Chapter 12

James Carter witnessed for the first time the intelligence of the beasts in the Evolution World. The herd of cattle maintained a perfect formation, taking turns to drink water one by one, then continued on their way, still in formation. As prey at the bottom of the food chain, these wild cattle didn’t give the three predators any chance to strike.

James Carter was very glad he was far enough from the waterhole; if he had been surrounded by a large group of beasts, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

After the cattle left, the cheetah and the two lions stared at each other.

Judging by its attitude, the cheetah seemed to be saying: What are you looking at?

And the two lions’ response seemed to say: Looking at you, so what?

The cheetah roared angrily, as if threatening: Try looking again!

The two lions’ fur bristled, conveying one message: Go ahead and try!

Then, the cheetah chickened out.

Both sides were intermediate primitive creatures; the cheetah was clearly at a disadvantage facing two opponents alone.

The two lions didn’t attack rashly either. Although they had the numbers, if it came down to a life-or-death fight, they wouldn’t gain much. In a bloody battle, the male lions might pay a heavy price—one dead and one wounded.

Suddenly, fear flashed in the eyes of all three beasts, and they fled in panic in different directions.

Rumble!

Heavy hoofbeats approached, making the ground tremble slightly.

A gigantic black wild boar charged over and crouched by the waterhole, gulping down water.

Hidden in the shadows, James Carter was terrified. The aura emanating from that giant black wild boar was even more powerful than the cheetah and the lions combined.

An advanced primitive creature!

James Carter would bet that this was a formidable advanced specimen.

He suddenly felt he’d been foolish and naive, stupid and reckless, even fantasizing about waiting at the spring’s source to ambush all sorts of little monsters… Now he was sure that if he rushed out, he’d be the one slaughtered.

The black wild boar drank more than ten liters of spring water, then its body suddenly began to tremble.

Its eyes were filled with boundless terror; it didn’t even have the courage to run, just lay by the waterhole, shivering.

An even more fearsome creature had appeared!

Three seemingly ordinary antelopes sprinted to the waterhole.

Two large antelopes protected a smaller one in the middle; it looked like parents bringing their young to drink.

James Carter was dumbfounded. On Earth, antelopes are destined to be prey, but in the Evolution World, they were so formidable that their mere presence suppressed the black wild boar, leaving it unable to move.

This bizarre scene, on the contrary, gave James Carter a glimmer of hope.

As long as one keeps evolving, even the weakest creatures can become strong. Jack was a living example—once just an ordinary stray dog, now able to kill low-level primitive beasts.

“To scare an advanced primitive wild boar into submission, what level are these three antelopes?”

“Special-class primitive creatures? Top-class primitive creatures?”

James Carter’s mind raced, coming up with all sorts of guesses.

But they were only guesses; the truth would have to be discovered slowly.

A vast, overwhelming aura suddenly enveloped the area within several hundred meters of the waterhole.

James Carter hadn’t even seen the owner of that aura, but was already scared out of his wits.

He didn’t dare breathe, cold sweat soaking his entire body.

Jack curled up on the ground, trembling, not daring to make a sound.

Terrifying!

This indescribable terror shook James Carter’s soul.

He had a premonition that the other party didn’t even need to lift a finger—just its aura alone could kill him.

The terror of the various creatures in the Evolution World had already surpassed the limits of his imagination.

Gradually, a white figure appeared ahead.

When the white figure stopped, James Carter finally saw clearly—it was a huge white deer.

The three antelopes didn’t flee; instead, they knelt on their front legs, showing extreme respect, as if worshipping a king.

The black wild boar also assumed a kneeling posture, its attitude as deferential as a commoner meeting the emperor.

Seeing these beasts behave so sensibly, the white deer withdrew its terrifying aura and instead released a gentle, soothing presence. That aura was truly magical, making one feel the warmth of spring, filling the heart with joy and a sense of auspiciousness.

James Carter recalled a book he’d read years ago, according to the Records of the Grand Historian: “The emperor’s park had white deer, their skins used as currency, their appearance a sign of auspicious omens, and white gold was made from them.”

In ancient Chinese mythology, the white deer is an auspicious beast.

The antlers on the white deer’s head glowed with the luster of mutton-fat jade, its snowy white fur spotless, as if it had descended from the heavens, not of this world. Its eyes shone with a divine light, as if able to see through fate and all things.

Those truth-penetrating eyes swept over the hiding place of man and dog.

James Carter felt as if struck by lightning, his pupils contracting, his body trembling uncontrollably.

With just a glance, the white deer’s gaze was like a thousand-pound hammer pounding his chest, making his internal organs churn.

Jack didn’t fare any better; it looked dispirited, instinctively kneeling on its front legs in a gesture of submission.

James Carter followed suit, adopting a “Bro, I kneel to you” posture.

In this way, the effect was surprisingly good—the white deer, showing great mercy, spared the man and the dog.

It lowered its head to drink, ignoring the other creatures nearby.

The black wild boar, as if granted amnesty, turned and ran off.
