Grace Foster took it, set it up for a bit, then handed it back to William Bolton: “Just press this and it’ll start, but I bet you won’t even make it past the first level.”
Truly, such intricate design—mortal technology has advanced rapidly over the past thousand years.
When William Bolton pressed the start button, a plane appeared, slowly accelerated, and then headed into a void. Before long, a few enemies showed up and started shooting at him.
“Quick, dodge!” Grace Foster saw the bullets about to hit the plane and hurriedly called out, only to find William Bolton’s hand moved slightly, skillfully maneuvering the plane to narrowly avoid the danger.
“And you say I’m slow—your reflexes are just as sluggish!” Grace Foster muttered under her breath.
In the first level, there weren’t many attacks. Almost every time, the bullets just grazed past the plane. William Bolton’s face was calm and unruffled, while Grace Foster was the one sweating bullets every time.
“Just luck, that’s all,” Grace Foster hummed softly.
The attacks in the second level increased a bit, but William Bolton’s reactions remained the same. With gentle presses on the buttons, the seemingly doomed plane always managed to escape unscathed.
“You’ve played this before, haven’t you?” Grace Foster asked.
“No, I haven’t.” William Bolton shook his head.
“Liar. Third level—you’re dead for sure.” Grace Foster said with a grudge.
With each level cleared, more enemies would shoot at him, and the number of bullets to dodge increased. It was a gradual test of the player’s reflexes.
But Grace Foster found her hopes dashed. No matter how dense the bullets became, William Bolton always dodged them methodically, not even getting grazed once.
“Fourth level, you’re dead for sure.”
……
“Fifth level, you’re really dead for sure!”
……
“Sixth level, this time you’re really, really dead.”
……
“Ahem, it’s so hot today.” As William Bolton turned to look at her, Grace Foster coughed awkwardly. They were already at the eighth level—Grace Foster herself had lost at this very stage earlier.
The attacks in the eighth level were so dense it was overwhelming, but the plane controlled by William Bolton seemed to come alive, circling, sidestepping, swaying gently left and right. Grace Foster inadvertently glanced at William Bolton’s hands and saw his fingers dancing nimbly—steady and swift.
“Ah, quick, use invincibility! There’s no way to dodge through that area.” Grace Foster suddenly shouted.
William Bolton didn’t use the so-called invincibility. His fingers kept moving, and the plane shifted minutely from side to side. Three seconds later, the plane emerged from the hail of bullets completely unscathed.
“No way!” Grace Foster was dumbfounded. There were no cheats in this game, and she’d clearly seen the bullets hit the plane—how could it be fine?
Ten minutes later, William Bolton handed the PSP back to Grace Foster. On the screen, flowers filled the sky as the plane flew through them, and the congratulatory message for clearing the game appeared.
“You really haven’t played this before?” Grace Foster asked weakly.
“No, I haven’t.” William Bolton still shook his head.
“You have, haven’t you? You’re lying to me on purpose.” Grace Foster pressed on.
“All right, all right, I’ve played it. I’ve been playing this game since I was three.” William Bolton gave a wry smile.
“I knew it! It took me a month just to reach level eight, and you cleared the whole game in half an hour. Still, you’re amazing.” Grace Foster’s eyes sparkled with admiration.
In the days that followed, every time Grace Foster came by, she’d bring not only some homemade soup but also a new game to challenge William Bolton. But every time, William Bolton would clear it with ease, leaving the girl fuming in frustration.
Chapter 004 Severing Mortal Ties
A month passed quickly, and it was time for William Bolton to be discharged from the hospital.
The weather was beautiful that day. When William Bolton finished the paperwork and walked out of the hospital, he saw a stylish beauty in sunglasses leaning against the door of a red convertible sports car, smiling at him.
William Bolton grinned—it was that very sports car that had ended this body’s life and given him the chance to take over. Seeing it again now… damn, it felt almost nostalgic.
“Happy? I came to pick you up,” Grace Foster said with a smile.
“Not bad,” William Bolton nodded. He had a good impression of the first person he met after returning to the human world—especially since Grace Foster was a beauty.
“But as a lady, you really shouldn’t show your teeth when you smile,” William Bolton added.
Grace Foster quickly closed her mouth, rushed over, and stomped on William Bolton’s foot, puffing with anger: “If you weren’t just out of the hospital, I’d give you a real beating.”
“This is for you—make sure you stay safe from now on.” Grace Foster waved her hand, then took out a jade pendant and stuffed it into William Bolton’s hand. “I had a master bless it—it’s very effective.”
William Bolton snorted. Although the jade pendant did have some spiritual energy, it was far too weak. At his current level, he could easily do the same with a wave of his hand. Still, it was a kind gesture, so he simply accepted it and thanked her.
“Let’s go,” Grace Foster said as she opened the car door.
“Where to?” William Bolton was taken aback.
“I’m treating you to a meal. After that, I’ll take you to school.”
