasure.” William Carter was a bit envious of Emily Thompson. Yesterday, he and David Miller had gone to great lengths to bring five demon rabbits back to Xici Town. With this treasure, he could have saved so much effort.

“Tianluo Cloth is extremely rare. I only found one and a half pieces myself—made one bag for myself, and the remaining half isn’t enough to make another. Otherwise, I wouldn’t mind giving you one.”

William Carter asked curiously, “What does Tianluo Cloth look like? Is it sold in Xici Town?”

Emily Thompson shook her head. “I’ve never seen anyone sell Tianluo Cloth in Xici Town. As for what it looks like, just look at this.” The girl produced a piece of yellow cloth, and William Carter was instantly overjoyed.

“So that means I can have a bag like yours too.”

He took out the roll of yellow cloth and the stone that the old fisherman by Mirror Lake had given him. Sure enough, it was exactly the same as the Tianluo Cloth in Emily Thompson’s hand.

“Huh, you just arrived in Fengzhou—how did you get such a precious item?”
