Chapter 14

After much inner struggle, she ultimately decided to take the risk and come to the rescue. However, to her surprise, the person she was saving wasn’t scared half to death like a normal person would be, nor did he try to run away quickly—instead, he dawdled and was reluctant to leave. What a weirdo.

If it weren’t for his outstanding performance earlier, she wouldn’t even bother talking to him right now—she’d just knock him out and drag him away to avoid any trouble.

Once they entered the room, Logan Carter didn’t spare a single glance at the corpses. Sir Laplace was the parent of the body’s original owner, but not his own; in his mind, they were no different from strangers.

Walking to the bedside, Logan Carter pointed at the mural on the wooden bed and said, “Quick, go take down the painting.”

“Why?”

“Hurry up, there’s no time!” Logan Carter urged.

“Shut up!” the female hunter snapped, but still walked over to the bed.

She was tall, so with just a slight tiptoe she could reach the mural on the wall. With a bit of effort, she took down the heavy painting, only to discover a small cupboard hidden behind it. Inside the cupboard sat a very exquisite wooden box.

“Take the box, let’s go!” Logan Carter spoke again.

This time, the female hunter complied. She reached in and took out the wooden box, weighing it a bit and realizing it was surprisingly heavy. She asked, “Is there money inside?”

Logan Carter nodded. “Yes, mostly silver Lant, with a few gold Dragon coins and some jewels. The total value is about 3,000 Lant. I heard that hunters only take action if there’s a bounty. You saved me, so this is my reward for you.”

“Hiss~” The female hunter gasped. “I didn’t save you for the money! And this is way too much!”

A typical farmer’s family, with five working members, toiling away in the fields and selling all their crops, wouldn’t make more than 50 Lant a year. 3,000 Lant would require a farming family to work for 60 years without spending a penny! As for herself, risking her life to kill monsters, the most she could get for a mission was 100 Lant. After deducting food, equipment, potions, and other expenses, she basically had no money left over. It was clear just how huge a sum 3,000 Lant was.

“Enough talk, let’s go!” This time it was Logan Carter urging her.

Of course, he had his own reasons for giving away this money.

First, they needed money to escape. Second, it was to thank her for saving his life. Third, as a rich young master who couldn’t even truss a chicken, in such chaotic times, he desperately needed a protector—and this female hunter seemed like a great choice.

“Oh~ oh~ okay, I’m going.”

The female hunter was so stunned by the huge sum that she seemed a bit dazed. Hearing Logan Carter’s urging, she absentmindedly responded a few times, then walked blankly toward the balcony.

The balcony wasn’t high, only about three meters from the ground. The female hunter jumped straight down, but the impact made her cough up blood again.

Logan Carter was dumbfounded. “Hey~ are you trying to get yourself killed?”

“Oh~ oh~ sorry, I’ll be more careful.” The female hunter still hadn’t recovered from the shock of receiving such a fortune.

“...You’re the one who’s hurt, why are you apologizing to me?” Logan Carter was speechless.

He also climbed over the railing and carefully jumped down from the balcony. Below was a soft lawn, and at only three meters high, even an ordinary person could easily jump down with a bit of preparation.

Once they reached the backyard, the female hunter finally snapped out of it and started jogging. “Hurry, follow me.”

Logan Carter nodded and quickly followed.

At the backyard gate, the female hunter kicked the wooden door open. After running another twenty or so meters, they came upon a plane tree by the roadside, with a black horse tied to it.

The female hunter reached out and tossed Logan Carter onto the horse’s back, then mounted herself. With a flick of the whip, she shouted, “Lily, go!”

“Whinny~~ clop clop clop~”

The black horse, called Lily, neighed and stretched out its long legs, galloping madly down the weed-choked dirt road.

The black horse was truly fast. On its back, Logan Carter was jolted all over the place. Occasionally, when he looked back, he saw the scenery on both sides of the road flying by, and the Laplace family’s manor quickly shrank into a tiny black dot. Soon, even that dot disappeared.

“Where are we going?” The wind was so strong that Logan Carter had to shout.

“Holderburg!”

“Holderburg?” Logan Carter tried hard to recall, but found he couldn’t remember the name at all. But that was normal—the Hunter’s World was vast, and the game had only been open for three months. Even professional travel players would be impressive to have explored 5% of the map in detail.

“It’s my Hunter Academy. My mentor is there, along with many hunters and mages. High-level vampires are extremely vengeful. You tricked him, so he’ll definitely come after you for revenge. Only when we get there can we truly escape his pursuit!”

Her words sent a chill down Logan Carter’s spine, because he knew she was right. The vampire Viken was exactly the type to hold a grudge.

“But I can’t stay in the castle forever, right? We’ll have to leave the academy eventually.”

“Of course you won’t stay there forever. Once we get to the castle, the mages will help you remove the blood mark on you. That way, the vampire won’t be able to track you.”

“Blood mark?!” Logan Carter gasped. Right, there was the blood mark—how could he have forgotten about that?
