William Thompson didn’t communicate very well with Travis Sullivan, but he didn’t really care. Saving this person was just something he did in passing; he never expected any reward. Coming to visit again was purely to fulfill his promise to the Jingjiao instructor.
Next, he was about to start his great new job—librarian!
Once you’re in this academy, the coursework isn’t so rigid anymore. If you want to attend classes, you can; if not, as long as you pass the big exam at the end of the year, you can smoothly move into the inner dorms.
He spent two days figuring out what the job of “library inspector” actually entailed.
Just as he expected, it really was library management, and the working hours were during class time—not only students came to the library, but instructors as well. When classes ended, the librarian was off duty.
This job was quite challenging, taking up all the class time. Students with weaker grades really didn’t dare take it on.
And the stipend wasn’t high either—twenty coins a day, only two silver coins for a hundred days. But in this academy, if you didn’t have an income of at least eighty coins a day, you could forget about it.
The work-study program at the Pure Quarters paid fifteen coins a day, and most importantly, it didn’t interfere with your studies.
However, William Thompson still decided to take this job—he wanted to observe the female cultivators coming and going.
When Ethan Shaw heard he’d found such a gig, his eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. “Damn, are you serious? Old Fourth, you really have some wild connections.”
The best thing about being a library inspector was the unlimited access to books—a lot of people would rather not make money if it meant getting this position.
“Library inspection is really busy, busier than those manual jobs at the Pure Quarters,” William Thompson replied coolly. “Don’t get too excited… at any moment someone might need you to work, so you never have a full stretch of time to read.”
“If no one comes, you could read all day,” Ethan Shaw said, always taking things to the extreme—just like his weight.
“What would I do with all those books?” William Thompson shot him a look. “I’m an observer in the Immortal Realm, I don’t need to read a bunch of useless books, you get that… the Immortal Realm, man.”
“Then why are you doing library inspection?” The pretty boy pounded his chest in frustration. “Give the job to me instead.”
William Thompson gave him a sidelong glance and answered honestly, “I’m there to watch the female cultivators. Always hanging around the entrance to the women’s dorm… it’s awkward!”
He was telling the truth. The librarian position did get his blood pumping a bit, but at its core, it was just a tribute to his past life. As for the books in the library… well, better than nothing.
The most annoying thing was the stipend—only twenty coins a day, what the heck is that? This is a high-IQ manual job, the exploitation is brutal, almost on par with online writers back on Earth.
“To watch the female cultivators?” The pretty boy’s eyes lit up, and he couldn’t help but give a big thumbs-up. “Old Fourth, to be this pervy, Second Brother has to say… I’m impressed!”
“You don’t know shit!” William Thompson snorted, but couldn’t be bothered to say more.
“Let’s go together,” Ethan Shaw said cheerfully, not at all offended by his words. “Perfect, since you’re not going to the women’s dorm, I’ve got nowhere else to be.”
This guy really was thick-skinned, and actually followed William Thompson to the library.
But William Thompson didn’t mind. In fact, he knew very well that the pretty boy was all talk—this chubby guy had a wild imagination and said outrageous things, but in real life, he was a total slacker when it came to action.
When it came time to hand over the job, there was a bit of trouble. There was already another student receiving the volunteer stipend at the library, so with William Thompson, that made two.
The other was a girl. When she heard there was a new volunteer, she didn’t even bother to look up. “We’re all volunteers, just do your own thing. Why are you looking for me, Susan Marshall?”
“Senior Marshall, I just wanted to discuss the work schedule with you,” William Thompson replied with a smile. “Now that it’s just the two of us doing library inspection, we should figure out who works on odd and even days.”
Senior Marshall didn’t even look up. “Since it’s just the two of us, and you want to split the days, are you trying to take advantage of me, an upper dorm student?”
Damn, is it even possible to have a pleasant conversation here? William Thompson thought for a long time but couldn’t figure out how he was supposedly taking advantage of her, so he just gave an awkward smile. “So Senior Marshall is from the upper dorm… my apologies. Alternating odd and even days, what’s wrong with that?”
Two people sharing a job, alternating days based on the date—what’s wrong with that?
Only then did Senior Marshall finally look up and speak coolly, “Upper dorm students have external training tasks, did you know that?”
“I know,” William Thompson nodded slightly, but his heart sank. Looks like this was going to get complicated.
“If you know, why are you asking?” Senior Marshall glared at him.
“Your external training has nothing to do with me,” William Thompson laughed. In truth, he was a bit annoyed.
On the Xuanqing plane, all the academies, big and small, emphasized practical ability. Not to mention upper dorm students at this academy—even when William Thompson was at the high academy, he’d done external training tasks—in other words, internships.
“If I go do external training, doesn’t that leave you here alone?” Senior Marshall replied irritably. “So, when I’m here, just stay out of my way!”
