Chapter 16

Big D spat out the herbal tea with a puff, looking at Ponytail in disbelief. “Are you serious? Are you messing with me? That bastard escaped from Lai Chi Kok, attacked the police and stole guns several times along the way, and now he’s sent to Stanley, but still manages to escape? Are all the guards at Stanley idiots?”

Ponytail shrugged. “He’s just that good. I’m actually curious how many days he can stay free this time.”

Big D’s hand froze in midair for several minutes before he looked up and sighed, “What a damn genius!”

Guys like them, mixed up in gangs, no matter how crazy they seemed, were always half a step away from the morgue, half a step from prison.

And now suddenly someone like Brian Carter pops up, making prison breaks seem like an everyday thing—damn, that’s wild.

Big D had a feeling that the name Brian Carter, Brother Brian, would soon be spreading all over the streets. Even if he was just a “big circle” guy, not tied to any particular gang or group… fame is fame!

While many people were talking about Brian Carter’s name, after Little Brian’s lunch break, he put on a prison guard’s uniform and walked out of his single cell, feeling refreshed.

He didn’t have any fancy way to hide the clothes—he just put the guard’s uniform over his prison outfit, switching identities, that’s all.

He walked quickly for a dozen meters, and as he passed a cell, a man inside immediately called out, “Sir, you look unfamiliar. Got a smoke?”

Brian Carter glanced at him and grinned. He’d thought before that with master-level makeup skills, he could turn Kevin Carter into a white guy, and now here was a bespectacled Kevin Carter squatting right here?

He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from his pocket, took one out and handed it over, smiling as he asked, “What’s your name? What crime are you in for? How long’s your sentence?”

He didn’t have any cigarettes himself—these came with the guard’s uniform he’d swiped, smokes and a lighter right in the pocket.

The man with glasses took the cigarette and lighter, lit up, took a satisfied drag, and joked, “Assaulting a police officer. Got nine months.”

Seeing Brian Carter’s expression didn’t change, he shrugged and added, “But later, I accidentally killed a head of the supervision department. Now I’m in for life. Everyone calls me Big Lawyer.”

Brian Carter’s face darkened, and he reached through the metal bars to give the guy a punch. “You’ve got guts, huh? Killed the head of the supervision department?”

“Ding, congratulations on successfully checking in with Matthew Brooks. Reward: double base brainpower. The host can claim it at any time.”

The system’s voice sounded, and Brian Carter was overjoyed again. Matthew Brooks, killed the head of the supervision department—that’s as hard as killing Killer Jack in prison! Now he remembered, wasn’t this the protagonist of “Black Jail Dirge: Life Sentence”?

The story of the life sentence is simple: Lawyer Brooks often helped people from the underworld with lawsuits. Once, he helped a punk named Red Kid win a case, and they went to a bar to celebrate. There, they ran into cops beating up Red Kid. Lawyer Brooks tried to intervene, got beaten by the police, couldn’t hold back and fought back—assaulting a police officer, sentenced to nine months.

Of course, that was back in the inspector era, when the cops were way tougher than now!

Then, while he was in prison, the head of the supervision department, Piranha, went to Lawyer Brooks’s house, lied to his sister saying he could take care of her brother in prison if she slept with him, kept scamming money from her, messed with his younger sister, and the sister committed suicide…

Who could stand that? Lawyer Brooks killed Piranha in prison and got his sentence changed to life.

Before he got the double brainpower reward from checking in with David Thompson, he might not have been able to recall all the movies and shows he’d seen so quickly. Now it was much easier.

Once he digested this reward, his brainpower would be even greater. Soon, he wouldn’t even need NZT to feel amazing.

Thinking about Matthew Brooks, this Big Lawyer… comparing Killer Jack to Piranha? Doesn’t Killer Jack suddenly seem like he’s got a lot more integrity?!

With that thought, Brian Carter tossed the whole pack of cigarettes to Matthew Brooks, smiling, “Not bad, I like you. Here, take them.”

He turned and walked away, leaving Matthew Brooks baffled by his reaction. What the hell?

Chapter 012: When the Tree Falls, the Monkeys Scatter

Leaving the cell where Matthew Brooks was, Brian Carter walked a few meters and opened a new empty single cell, took off the guard’s uniform, lay down on the bed, and chose to receive the brainpower boost reward.

If his brain could always be close to NZT-48 level, then even if he left Stanley today, he could start a much easier new life.

In theory, these rows of single cells would have guards patrolling from time to time, but right now, Stanley was extremely short-staffed—most of them were out hunting for him. Sleeping here all afternoon probably wouldn’t be a problem.

Brian Carter’s guess was right. By the time it was past six in the evening in the cell block, he was already wide awake, using triple brainpower to recall all sorts of knowledge, including anti-surveillance and tracking, all kinds of combat skills he’d learned, makeup techniques, and so on.

He still wasn’t quite at NZT-48 cheat mode, but at least he was halfway there.

“Before, without cheats, I could only rely on brute force and physical fitness to fight. Now… as long as I control myself well, I can barely count as a decent fighter, at least above passing grade.”

Don’t forget, with NZT-48 cheat mode, you could recall everything about fighting from TV, movies, even sports shows and martial arts tutorials. After recalling, even the most hopeless loser protagonist could easily take on ten guys at once.

It could even let the heroine instantly take out a billionaire’s bodyguard!
