Chapter 10

Edward Clark quickly shut the door, suddenly picked up his luggage, and said, "Sorry, I won't rent it." As he reached out, he only regretted giving the money too quickly and wanted to flee in panic, but he couldn't just give up that thousand yuan. If he generously gave it away, he'd have to sleep on the street for the next two months. The girl grew suspicious, "Why? What did you see? Julia, come out quickly."

A girl rushed out in a flurry, her pink top just thrown on, a bit disheveled but not flustered or angry. Instead, she beamed as she grabbed Edward Clark's luggage, " Edward Clark, it's you?"

Julia Cooper was truly surprised. During her lunch break, she had even gone to the job market, hoping to see Edward Clark. His phone was always unreachable when she called. Of course, she didn't know Edward Clark had lost that number and gotten a new one. After coming back, she had been in low spirits, thinking she'd never see Edward Clark again. She never expected Edward Clark would show up at her door—how could she not be happy!

"Where have you been? I couldn't reach you by phone. I thought you'd been trafficked to Africa! And why are you still holding your luggage? Put it down." As Julia Cooper spoke, she even reached out to help Edward Clark with his luggage. The girl beside them widened her eyes in confusion, " Julia, you know him?"

"Oh right, I forgot to introduce you. This is Sarah Baker, my college classmate and best friend." Julia Cooper laughed, sweeping away the gloom of the past few days. "This is Edward Clark, 'Ye' as in maple leaf, 'Feng' as in maple leaf!"

"Um, well..." Edward Clark hesitated for a while. "I'm actually pretty picky about renting. Is there a bed in the room? I can't do without a bed, I'm not used to sleeping on the floor."

Julia Cooper shot him a look, seeing right through his little trick. "How can you sleep without a bed? If there's no bed, you can sleep in mine." Seeing Sarah Baker's eyes nearly pop out, Julia Cooper laughed, "I'll sleep on the floor over there."

Edward Clark swallowed hard, forcing back the other excuses he was about to make. He had wanted to ask if there was a wardrobe—no wardrobe, no deal; or a TV—no TV, no deal. But if Julia Cooper ended up giving him her whole room, that would be a real problem.

"Actually, when you first recommended this place to me, I already wanted to move in." Edward Clark finally smiled. It's just two months—was it really necessary to avoid Julia Cooper like she was the plague? Besides, even if she was the plague, Julia Cooper was a beautiful one.

"Then why didn't you contact me?" Julia Cooper pressed.

Sarah Baker glanced at the two of them, half suspecting Edward Clark was playing the role of a heartless lover, and quickly said, "Since you two know each other, that's even better. Julia, you take care of him. I'm going to do a face mask. The money's with you—Edward Clark already paid the rent."

Once Sarah Baker left, Edward Clark returned to his usual self. "Of course I wanted to contact you, but—oh right, my phone fell into the toilet, which short-circuited the SIM card. I got a new card, and all my contacts were lost. I really miss the Pioneer—no, the Trailblazer group of friends. Anyway, now that I've seen you, you have to help me re-enter my contacts later."

"Phone got wet? I think it's your brain that's waterlogged." Julia Cooper said, half annoyed, half amused, ignoring all of Edward Clark's ridiculous excuses, and held out her delicate hand to him.

The two stood quite close, almost able to hear each other's breathing. Edward Clark grew flustered, clearly not good at handling such situations. "I've already paid the rent," he said, pointing to Julia Cooper's hand. "This—one thousand yuan."

"What rent? I'm asking about your phone." Julia Cooper slapped his hand. "Didn't you say you wanted me to help you with your contacts?"

"Well, no rush, no rush," Edward Clark said hurriedly, finally taking out his phone under her gaze.

"I'm not in a hurry, but I'm afraid that little girl Diana Harris is. She's the one you're worried about, right?" Julia Cooper asked, her tone indifferent.

"Uh, I don't care about her," Edward Clark quickly clarified.

"Then who do you care about?" Julia Cooper pressed.

Edward Clark nearly coughed his throat raw before finally squeezing out, "I miss Mr. Brooks more!"

Julia Cooper laughed so hard she almost couldn't straighten up, finally taking the phone and leading him to see the room.

The room was clean and tidy, with a bed but no bedding, a wardrobe and a desk—basically, just bring some clothes and you could move in. Edward Clark leaned his luggage against the bed, sat down slowly, and looked out the window. The lights across the way were bright, and the night view was decent.

"Wait a second," Julia Cooper suddenly remembered something and dashed out of the room, returning shortly with a blanket. "I really wonder how you used to live. Is this all your worldly possessions?"

She pointed at Edward Clark's suitcase, full of doubt.

"It's not that cold now. Just use my towel blanket for now."

Edward Clark gave a wry smile. "That's too much trouble. I'm fine like this—I'm used to it."

"Not satisfied, huh? If you don't like it, go to my room and pick something out." Julia Cooper's pretty face showed a hint of authority as she glared at Edward Clark. "Edward Clark, stop making so many excuses. If you really don't want to live here, I won't stop you."
