Chapter 7

The previous assessment was completely correct—Olivia Foster hadn’t yet noticed Edward Clark’s pair of dusty, slightly frayed leather shoes. Otherwise, she would have kicked Edward Clark out long ago, and it would have been game over for him. But on this last point, she actually wronged Edward Clark; it wasn’t that he didn’t dare to hand in his materials, but rather that he realized there was a misunderstanding and wanted to take them back. He had never thought about selling anything else—what, the Joy Century Light Sensor? Such an old-fashioned name. Isn’t that the same as what he used to sell?

His ideal position was actually as a security guard—not because he was particularly skilled and could take on eight people at once, but because he longed for that kind of life: standing at the company gate when there was something to do, wandering around idly when there wasn’t. It was truly the best job for slacking off. Besides, the salary for security guards wasn’t low—usually eight hundred, with meals and accommodation included. Thinking of this, Edward Clark smiled so much his eyes turned into slits. Unfortunately, there were no companies hiring for that position at today’s job fair!

But since a beautiful woman was giving him face, he had to play along, so Edward Clark began this inexplicable job interview!

For the English introduction, Edward Clark coughed, thought seriously for a moment, and finally squeezed out a sentence: “what’s your name?”

Olivia Foster was drinking a glass of water, halfway through, when she sprayed it out, covering Edward Clark’s head and face. Edward Clark didn’t mind, but asked in confusion, “Wasn’t that English?”

His brain short-circuited for a moment. Edward Clark seemed to remember he could speak many foreign languages—was it German, French? But this thought flashed by in an instant. He shook his head hard, clearing away the silly idea.

Olivia Foster felt a bit guilty and quickly found some tissues to hand to Edward Clark. “Sorry, sorry.”

Edward Clark wasn’t as nervous as she was. He took the tissues, wiped his face, and continued, “I, I, I…”

“All right, all right, your self-introduction can stop here.” Olivia Foster had to interrupt Edward Clark’s so-called English introduction. She was really afraid he’d suddenly blurt out, “I, LOVE, YOU!” In that case, she’d really have to find a mouse hole to crawl into.

But having just sprayed someone in the face, Olivia Foster felt it was awkward to immediately say, “Sir, you don’t meet our company’s standards, but thank you for coming.” So she thought for a moment and said, “Mr. Clark, do you know how to use a computer?”

As soon as she said this, she regretted it. Judging by Edward Clark’s demeanor, even if he could use a computer, it would probably just be to play games, Minesweeper, or Solitaire. But Edward Clark’s answer was quite unique: “Does turning it on and off count as knowing how to use a computer?”

Olivia Foster nodded, holding back a laugh, and said seriously, “Of course it counts!” She thought for a moment, then continued, “I wonder if Mr. Clark has any sales experience?”

“I did it for two months,” Edward Clark replied quickly, though he knew this was a dying struggle. With his performance, if he actually got hired, it would be unfortunate for both the company and himself.

“Which field mainly?” Olivia Foster was very patient. Since no one else was applying, she might as well pass the time.

“Seems similar to this.” Edward Clark pointed to the company’s promotional poster behind Olivia Foster.

“Which company was that?” Olivia Foster asked the final question. If someone worked in sales for two months and didn’t even know the company’s products, it would be outrageous if they weren’t fired.

“Pioneer, I think?” Edward Clark said slowly.

“All right.” Olivia Foster put down the materials and smiled at Edward Clark. “Mr. Clark, we have a general understanding of your situation. If you’re interested, please leave a copy of your materials here.” Seeing Edward Clark’s indifferent attitude, Olivia Foster didn’t return the paper to him. “If we think you meet our company’s requirements, I’ll contact you as soon as possible. Thank you for coming to interview at Pioneer Electronics Co., Ltd.!”

That last sentence made Edward Clark pause. Looking closely, he realized this company was called Pioneer. Thinking further, he remembered his own company was called Pioneerer. Edward Clark couldn’t help but laugh. Just now he’d said he worked in sales at Pioneer for two months—if this beautiful manager didn’t slap him, it was truly remarkable.

He originally wanted to rest a bit longer; going out for lunch this early seemed inappropriate. But seeing the beauty’s almost murderous glare, Edward Clark finally stood up. “All right, then, I’ll await good news from your company.”

Watching Edward Clark’s swaying figure, Olivia Foster almost tore the application paper into eighteen pieces, crumpled it up, and burned it. But after a moment’s thought, she sighed, retrieved the paper, and casually placed it in the middle of a stack of application materials.

Section Five: It’s Always You

Edward Clark made five copies of his materials and finally handed out one. However, he still hadn’t found his ideal security guard position, so he couldn’t help but feel a bit down. But that didn’t mean he was completely useless. With no other positions available, at least two insurance companies were still very enthusiastic, greeting him proactively, inviting Edward Clark to sit down, and asking all sorts of questions, including whether he was interested in visiting their company.
