Chapter 13

“It’s not a drying device, it’s infrared, infrared…” Edward Clark hesitated a bit. He had been at Pioneer for two months, spending his time either sleeping or daydreaming. He couldn’t even remember the product names, let alone their functions.

“It’s the Xishiji Light Sensor.” Olivia Foster finally couldn’t hold back and walked over. A three-million order was no small sum. For a startup company, reaching that figure in a year would already mean profit—let alone when the client was David Bolton!

“And this young lady is?” David Bolton wore a broad smile, but his eyes already revealed a shrewdness rarely seen even among businessmen.

“My name is Olivia Foster, general manager of Pioneer.” Olivia Foster handed over a business card with calm confidence. “May I ask, Mr. Bolton, could you leave a card as well?”

She was still a bit suspicious of this man’s identity. More precisely, she wondered how David Bolton could be connected to someone as seemingly useless as Edward Clark. She wanted to verify his identity. But although this chubby man seemed easygoing, in Olivia Foster’s eyes, his entire outfit must have cost at least a million!

“Business card?” David Bolton muttered, “Edward Clark, is this your boss? Did you leave your old company because the boss wasn’t as fat as me, or because the ladies there weren’t as pretty as this one?”

He pulled out a business card and handed it to Olivia Foster. He took Olivia Foster’s card without even glancing at it. Judging by his manner, he was about to toss it straight into the trash, but after glancing at Edward Clark, he instead smiled and slipped it into his pocket.

Olivia Foster’s sharp eyes caught his little move, making her even more puzzled. As the boss of a small company, she clearly wasn’t taken seriously by David Bolton. So he was only here for Edward Clark’s sake? But how could that be?

But as soon as she saw the card, Olivia Foster gasped. Sure enough, this was David Bolton. Compared to his card, hers was less than worthless—no wonder he wanted to throw it away. Each of David Bolton’s business cards cost a thousand US dollars to make, custom-ordered from Switzerland, almost as sophisticated as a microcomputer. Only a hundred were ever made, and he already thought that was too many—not because of the cost, but because he didn’t think there were that many people worth giving one to!

Of course, that didn’t mean he lacked business partners. It was just that his cards were highly collectible; many wealthy people and officials considered it an honor to receive one, while he didn’t even give them a second glance. For him to give her one was an enormous favor.

David Bolton—the name sounded rustic, but in business circles, he was already a legend. His business spanned the globe. Rumor had it he started from scratch at eighteen, making his first million dollars from a waste paper deal. By thirty-six, his assets had multiplied 360 times. Now, in his early forties, no one could even estimate his wealth.

Yet such a man, who did business in everything, had come here to act like brothers with a useless kid, and was buying something for three million—something he didn’t even know the name of?

Edward Clark glanced at David Bolton and finally smiled. Olivia Foster was taken aback again. With his wide-rimmed glasses, Edward Clark looked a bit dull—in fact, to put it bluntly, a bit foolish. But when he smiled, there was an indescribable charm. That expression on his face was a striking contrast!

“You do seem a bit fatter than Mr. Brooks. Back then, I told Mr. Brooks I’d gotten in touch with David Bolton, and that you wanted to buy twenty million worth of equipment. But he said I was messing with him.” Edward Clark smiled. “Then I said I hadn’t made a single order in two months, and he actually praised me for being honest. But last time you said you wanted to buy twenty million—how come it’s only three million now?”

Edward Clark spoke in a calm, flat tone, as if he didn’t take David Bolton seriously, or perhaps didn’t even know who he really was.

David Bolton burst out laughing and gave Edward Clark a hearty slap on the shoulder!

Olivia Foster was secretly shocked. She had never met David Bolton, but she knew his quirks: the more polite he was to you, the closer you were to disaster. On the contrary, the more he joked with you, the more it meant you were his friend. Being friends with David Bolton was something Olivia Foster had never even dreamed of.

“With this company’s scale and production capacity,” David Bolton stopped laughing and spoke coolly. At this moment, he finally looked like a true businessman. “A three-million order will take at least two weeks to fill. Add in inspection, shipping, and all the odds and ends, and it’ll be about twenty days. If I gave you a twenty-million order, I’d have to wait until next year to get my goods—or the pressure would be too much, your company might collapse. Besides, you’ve got all the time in the world to chase girls, but where would I find that much time?”

Olivia Foster knew he was looking down on her company, but she had to admire his business sense, because he was right—you can’t eat a fat man in one bite. Even if a ten-million order landed on Pioneer, they might not be able to handle it. “Alright then, Boss Bolton, it’s a deal—twenty days. What about the payment terms?”
