Chapter 16

Samuel Carter shouted loudly, and suddenly a huge shield appeared in his hands. He locked onto the demon wolf’s position and slid down with the shield, pushing it forward. The demon wolf was too focused on fighting with David Miller and Henry Carter to expect such a surprise move from the enemy, and was slammed hard to the ground by Samuel Carter's shield.

At this moment, William Carter also understood why Samuel Carter had just told Emily Thompson to pull him back as soon as possible! Because after Samuel Carter's strike, he himself was thrown into a dizzy mess and couldn’t get up at all. But Samuel Carter didn’t just hit with the shield on purpose—while the demon wolf was dazed, the young man quickly slapped a talisman onto the demon wolf’s neck, then loudly signaled for Emily Thompson to pull him back quickly.

Emily Thompson pulled with both hands, and this little girl was surprisingly strong. Samuel Carter, who weighed at least over two hundred jin, was easily dragged out of the melee by her.

After being smashed from above by Samuel Carter's flying shield, the demon wolf immediately started bleeding from its seven orifices, and its once glossy fur became stained and dirty. With the talisman slapped on by Samuel Carter, the yellow demonic aura released from the totem on the demon wolf’s neck weakened. Although it still managed to heal its wounds, the effect was far less miraculous than before.

“This demon wolf can’t heal itself anymore. Everyone be careful—don’t get hurt by its dying counterattack!” David Miller reminded everyone in the midst of the chaos. The demon wolf struggled to its feet, took a blow from Henry Carter's staff rather than change targets, and turned to chase after Samuel Carter with all its might, clearly hating this chubby boy the most.

William Carter fired three stones in quick succession, each one drawing blood from the demon wolf’s brow, but it still refused to change targets. He couldn’t help but think to himself, “I’ve ambushed it with quite a few stones myself, but I don’t know how Samuel Carter, this chubby boy, managed to make the wolf hate him so much that it’s fixated on him.”

Seeing the demon wolf charging closer, William Carter dropped his animal skin pouch, grabbed his spear, and shouted, “Samuel Carter, fall back! Let Emily Thompson and me handle this!”

Among the The Carter Brothers, Henry Carter was skilled in martial arts, Edward Carter knew a few spells, and Samuel Carter often came up with unexpected tricks that sometimes worked surprisingly well. But at this moment, he couldn’t be relied on to hold off the demon wolf, because Samuel Carter didn’t know martial arts.

William Carter leveled the spear he had crafted himself and thrust it forward with all his might, using the opening move of the Yue Family Spear—“Breaking the Barbarian Horde.” Though it was just a simple thrust to the chest, this move required precise footwork, posture, and hand strength, gathering all the body’s power into a single explosive strike. On the battlefield, it was the most practical move. David Miller had once used this technique to kill eight Jin soldiers in the battle at Xiaoshang River, and still spoke of it with pride as his greatest achievement.

Emily Thompson's swordsmanship was even better than David Miller's. Although limited by her strength and unable to fight the demon wolf head-on like David Miller and Henry Carter, she used hit-and-run tactics. With her short sword leading the way, she coordinated with William Carter, striking at the demon wolf’s flank. Despite her small size, her swordsmanship was fierce and ruthless.

Facing attacks from both sides, the demon wolf didn’t dodge or evade. It swatted away Emily Thompson's short sword with its paw, then turned and bit down on the spear thrust by William Carter.

William Carter had used too much force, and the spear shaft, made of ordinary wood, snapped with a crack in the demon wolf’s jaws. But he was just as fierce—this move allowed no retreat, only advance. He drove the broken spear forward, stabbing it hard into the demon wolf’s shoulder.

Wounded, the demon wolf became even more ferocious. With a swipe of its paw, it sent him flying. If he hadn’t managed to raise half the broken spear to block in time, half his body would have been torn open by the wolf’s claws. Even so, his arm was left bleeding profusely.

“So this demon wolf was targeting me all along!”

William Carter caught a glimpse of the demon wolf’s emerald green, glowing eyes, flickering like fireflies, and suddenly realized the truth, cursing the cunning beast in his heart.

The demon wolf was now right in front of him, wounded and at its most dangerous. Even with others around, William Carter still had to face this vicious beast alone. He didn’t have Henry Carter's martial prowess, and with only three life-saving spear moves, he was helpless without a proper weapon.

At this critical moment, William Carter suddenly calmed down. The whole world seemed to fall silent. In his eyes, the demon wolf’s ferocious jaws and its eyes burning with rage and killing intent became especially clear, and he distinctly noticed a slight hesitation in the wolf’s left forepaw.

Almost without thinking, William Carter lunged forward, grabbing the demon wolf’s left forepaw. Using an over-the-shoulder throw he’d learned in school gym class, he twisted his waist and hips with explosive force, spinning his body like a whirlwind and hurling the demon wolf forward. Although his form was awkward and nothing like a true martial artist, the timing was perfect.

Emily Thompson had been waiting nearby. Seeing such a great opportunity, the little girl leapt up, reversed her grip on her short sword, and drove it down from above, pinning the demon wolf firmly to the ground. Henry Carter was only half a beat behind, rushing in to help. He shouted, “Emily Thompson, get back!” and swung his purple birch staff with a sound like thunder. Emily Thompson leaned back lightly, and Henry Carter's staff swept past her, smashing down hard on the demon wolf’s head.
