Chapter 001 Five Years, Gone in a Flash

On a scorching summer day, Brian Carter sat blankly on a long bench, dressed in a gray prison uniform, his eyes lifeless. All around him were prisoners just like himself.

In front of the three rows of benches, a young man in a police uniform was waving a baton and barking orders. He was the head of the Education Department at the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre in Hong Kong.

There was no doubt about the situation: Lai Chi Kok was welcoming a new batch of inmates, and the department head was laying down the rules and establishing everyone's status.

As the head was spitting as he spoke, another shout came from outside—the warden had arrived.

The department head immediately switched to a subordinate's demeanor and respectfully welcomed the warden.

Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre may sound like just a "centre," but it is actually one of the most highly secured prison zones in all of Hong Kong, on par with Pik Uk Correctional Institution, Shek Pik Prison, and Stanley Prison.

After the warden arrived, there was another round of official speeches, but Brian Carter paid no attention to any of it. He was completely broken inside. How did a 21-year-old sophomore, born after 2000, end up in 1986 Hong Kong after just taking a nap in his dorm room??

His transmigration came without warning. He woke up in shorts and a T-shirt, and suddenly he was in Hong Kong. He vaguely heard a voice: "Multiverse Sign-In System bound. Sign-in successful. Reward: Cantonese fluency."

Brian Carter used to need subtitles to watch Cantonese movies, but now he could communicate in real life without any barriers.

But what use is Cantonese fluency to me? Still dazed in shorts and a big pair of boxers, he suddenly heard gunshots—it turned out someone nearby was robbing a gold shop.

Brian Carter had watched plenty of action movies, but a real-life shootout?

Confused and panicked, he hid by the street, watching the police surround the area and the robbers fight back. During the chaos, one robber was shot dead and collapsed right next to Brian Carter. As he fell, the robber tossed a gun into Brian Carter's arms, and Brian Carter instinctively threw it away.

After the other robbers escaped, the police locked down the area.

Without an ID card, the police who first caught him thought he was an illegal immigrant and planned to deport him to the mainland. While they were processing him, things took a turn for the worse—he was framed by a corrupt cop as an accomplice to the robbers.

The robbery was committed by the "Big Circle" gang. As an undocumented immigrant, he was labeled as one of them!

Brian Carter couldn't explain himself. Once he recovered from the shock, he realized that the police who failed to catch the real robbers were trying to pin the crime on him, an undocumented person, to claim credit.

But what could he do?

He was penniless, knew nothing about Hong Kong, and had no relatives or friends to turn to. He tried to apply for legal aid, but it was useless—he couldn't pay a cent, and the so-called legal aid was just going through the motions, not actually helping.

When he instinctively threw away the gun, he left fingerprints on the gunshot wound, but definitely not on the trigger.

The corrupt cops framed him as an accomplice who delivered the gun and acted as a lookout.

Brian Carter had no criminal record before, and he wasn't the main perpetrator in the armed robbery, so the sentence wasn't that severe.

The only thing he fought for was when he was sent to Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre. According to prison custom, the guards would have an Indian staff member "search the locker" for you. He told them to skip it, promising 50,000 in a month, and hinted that he had a boss outside—if they tried anything, his boss would kill them.

The Indian staff did the search with a police officer present, and Brian Carter told the same thing to the officer, so he was spared.

After all, on the surface, he was sent to prison for robbing a gold shop with the Big Circle gang.

Even now, he was still in a daze. He'd read plenty of novels and watched lots of movies before, but this was just too unlucky.

Transmigrated and immediately thrown in jail? And for something he didn't do.

When he saw the other prisoners around him suddenly stand up, he did so out of habit, and then several guards escorted him and others to different cells.

"52363, this cell is yours. You're still young—do your five years well, and you'll have a whole new life when you get out."

The guard brought Brian Carter to an eight-person cell, gave him a word of advice, and signaled him to go in.

Brian Carter looked up, and his dazed mood suddenly became... a little chaotic.

An eight-person cell, just like an eight-person dorm in college. Four bunk beds lined up against the wall, two desks, and what looked like a bathroom at the far end.

But at the moment, only five inmates inside were looking at Brian Carter.

Five faces—very familiar.

Short and chubby Eric Bennett? One Eric Bennett could be a coincidence, but with the other four, Brian Carter's mind froze a little—Teapot, Vaseline, the exhaust pipe, Curly, and Lanks?

Clutching his belongings in confusion, he stepped into the room. As the guard closed the door again, among the five men, Vaseline immediately walked over with a grin. "Kid, where are you from? You look pretty decent—almost as handsome as me. Never thought you'd be a thief too."
