Chapter 4

The voices of the two beautiful girls were truly pleasant to hear. But for a girl as beautiful as Emily Carter not to become a celebrity really seems like a waste. As for Grace Bennett, from my angle I could just vaguely see her chest. On such a hot day, people are already irritable, and besides, I’m a normal guy, right in the prime of adolescence—just one look and I can’t help but let my imagination run wild.

How wonderful it would be to have such a beautiful girl!

So cool... Huh? Suddenly, a strange thought swept through my mind. I was stunned for a moment, then broke out in a cold sweat. On such a hot day, I was burning up, sweating nonstop, but how come there wasn’t a single drop of sweat on them???

And it seemed like a chill was emanating from their bodies. Could it be that I’ve read too many fantasy stories? I deliberately patted Emily Carter. The beauty turned her head and glanced at me. “What is it? Why aren’t you continuing to read your novel?”

“Ah, well, I finished it. I just wanted to ask if you have any extracurricular books.” I tried my best to steady my voice, not letting it tremble, because the touch just now told me her skin was incredibly soft—absolutely top-notch—but in this kind of weather, it was so cool!!!

“Hmph, do you think we’re like you, always neglecting your proper duties? Don’t think that just because you’re smart you don’t have to work hard. This young lady will surpass you sooner or later!” Grace Bennett glared at me fiercely, her gaze icy cold.

At this moment, I had no mood to appreciate such beauty. My bones felt chilled. Thinking of things like vampires and such, goodness, there was only one thought in my mind: get out of here, as far away as possible!

“Th-this, I’ll go... rent another book.” Before I finished speaking, I dashed out like crazy. If someone measured me, I’d definitely break my own 100-meter record. The sun outside suddenly felt so warm, so lovely.

As soon as I disappeared, the two girls burst out laughing. “Grace, you’re so bad, why did you deliberately scare him? He’s just an ordinary person.”

“Hmph, who told that kid to take advantage of us? Besides, we had everything planned out, and he suddenly messed things up. How could I not teach him a lesson?”

“You’re just too mischievous.”

“Emily, heaven knows, earth knows, you know, I know—when that silly boy goes back, he’ll almost certainly think it was all an illusion.”

“...Do you think he might be?” Emily Carter’s words suddenly made the atmosphere quiet.

“Don’t overthink it. His eighteenth birthday was over half a month ago, and there was no reaction at all. If he were really one of us, he would have awakened long ago!”

“But it’s still possible to awaken after eighteen!” Emily Carter still refused to give up her last bit of hope. They had been waiting for half a year, but it had all come to nothing. She didn’t want to accept it!

“The chances of awakening after eighteen are very low. Even if he does awaken, he’d only be a lower-level ability user, which wouldn’t be of much help to us.” Grace Bennett spoke with determination, but her tone was also full of regret.

“We’ve wasted more than half a year here, and still failed. I really can’t accept it!”

At this moment, Grace Bennett looked at Emily Carter with a serious expression and said, “Emily, you’re not falling for that silly Henry Bennett, are you? That’s impossible!”

“I have nothing to do with him! If anyone does, it’s you.” Emily Carter immediately shot back.

“Hmph, I’m not interested in ordinary people!” Grace Bennett’s tone wasn’t as firm as usual.

“Really? With your personality, if anyone dared to take advantage of you like that, you’d probably have frozen him into a popsicle by now.” Emily Carter looked at Grace Bennett’s chest, which was much fuller than most college girls. Even as a fellow woman, she was mesmerized by the beautiful shape—let alone a man.

“You little perv, where are you looking? That’s this young lady’s—today I’m in a good mood, and since we’re classmates, I won’t hold it against him!” Grace Bennett’s gaze was a bit dazed. That strange contact just now left her with a lingering feeling—a strange sensation!

“Grace, how about we give him another chance tonight and see if we can help him awaken?” Emily Carter seemed to have made a big decision.

“Emily, you’re not falling for him just because of that day, that idiot’s heroics to save the beauty, are you?” Grace Bennett looked her partner up and down. An elite among the new humans, and yet she might like an ordinary human.

Ever since two thousand years ago, some humans began to mutate. These people’s spiritual level could connect with subspace, allowing them to draw energy from that space into this world for use. Depending on the individual, they would have different forms and abilities. These energy beings are generally called “envoys,” and this group calls themselves new humans. For example, her envoy is the “Queen of Ice,” able to control cold air. She awakened at sixteen, and it’s said that the earlier one awakens, the stronger their power. Generally, awakening happens before eighteen, especially in the month leading up to one’s eighteenth birthday. Those who awaken after eighteen are much weaker, and their status in the circle is relatively low—though not always.

As for Emily Carter, she awakened at the age of ten. From confusion to constant searching, she learned through the internet about information that seemed fantastical to others but were actually messages from her own kind, and began her journey of searching. But for a student, this wasn’t easy, and she couldn’t separate herself from society.
