Chapter 13

Leaving Brian Carter completely baffled: “Are all the bugs in this world this badass?”

First, caterpillars can launch bombs, now woodlice can turn into bouncing balls, and then there’s this unknown millstone-sized giant snail—he felt like his entire worldview was being shattered.

He lifted another piece of snail shell, and sure enough, there were more woodlice underneath. Brian Carter had learned his lesson and conjured a transparent glass bowl to trap the woodlice. The next moment, the startled woodlice all curled up into balls, bouncing around inside the glass bowl like a lottery draw. Fortunately, the force wasn’t too great, and the bowl didn’t break.

After waiting for quite a while, the bouncing woodlice finally calmed down, stretched out again, and began crawling around inside the bowl.

“I’ll call you bouncing woodlice.” Brian Carter reached out with tweezers, grabbed one of the bouncing woodlice, and stuffed it into a glass test tube, catching ten in a row.

After putting away the test tubes and looking at the five he’d collected, he suddenly felt a bit dazed, as if he’d become a scientific researcher. This journey through another world felt just like a scientist collecting samples somewhere. Although there had been a few scares, overall the process was pleasant and relaxing.

He was full of anticipation for the species of this new world.

However, just as Brian Carter was humming a tune and heading toward the next patch of forest, at some point, the ground he walked on seemed to have something crawling beneath it, pushing up the soil. Soon, whatever it was caught up with the unsuspecting Brian Carter, and as he bent down to squat, it suddenly burst out from underground.

A tremendous force slammed into Brian Carter’s waist, and before he could react, he was violently flung into the air.

“Shit!” Brian Carter cried out in shock, unable to see what was behind him, arms and legs flailing in midair. Only after being tossed three or four times by the unknown creature did he manage to calm down a bit.

A rope shot out from each of his hands, wrapping tightly around a tree branch and anchoring his body in place.

The monster behind him pulled even harder, nearly deforming his nano battle armor. At this point, Brian Carter finally had a moment to twist his head and catch a glimpse out of the corner of his eye. It turned out to be a huge black snake—or rather, a giant worm—its long, slender body half-buried underground, the other half biting into him.

“Die!” Brian Carter let go with one hand, suddenly conjured a massive broadsword, and slashed it at the monster behind him.

He had painstakingly crafted this sword—it could slice through iron like mud and split a hair in midair. But when he struck, it felt like chopping into wood; the blade barely sank an inch before it stopped.

The monster’s skin was too thick.

But even so, the blow made the creature yelp in pain and abruptly release its bite, letting Brian Carter swing away on the ropes.

Flipping to the ground, Brian Carter finally got a good look at the monster: it was a gigantic worm, somewhat like the legendary Mongolian death worm from Earth.

It had no eyes, just a huge mouth full of razor-sharp teeth for a head, and four waving tentacles that seemed to be some kind of sensory organ.

“Die!” Brian Carter didn’t hesitate for a second. His broadsword instantly morphed into a submachine gun, and he pulled the trigger, spitting out tongues of flame.

Bullets poured out, pockmarking the death worm’s body with craters, but none were fatal. The death worm let out a terrifying roar, writhing but not retreating—instead, it charged again. Its mouth gaped open, and a jet of dark green fluid sprayed toward Brian Carter.

The liquid shot out so fast that Brian Carter had no time to block and was doused all over.

His titanium alloy nano battle armor melted away like snow in the sun, scaring Brian Carter into quickly dispersing the armor and fleeing for his life. Once he was clear of the liquid, he rapidly conjured a brand-new set of nano armor. He couldn’t help but inhale a few breaths of air during the process, but there was no time to worry about that.

The death worm burrowed underground again, and the bulging soil showed it was rapidly closing in on Brian Carter, clearly unwilling to let its prey escape.

“Metal can’t withstand its fluid—it must be some kind of acid. Time to switch to ceramic armor!” Brian Carter’s mind raced as he activated his backup plan.

Before coming to this world, he’d anticipated that metal armor might not be enough, so he’d designed several alternatives—ceramic armor was one of them.

“Here it comes!”

As the bulging soil snaked toward him, Brian Carter stayed on high alert. When the death worm burst from the ground, he quickly dodged behind a thick blue tree. In his hands, a flamethrower materialized, and he spun around, unleashing a jet of fire at the death worm.

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!

The flames roared, making the death worm howl and dive back underground.

The bulging soil moved closer and farther away, but the death worm didn’t retreat after two failed attacks—it was clearly preparing for another assault.

“Come on, let’s see which of us lives or dies!” Brian Carter gripped the flamethrower, watching the ground intently. Suddenly, the bulging soil vanished.

Before he could guess whether the death worm had stopped, he felt the ground tremble beneath his feet. Somehow, the death worm had silently tunneled right under him and launched an attack. Its massive jaws opened wide, spraying thick acid all over his ceramic armor.

But this time, the ceramic armor held strong.

However, Brian Carter realized that one of his legs had ended up inside the death worm’s mouth, its razor-sharp teeth biting into the ceramic armor and leaving deep cracks.
