Chapter 1

Chapter One: Witnessing a Murder Scene

"Evelyn York will never like you, so why do you keep fixating on her?" I must have told myself this dozens of times, but I still couldn't help waiting for her on this street. This was the ninety-eighth time I had waited for Evelyn York on her way home. As a rookie in the game of love, the only method I knew to pursue a girl was this clumsy approach.

I'm a first-year high school student, and I pretty much fell for Evelyn York from Class Six the first time I saw her. After spending more than half a semester chasing her, I had made little progress and even caused a lot of negative effects. For example, Evelyn York would often change her route home, leaving me waiting in vain for hours.

"Sigh, it's almost nine o'clock. I should just go home."

I rubbed my aching, numb thighs and was about to get up from my hiding spot in the corner when suddenly, several men with hurried footsteps burst into the alley where I was hiding.

"Benjamin Ford, if you don't hand over that thing, you'll die here today!"

Hearing this, I shuddered all over and didn't dare move an inch. "I've run into murderers!" As if to confirm my fears, the men started fighting after a brief argument. They all seemed to know martial arts, and the fight was even more intense and exciting than in the movies. I secretly watched, completely enthralled.

It wasn't until a man in a black suit was thrown to the ground beside me, his eyes staring lifelessly at the sky, his throat slashed open, and a spray of blood splattered next to me, that I finally felt a chill run down my spine.

"They really killed someone!"

It was the first time I'd ever seen a dead body, and I was so scared I couldn't move. My eyes were fixed on the short knife clutched in the dead man's hand.

"Will they kill me to silence me? I hope they don't find me! Damn it, I should've listened and stopped chasing Evelyn York. If I were home right now, I wouldn't have run into this!"

"Benjamin Ford, you're pretty good at fighting—no wonder, since you used to be a SWAT officer. The brothers didn't know you were undercover before, and they actually admired you. But today, you won't make it out alive. Where's the thing? Speak up!"

The unlucky guy being hunted, even though he'd killed four people, was covered in blood from being hacked at himself. I couldn't tell he was a cop, but I figured I couldn't count on this police officer to save me—he needed saving himself.

"Axe, you've always been a real man in the organization. Give me a quick death. There's no way I'm handing that thing over to you!"

"Hmph, Benjamin Ford, without that thing, Mr. Grant will definitely kill us. Do you think I'll let you go?" The man called Axel looked vicious. With a wave of his hand, the two remaining killers each slashed at Benjamin Ford's legs, then started searching him.

Benjamin Ford must have been in terrible pain, groaning softly and rolling around the alley. The two men in black couldn't hold him down and took a few steps forward, immediately spotting me.

"Axel bro, there's a kid!"

Benjamin Ford saw the panic in my eyes and was about to shout for me to run, but when he saw Axel blocking the alley's exit, he immediately showed a helpless look. He knew there was no way I could escape from Axel.

"Kill him too!"

Hearing that cold order, my hair stood on end in terror. I was about to scream when I suddenly heard Benjamin Ford whisper, "Swallow this quickly. If you see our people, tell them Mr. Grant is..."

Before I could react, Benjamin Ford stuffed something into my mouth. As the two men in black and the guy called Axel charged at me with horrified faces, a white light flared from my body, and I vanished into the night air.

Axel's eyes immediately turned red, bloodshot, as he roared, "Benjamin Ford, I'll kill you!"

The two men in black were at a loss, looking at Axel and asking in low voices, "Axel bro, what do we do? Mr. Grant won't let us off!"

Without a word, Axel snatched a knife from his subordinate and stabbed it hard into Benjamin Ford's chest, cursing under his breath, "Do you realize, because of you, I can't go back and report. Mr. Grant will order all of us killed!"

Benjamin Ford seemed to want to say something, but his face darkened. He managed a faint smile, then his head lolled to the side and he died.

"At least you died quickly, damn it!" Axel stood up and took a step back, then suddenly swayed from side to side. His two subordinates immediately showed looks of disbelief and slowly collapsed to the ground.

"You two idiots, better I end it for you than let you die at Mr. Grant's hands. Now that we've lost that thing, Mr. Grant definitely won't spare anyone who knows the truth!"
