After discovering a way to travel freely back and forth, Franklin Baker felt much more at ease. He never really had anything urgent to do, and as long as he could return whenever he missed his wife and children, it didn’t matter where he was… even if it was another world.
As for whether this world would pose a threat to Ethan Harris? He hadn’t noticed any such possibility for now. Maybe he could stay and observe a bit longer?
David Clark didn’t know that Franklin Baker was already considering settling down here. Although it was partly with the intention of keeping watch, even if David Clark found out, he wouldn’t mind.
Since Ethan Harris is the protagonist of that world and constantly suffers various invasions, it’s not surprising that people living there would worry about this issue. For this reason, David Clark truly had no interest in Ethan Harris; that world was too chaotic. Even if he had the power to invade other worlds, he wouldn’t choose that one. Besides, he didn’t have the ability to travel to other worlds at all.
“So how do you come back?” Compared to Laura Smith, who was concerned about how to return to her own world, David Clark was curious about something else: after going back, how did Franklin Baker come here again?
“The same way. As long as I think about coming here to you, I arrive.”
“……”
Even the straightforward David Clark was a bit speechless: “So you just pick any direction and walk?”
“Even simpler, you can just march in place.” On Franklin Baker’s face—full of a big beard and authority—there was a hint of humor. He had just tried it casually and didn’t expect it to actually work.
Listening to Franklin Baker’s explanation, David Clark now understood that for those who had been here, as long as they thought of this place and made a ‘walking’ gesture, they could come over. It was much easier than returning to their own world.
On the other hand, to leave, you had to walk out of the village in any direction; just wandering around inside the village wouldn’t work.
“I’ll give it a try.” After hearing Franklin Baker’s explanation, Laura Smith lost all interest in breakfast and immediately left the cabin, picking a random direction to walk.
David Clark quickly followed her outside, then stood at the door watching Laura Smith run off into the distance—he wanted to see what it looked like when Laura Smith left.
He didn’t have to wait long. Soon, he saw Laura Smith’s figure become semi-transparent, fading in and out until she gradually disappeared—basically the reverse of how they had appeared.
“So that’s what it looks like when you leave…” It was the first time Franklin Baker had seen it, since he couldn’t see what he looked like when arriving or leaving.
“How do you feel when you leave?” David Clark was very curious—what did Laura Smith and Franklin Baker feel like in that semi-transparent, in-between state? But the answer was nothing like he imagined.
“Nothing special. I’m just walking, and then everything blurs for a moment and I’m in another place.” There was no real process to this spatial transfer; it was just like taking a step forward, and in the next second, the surroundings had completely changed.
Just then, Laura Smith’s figure reappeared outside the village, still that faint, gradually solidifying silhouette, until finally Laura Smith’s form became clear.
“That’s really amazing!” Much like Franklin Baker, once she realized she could travel freely back and forth, Laura Smith stopped worrying about not being able to return and instead became curious about this miraculous situation. She really wanted to figure out what was going on—what was causing all this? Maybe there was something with mysterious powers hidden near the village, like ancient ruins or an altar.
However, she still remembered her companions. Maybe she’d have to wait until she reunited with them and the rescue team took them off the island before coming back to investigate this problem.
With her worries gone, Laura Smith naturally became troubled by other issues—she was hungry.
And it wasn’t just Laura Smith who was hungry; Franklin Baker was actually very hungry too. But as a guest, he was embarrassed to rummage around for food, and he wasn’t sure if this seemingly simple village had enough food stored. After all, as a powerful paladin, he had a big appetite.
After thinking for a moment, Franklin Baker suggested: why not look around for some game nearby?
“No need, there’s still venison in the kitchen from what I hunted yesterday—enough for the three of us.” It was a whole deer, and yesterday he and Laura Smith hadn’t eaten much. Now, with Franklin Baker joining, there was still more than enough for breakfast.
David Clark led the two to the wooden barrel where clean water was stored, took out a basin and a few clean cloths for them to wash up, and then the three of them made a hearty breakfast together: roasted venison and a soup of wild vegetables with some organ meat.
They all enjoyed this breakfast very much.
David Clark now had the motivation to keep working hard, to build up the village, welcome more people from different worlds, gain rewards from them, and learn special abilities like the Holy Light;
Laura Smith now knew how to return, and with David Clark’s help, she could come here for help whenever she ran into trouble—though she wasn’t sure if she could bring her companions here to take refuge. At the same time, she was curious about this strange and magical world, and planned to come back to uncover the truth once she was safe;
Franklin Baker felt this was a great place to retire. Here, no one knew him, he could live a peaceful and stable life, and could go home to see his wife and children whenever he wanted.
