Chapter 16

Ethan Brooks stared coldly at Emma Foster, sighing inwardly. Only women who think of themselves as princesses would have such a sense of superiority and self-importance. She never considers the consequences her actions might bring to others, only caring about her own sense of superiority.

Chapter 11: Complicated Shift Covering

Maybe in her eyes, after she treated him to a meal, it wasn’t that she owed Ethan Brooks a favor, but rather that he owed her instead. Ethan Brooks had no fondness at all for girls who were so self-satisfied.

“So you mean you feel you owe me a favor, so you want to treat me to a meal, right?” Ethan Brooks said blandly.

“Yes, yes, that’s right.” Emma Foster was glad that Ethan Brooks finally understood what she meant, and felt a sense of relief.

“How much are you planning to spend on this meal you’re treating me to?” Ethan Brooks’s question left Emma Foster a bit stunned.

“Uh… ah… I was thinking the two of us could eat at the school’s Ju Wei Lou, it should be around three hundred or so.” Although she didn’t understand why Ethan Brooks was asking this, Emma Foster still responded.

“Oh, do you have two hundred yuan in cash on you right now?” Ethan Brooks looked at Emma Foster, still expressionless.

Emma Foster snorted inwardly, thinking, what’s with the act? Acting cool, but in the end just wants to borrow money from me. Looks like that bouquet really was bought for someone else, and because I took his flowers, he’s acting like this. But she still took out two hundred yuan, thinking that since she’d already lent him money, maybe she didn’t need to treat him to dinner after all—she wasn’t expecting him to pay her back anyway.

“I figure a three-hundred-yuan meal, I’d probably eat about two-thirds, which is exactly two hundred yuan. Now that you’ve already given it to me, it means you’ve already treated me to dinner. Now we’re even, don’t bother me again.” Ethan Brooks put away the two hundred yuan and turned to leave.

“You…” Emma Foster took a while to react—she couldn’t believe there were people like this. She almost choked with anger. Who does he think he is? A useless person acting so arrogant—did he forget he’s a nobody?

……

What puzzled Ethan Brooks was that after eating at the school, he still hadn’t noticed anyone suspicious following him. He didn’t believe that Charles Reed would just let it go like this. Looks like this guy really can endure.

As soon as Ethan Brooks ran back to his place, he saw Yvonne Green anxiously pacing back and forth outside his door. He asked curiously, “Yvonne Green, what’s wrong? You look like an ant on a hot pan.”

“Ethan Brooks, you’re finally back! Can you help me with something? I really have an emergency today, but I also promised to cover Anna Lee’s shift tonight.” As soon as Yvonne Green saw Ethan Brooks, she came up to him excitedly.

“What can I help you with?” Ethan Brooks asked, a bit puzzled.

“It’s like this. I was supposed to cover Anna Lee’s shift today, but now I suddenly have an emergency. Can you help cover for me? It’s only a few hours, you’ll be off by midnight.” Yvonne Green said anxiously.

Ethan Brooks was speechless, a black line appearing on his forehead. “I’m unemployed, and you want me to cover your shift at the hospital? Are you still running a fever?”

“Didn’t you say you know a bit about medicine? Actually, even if you know nothing, you can still cover the shift. My job tonight is just fever screening. All you have to do is hand a thermometer to the patients and let them take their own temperature, then record it. If they have a fever, tell them to register. I’ll call Little Grace and have her teach you—it only takes a few minutes to learn.” Yvonne Green looked at Ethan Brooks expectantly after she finished.

Ethan Brooks looked at Yvonne Green speechlessly. It really was simple. Since Yvonne Green had treated him to a meal before, Ethan Brooks actually felt some goodwill toward her. After thinking for a moment, he said, “I can help you, but what if a supervisor comes to check and finds out?”

“Don’t worry, supervisors never check the screening desk. Even if they do, they only check the departments, and at night there’s absolutely no way a supervisor would come. Besides, you’ll be wearing a mask—who would know who you are?” Yvonne Green said confidently.

Ethan Brooks thought to himself, of course I’m not worried. Even if I get caught, I’m just a stand-in—if anyone gets punished, it won’t be me. What am I worried about?

Seeing Ethan Brooks agree, Yvonne Green handed him her badge, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and hurried off while making a phone call. Judging by the tension in her expression, Ethan Brooks knew she must have run into something tricky.

Just in case, Ethan Brooks brought his small medical kit with him. He hadn’t expected that the kit he’d prepared for his street stall would be used for the first time in a real hospital.

Maybe Yvonne Green had already called Little Grace, because as soon as Ethan Brooks arrived at the fever screening counter at Likang Hospital, Little Grace pulled down her mask, waved at him, and said, “You’re Ethan Brooks, right? Put on the white coat first. Let me explain—it’s really simple. Just record the temperatures and hand out the thermometers. I’ll handle everything else.”

Only then did Ethan Brooks realize how simple it really was. There weren’t many patients at night anyway. In fact, even if he hadn’t come, Little Grace could probably handle it all by herself.
