Chapter 4

After several rounds of glaring at each other, Lanks finally stroked his chin and said, “Is that Brian really that amazing? Is he some kind of master thief? How did he open the door and slip away? Did any of you hear anything?”

The few people locked up already knew that the prison guards would search the cells from time to time, to prevent inmates from hiding contraband. If a master thief wanted to open a door, where would he even get a wire?

Lanks, being an undercover cop and skilled in Maoshan Taoist arts, hadn’t noticed a thing.

Vaseline bared his teeth and grumbled, “Damn it, after being cellmates for just one night he ran off? Didn’t even ask me to break out with him. When he comes back, I’m definitely going to beat him up.”

Chapter 003: Made a Killing

As it turned out, with the perfect version of the invisibility technique, Brian Carter found escaping from prison was actually quite easy—easier than he’d imagined!

He kept his eyes and ears open, dodging each police officer in advance, and made his way to the main entrance of the prison. The gate was temporarily closed, but after waiting ten minutes, a police car sped out of the prison, and he simply followed along and walked out.

Standing outside the main gate of Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre—it was the same gate where Teapot and the others were released in “Winners and Sinners”… except that when the Five Lucky Stars were released, only a small door in the big iron gate was opened.

Now, with the guards driving out to chase the escapee, the whole gate was wide open.

Apart from the prison, the area around the reception centre was just highways and hills—there was almost nowhere to hide. After walking steadily for about ten minutes, it had been just over half an hour since Brian Carter activated his invisibility.

Feeling his body start to tire, he quickly gave himself a pep talk—this was not the time to mess up. If he got caught, it was straight back to prison.

How much extra time would he get if caught escaping?

Just thinking about that made his fatigue fade a lot, and he felt energized again.

After another ten minutes or so, he was nearly three kilometers from the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre. Brian Carter saw an intersection a few hundred meters ahead and immediately quickened his pace in excitement.

He was still invisible as he stood at the intersection.

Looking around, he finally spotted a convertible truck stopped at a red light. Brian Carter rushed forward, grabbed the iron railing, climbed onto the truck, and hid himself among the cardboard boxes before deactivating his invisibility.

……

When the convertible truck stopped at a factory in Sham Shui Po, Brian Carter, who had rested for over half an hour, had regained much of his strength. He turned invisible again and wandered around the garment factory. After finding a set of clothes that fit, he happily left the factory grounds.

Standing by the roadside, watching the bustling traffic, he felt exhausted and hungry—he just wanted a big meal and then to find a place to sleep well.

Luckily, yesterday’s goofy five-man group—Vaseline and Curly—had given him a 200-yuan sign-in reward. With money in hand, he wasn’t afraid of going hungry.

Deliberately smudging his face with some dust and sweat, Brian Carter walked the streets, grabbing snacks at every food stall he passed—fish balls, beef offal, rice noodle rolls—he didn’t care if they suited his taste, he just bought them and ate heartily.

As he ate and walked, regaining his strength, a sudden gust of wind came from ahead.

Brian Carter didn’t even have time to dodge and was hit head-on. He staggered but was fine, while the person who bumped into him fell back and landed on the ground.

“Sorry, sorry, I was in a hurry to get to school and wasn’t watching where I was going…”

The one who fell was a long-haired schoolgirl in uniform, wearing black-rimmed glasses. As she looked up and apologized while getting up,

Brian Carter received a system prompt.

“Ding, congratulations on signing in with Grace Thompson, reward: one bottle of NZT-48. The host can claim it at any time.”

Grace Thompson?? The one getting up from the ground was clearly an eighteen- or nineteen-year-old “Little Dragon Girl,” wasn’t she? Even with those slightly dorky black-rimmed glasses, the youthful beauty of an eighteen- or nineteen-year-old “Little Dragon Girl” was still dazzling.

She even had a school badge on her chest—Jeanne d’Arc Girls’ Secondary School.

A bit dazed, he reached out and helped her up. Grace Thompson apologized again and then ran off with her backpack.

Suppressing his inner excitement, Brian Carter thought, “I originally thought this prison break was a bit reckless—no plan, no preparation, and I might have missed some other people I could sign in with at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre…”

“But a bottle of NZT-48—what a windfall!”

Growing up, he’d watched plenty of Hong Kong and Hollywood movies. While many of his peers liked gaming, chasing girls, watching short videos, or livestreams, Brian Carter wasn’t much interested in those—he just liked old movies and reading books.

Even if he couldn’t recall which story Grace Thompson was from, a bottle of NZT-48 was absolutely worth it.

This was the stuff that could supercharge the human brain, turning an ordinary person into a demigod.

From Hollywood’s “Limitless,” NZT-48 had massive side effects—one wrong move and you could die from it—but that was for people who took it regularly and became dependent.

If you only took one occasionally, there was no big problem.

Just like the protagonist’s girlfriend in that story—when being chased by the oil tycoon’s bodyguards, she couldn’t shake them off, even after asking passersby for help (some of whom were killed by the bodyguards), and was almost out of options.

One NZT, and she easily took down the oil tycoon’s bodyguards!

Afterwards, the girlfriend didn’t get hooked on NZT-48—she gave the pills to the protagonist and had no issues herself.
