Chapter 17

With a loud bang, ten thousand peach blossoms seemed to bloom as the club smashed down. Even though the skull of this demon wolf was incredibly tough, this burly man still shattered its crown with a single blow. The demon wolf’s head was crushed and it died instantly; no matter how mystical its demonic energy was, there was no way the wound could heal this time. Henry Carter lifted his club and stood tall, looking truly imposing, which reminded William Carter of another hero with the same surname and the same “second” in his name.

“Give him a tiger, and I bet Henry Carter would kill it just the same!”

Chapter Twelve: Healing Wolf Pelt

After this fierce battle, everyone was still shaken, but William Carter was by no means the one in the worst shape. Samuel Carter had been pounced on by the demon wolf, which scared him so much he trembled all over and even shed tears. Still, he was tough enough not to retreat a single step, and was ready to fight to the death.

William Carter picked up his broken spear from the demon wolf mountain and couldn’t help but smile wryly. “My luck is really terrible. Looks like I really need to save up some money to buy a good weapon.” That last move, breaking through the barbarian, had used so much force that not only did the spear shaft snap, but even the short sword tied to the wooden stick as a spearhead had chipped, leaving a bean-sized notch. It pained him greatly.

David Miller patted William Carter on the shoulder and comforted him, “This demon wolf we hunted will definitely fetch a good price. If I sell a few of the good things I’ve saved up, buying an iron spear shouldn’t be a problem.”

William Carter just smiled and let it go. He knew that in Xici Town, the pelts, teeth, and bones of wild beasts didn’t sell for much. Although this demon wolf was fierce, its pelt was only a bit more luxurious after death. On Earth, wolf pelts weren’t considered high-quality, and in Fengzhou, they were even less valuable.

David Miller and Edward Carter quickly skinned the demon wolf, but no matter what they did, they couldn’t get the pelt off the head and neck, so they only managed to get most of a damaged hide.

Everyone had been eating, and with this prey, of course they wouldn’t let it go to waste. Since the pelt couldn’t be fully removed, they built a fire and threw the demon wolf in. After roasting for half an hour, the fire was filled with a delicious aroma. Everyone feasted on wolf meat and then went off to rest.

William Carter was on night watch, making sure the campfire didn’t go out. After the others fell asleep, he added wood a few times and happened to notice a faint yellow glow flickering in the fire. He poked at it and a piece of earth-yellow pelt turned over—it was the one with the totem.

“This thing isn’t even damaged by fire. How strange.”

William Carter turned it over and over, but couldn’t figure out its secret, so he simply tucked the wolf pelt into his clothes. That night, everyone slept soundly, except William Carter, who was left with more on his mind.

“I was the one who called everyone out to hunt the demon wolf, but in the end, we got nothing, and I even lost the short sword Uncle Li gave me… It’s so frustrating.”

William Carter threw away the wooden stick tied to the short sword, but still kept the short sword with him. Standing watch was a boring task, and not wanting to waste time, he silently began practicing the method for cultivating immortal power. He had spent the least time in Fengzhou, so he never wasted a moment. Every night before bed, he would quietly circulate his immortal power. Although the effect wasn’t great, for William Carter, every little bit added up and was better than wasting time.

Every time his immortal power circulated to his chest, William Carter would inexplicably feel a warmth, and his power would increase slightly. At first, he didn’t think much of it, but soon he found it odd.

“Why is my training so effective tonight?”

He reached to touch his chest and felt the pelt he’d gotten from the demon wolf. William Carter couldn’t help but take out the palm-sized wolf pelt, and immediately found that his immortal power didn’t flow as smoothly as before.

“So it’s the effect of this pelt—it can actually boost immortal power. No wonder that demon wolf could recover its strength and heal wounds whenever the yellow light flashed.”

There was a strange totem on the pelt. It looked like a character, but it was made of a single, winding stroke forming a particularly complex pattern. William Carter stared at it for a long time but couldn’t figure out its mystery. Still, his mind kept dwelling on the pattern, and somehow his immortal power followed the lines of the totem for half a circle, and William Carter immediately felt a faint, cool sensation.

“Could this totem actually be a route for immortal power to flow?”

William Carter was someone who dared to try things. Whenever he had an idea, he acted on it immediately. He steadied his breathing and let his immortal power circulate along the route of the totem on the wolf pelt. Aside from feeling a chill all over, he didn’t notice anything different from usual. Feeling puzzled, he picked up the pelt and examined it again and again. Suddenly, a thought struck him, and he tried circulating his immortal power in the opposite direction.

This time, the effect was dramatic. Suddenly, a wave of warmth surged from his chest and abdomen, quickly spreading through his limbs, making him feel indescribably comfortable all over. The immortal power that had nearly been exhausted in the fight with the demon wolf was now half restored.

  “This thing really works!”

William Carter was overjoyed and repeatedly circulated his immortal power along the route he’d discovered. Suddenly, his arm felt itchy. He scratched it a couple of times, then was shocked to find that the wound on his arm, scraped during the fight, had vanished without a trace—not even a scar remained.

“Is this actually a healing technique?”
