Chapter 3

But Brian Carter vaguely recalled that in another story about his senior brother catching ghosts—still starring Stephen Chow as a rookie cop—there, Lanks was both a police officer and a Maoshan Taoist priest. He had a Taoist technique that involved inviting the patriarch to appear and bestow power, making things grow longer and longer—hands, feet, anything could be extended!

That Taoist technique required a proper ritual to worship the Maoshan patriarch and request the granting of power. Then, while standing still, your normal arms could stretch out to three or four meters long and retract freely back to normal.

Hands could do it, feet could do it—everything could be extended!

The improved little magical power that Brian Carter got from checking in could, with just a thought, make his left hand quickly grow longer and retract while lying down motionless. The right hand could do it too... and of course, all three legs as well.

Both hands and legs could also become thicker or thinner at will.

There was really no need to set up an altar, worship ancestors, or request power anymore—just a thought was enough.

“Could it be that this Lanks is the same person as the Taoist cop Mark Thompson from the ghost story with senior brother? If so, does that mean there really are ghosts and gods in this world?”

A thought flashed through his mind, but Brian Carter quickly stopped overthinking it. He was seriously considering breaking out of prison.

If he were his normal self, trying to escape from Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre would be nothing but a dream. But now, not only did he have a perfect invisibility technique and a little magical power, he had also received a reward from Teapot that doubled his physical strength and stamina.

If you can break out, who would want to stay in prison?

Stay longer to observe and plan? Plans never keep up with changes. Better to just rely on invisibility and magical powers to make a bold move. At worst, if the escape fails, he’d just get more time added to his sentence. He only had five years—how much more could they add?

When it comes to prison breaks, practice is the best experience. Isn’t it better to gain experience through action?

……

“It’s now 6:15. Everyone, please get up, tidy your area, and get ready for breakfast.”

As daylight broke, in the cell where Brian Carter was held, Teapot, Vaseline, and the others were just woken up by the electronic broadcast. Teapot yawned, stretched, got up, rubbed his eyes, and glanced around the cell.

He got out of bed, put on his slippers, and went to get his tea mug, waiting for the door to open. But when he picked up his mug, toothbrush, and toothpaste at the small sink near the squat toilet, Teapot suddenly turned and looked toward the sleeping area, scanning it again and again.

He glanced at the single squat toilet, then spoke in confusion, “Damn, where’s Brian? He’s gone?!”

Whoosh~

Lanks, Vaseline, and the others, who were still yawning and stretching, all froze, then quickly started shouting in alarm.

It was just a small eight-person cell, the space was clear at a glance. How could Brian Carter, a big guy over 1.8 meters tall, possibly hide?

This wasn’t a real dormitory—there were no wardrobes. This was a prison.

Two minutes later, when the guard came to open the cell door, he swept his eyes around and shouted angrily, “52363? 52363!”

Shouting as he opened the metal-barred cell door, the guard rushed in, looked left and right, and then blew his whistle at top speed.

Another minute or two passed, and the entire Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre was swept by the sound of alarms.

Some prisoners who had already left their cells were quickly herded back by the guards. Those whose doors hadn’t been opened yet were all shouting and making a commotion.

Many old hands could tell just from the sound that a prisoner had escaped. But… someone breaking out so early in the morning—wasn’t that a bit too exciting?

As the cell block was thrown into chaos, Brian Carter was carefully dodging the running figures, walking unhurriedly toward the area outside the cells.

He had made it out.

If he walked, his invisibility could last about an hour. But if he started running, the time would be greatly reduced.

Normally, he could jog ten kilometers in an hour before needing a break.

With invisibility on, even lying still was like jogging—so he’d be exhausted after an hour of invisibility. If he walked, half an hour was about the limit.

But after getting the reward from Teapot that doubled his stamina, the duration of his invisibility was also doubled.

When the guard opened the door just now, he was standing to the right of the iron door. As the guard pushed the door open and it folded to the left, the guard rushed in—and Brian Carter simply walked out.

Walking invisibly for an hour? He should be able to get out. Even if all the exits of Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre were closed, he just needed to find a car to hide in—even in a car trunk—then he could drop the invisibility and slowly recover his strength.

Having crossed over inexplicably and been framed and thrown in jail, Brian Carter didn’t know if there were any more main characters like the Teapot five in Lai Chi Kok for him to check in with… but he wasn’t planning to wait. If a bold escape failed, he could just explore more while serving extra time.

After all, he’d seen so many Hong Kong movies—Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre was nothing. When it came to prisons, Stanley was the most famous.

Chances were, there were more people like the Teapot five outside the prison, giving him more opportunities to check in.

Now that the check-in system was working, did the people of Hong Kong really think they could keep him locked up? Not a chance!

……

The cell where Brian Carter stayed last night.

Teapot, Vaseline, Exhaust Pipe, and the other five looked at each other in astonishment.
