At midnight, a chilling wind blew, and the long grass grew thick. As soon as the six of them stepped out of the flag formation’s range, they saw two faint, ghostly green lights drifting in the distance. Emily Thompson frowned slightly and said, “So this lone wolf has been following us for a long time. No wonder the flag formation couldn’t fool it!”
William Carter saw that this demon wolf, standing casually on all fours, was already taller than an ordinary person on Earth. From head to tail, its fur was sleek and shiny, and its powerful muscles bulged beneath its pelt, exuding a sense of strength and beauty.
Samuel Carter gasped, muttering to himself, “What a huge demon wolf! It must be the wolf king of the grasslands!”
David Miller narrowed his eyes slightly and said in a low voice, “Henry Carter and I will block it. William, support from the rear. Emily Thompson, don’t act yet—wait for it to show an opening, then deliver a fatal blow. Samuel Carter, Edward Carter, you two adapt as needed…”
William Carter responded, and two pebbles appeared in his hands. With a flick of his wrists, he hurled them. As he threw the stones, he used a clever technique: though one stone followed the other, their speeds differed, and their angles were slightly askew, so they collided right in front of the demon wolf’s eyes.
With a sharp crack, the two stones exploded almost simultaneously, sending shards flying. Although the demon wolf was cunning, it hadn’t expected William Carter’s trick. It only managed to turn its massive head slightly, but couldn’t dodge completely—a shard struck one of its eyes, and blood gushed out.
“Too bad I only blinded one eye!”
William Carter had put in countless hours to master this twin-stone collision move, and it paid off handsomely on his first try. But before he could finish speaking, a dim yellow light appeared on the back of the demon wolf’s neck. A complex totem character glowed beneath its fur, sending a stream of light into the blinded eye. The demon wolf blinked several times, and under everyone’s gaze, the green glow returned to its eyes.
“This is a demon wolf that has gained sentience—everyone, be extremely careful!”
No one needed to remind him; William Carter already knew their luck was terrible tonight. Without hesitation, he hurled stones in rapid succession, but the yellow totem on the demon wolf’s neck flashed, and a surge of demonic power blocked every stone. Even when William Carter used his stone-exploding technique, he couldn’t injure it at all.
Seeing this, David Miller shook his iron spear and charged forward. Henry Carter also readied his purple birch staff, moving with such force that he seemed even more imposing than David Miller, like a silent, ferocious beast.
Henry Carter was a skilled fighter with astonishing strength, one of the top warriors in Xici Town. Even though the demon wolf was massive and intimidating, Henry Carter struck its shoulder with his staff, forcing it back several steps. William Carter marveled inwardly, “No wonder he once fought a demon wolf barehanded—his strength is incredible! This demon wolf is so huge, it must weigh three or four thousand kilograms.”
Chapter 11: Also Named Wu, Also Second in Line
David Miller’s spear skills were well known to him. While it would take some effort to kill an ordinary demon wolf one-on-one, he could definitely do it. Henry Carter’s skills surpassed even David Miller’s; his purple birch staff moved like a soaring dragon, its sudden strikes unpredictable and marvelous. Even if surrounded by a dozen demon wolves, he could beat them all to death.
Such fierce warriors were rare even on the Xici grasslands, but this demon wolf was unusually formidable, making William Carter sweat with anxiety. Charles Carter’s strength and staff techniques were unmatched—no matter that this giant wolf was bigger than a camel, a sweep of his staff would send it stumbling back several steps. David Miller’s spear had been honed on countless battlefields; though his momentum wasn’t as overwhelming as Henry Carter’s, every thrust struck a vital spot, and a casual slash would draw a spray of blood. The two of them wounded the demon wolf several times, but whenever the yellow totem on its neck flashed, its injuries would heal instantly, as if nothing had happened.
An enemy that couldn’t be killed no matter how hard you fought was the most troublesome. William Carter used his stone-throwing technique from the rear to distract the wolf and cover his companions. He fired several colorful stones, but they only seemed to tickle the demon wolf. The stone-exploding technique caused some damage, but after just a short while, his supply of ordinary stones was nearly depleted.
“What should we do? Can it be that the six of us can’t handle a single demon wolf?”
William Carter’s mind raced, coming up with seven or eight plans in an instant. None were certain to succeed, but he knew that if they didn’t try, there would be no hope at all. As long as they tried, there was always a chance.
“Emily Thompson, grab this rope. If I fail, make sure to pull me back!”
Before William Carter could shout out his plan, Samuel Carter was already in action. The chubby youth tossed a long rope to Emily Thompson, the other end tied to his own calf, and threw a strange vine ring onto the ground. He leapt into the vine ring with all his might, and the ground inside seemed to turn into a giant spring, launching Samuel Carter’s plump body high into the air.
