Chapter 20

“Grandpa, I heard that doctors are all like this nowadays—they don’t want to treat you if you don’t have money. Don’t be upset.” The girl named Sunny, feeling relieved now that her grandfather was out of danger, began to comfort him.

“How much do you need for the treatment?” The girl named Sunny wasn’t naive. Although she could tell that Ethan Brooks had some skills, he might also be exaggerating. Still, since he was the only one who could guarantee her grandfather’s recovery, she didn’t want to miss the chance.

“Two hundred thousand.” Ethan Brooks glanced at the girl’s clothes and estimated they alone were worth two hundred thousand, so he figured it should be easy for her to come up with that amount.

But the girl looked a bit frustrated. All her money added up to just fifty thousand, yet this guy was asking for two hundred thousand. Was it because he saw her clothes were expensive? But she hadn’t bought these clothes herself—she couldn’t afford them. They were a gift from her aunt.

“I only have fifty thousand. It’s all here, and the password is 880521.” With that, the girl took out her only card and handed it to Ethan Brooks.

Ethan Brooks took the card, glanced at the girl, and thought to himself how stingy she was. Just one of his heart-protecting pills was worth more than fifty thousand. But fifty thousand was fifty thousand—he didn’t really mind losing out on money. With this amount, he wouldn’t have to worry about money for a while.

He put the card away without further words, opened his case, took out a pitch-black pill, and handed it to the old man. “Take this heart-protecting pill first, and then I’ll do the acupuncture.”

“What kind of medicine is this? A heart-protecting pill? Why does it look so strange? Are you some kind of quack? This is Likang Hospital, you know.” The girl named Sunny quickly stopped Ethan Brooks’s hand, sounding worried.

“If you don’t want the treatment, I’ll return your card right now.” Ethan Brooks said, a bit displeased.

The old man looked at Ethan Brooks, waved his hand, and said, “Sunny, step aside. Give me the pill, I’ll take it.”

The old man took the pill and swallowed it without another word. He sighed inwardly—not that he was afraid of death, but if he could really live another three years, he could arrange many things calmly. Otherwise, if he died suddenly, the family might fall into chaos or even decline, which was not something he wanted to see.

So even though he was ninety percent sure Ethan Brooks was a fraud, as long as there was a ten percent chance, he had to try.

Seeing the old man take the pill, Ethan Brooks nodded, had him lie down, and began the acupuncture.

Sunny, who had been suspicious of Ethan Brooks, became even more doubtful when she saw the pitch-black pill. But when she saw Ethan Brooks’s swift acupuncture and her grandfather’s face starting to regain color, she began to feel hopeful again.

She had never seen acupuncture in person, but she had seen it on TV. Normal acupuncture by traditional Chinese doctors was nothing like Ethan Brooks’s fluid and seamless technique. This doctor’s hands moved so fast they were almost a blur, which was the main reason her confidence was restored.

By the end, her doubts about Ethan Brooks had completely vanished, because sweat was beading on his forehead.

Suddenly, the girl grew nervous again, because she saw a pained expression appear on the old man’s face. Just as she was about to ask, Ethan Brooks suddenly flipped the old man over and struck his back with his palm.

With a “pfft,” the old man spat out a mouthful of thick, black, sticky stuff.

Ethan Brooks breathed a sigh of relief and said to the girl, “Your grandfather is fine now. He’ll have no problems for the next three years. Have a nurse come in to clean up—I’m leaving.”

Without waiting for the girl to reply, he picked up his small medicine case and left. By the time the girl named Sunny reacted and ran after him, Ethan Brooks was already gone.

“Grandpa…” The girl named Sunny ran back to the emergency room, calling out anxiously. She suspected Ethan Brooks was the type to take the money and run, and might not even be from Likang Hospital. When she first came in, the nurse said he wasn’t Dr. Cui—she only remembered that now, but it was too late to catch him.

The old man had recovered, picked up a towel to wipe his mouth, and looked at the girl with a strange expression. “That doctor isn’t a fraud. I really do feel much lighter, not as burdened as before. I didn’t expect there to be such a miracle doctor. Later, go ask the nurse what his name is—we must get to know someone like that.”

Chapter Fourteen: No Such Person Found

Ethan Brooks returned to his place, but Yvonne Green hadn’t come back yet. Although he had covered a shift for her today, he’d also made tens of thousands of yuan, which was definitely something to celebrate for someone like Ethan Brooks, who was completely broke. But this kind of thing could only be done once or twice—if he did it too often, his identity might be exposed. Right now, he still couldn’t protect himself, so revealing his identity and abilities at this time was not wise. The world was probably far less safe than it appeared.

The next day, Yvonne Green came back, but Ethan Brooks noticed her eyes were red and swollen, as if something had happened. But since he and Yvonne Green were just ordinary acquaintances, he didn’t ask her about it.
