The people observing outside, including Henry, broke into smiles. Clearly, the massage chair wasn’t here, so they still had a chance.
David Thompson helped pack things up, but Henry waved his hand and said, “No, brother, for God’s sake, just be my assistant.”
This moved David Thompson deeply. “Thank you, Boss Fox, but you really don’t have to look after me like this…”
“Damn it, who’s looking after you? Don’t you dare use that damn, bromantic tone with me! I’m just worried you don’t know anything and might miss something valuable!”
Hearing this, David Thompson decisively stuck out his middle finger: Screw you.
“This chair is nice. Put it to the left of the door, I think we can sell it for fifty bucks. Hmm, the bookshelf is good too, fifty bucks shouldn’t be a problem…”
“Too bad, damn it, this safe is broken, we’ll have to throw it out as trash. Oh my God, our luck is terrible, this oven is broken too.”
Shaking his head, Henry went to pull off the tarp in front of him, and then—a genuine leather massage chair with a golden shell appeared right before his eyes!
Because the warehouse was sealed and not dusty, and the chair was covered with a tarp, the golden shell of the massage chair was as shiny and new as a mirror, perfectly preserved.
Henry was stunned for a moment, then shouted in delight, “Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Ahhh, the massage chair, the massage chair! I got the massage chair!”
Hearing his shout, the other bidders nearby quickly poked their heads over to look. When they saw the brand-new, massive massage chair, they all showed expressions of envy, jealousy, and resentment.
Especially that well-off Black man—he looked like he wanted to snatch the massage chair right then and there.
With the chair in hand, the other small items didn’t matter anymore.
Henry called for a box truck, and they loaded everything up, cleaned out the warehouse before dark, and left.
Back home, after unloading the chair, Henry plugged it in, rubbed his hands together excitedly, and said, “Let me see how awesome a twenty-thousand-dollar massage chair feels!”
He flipped the switch, and the LCD screens on both armrests lit up. Henry sat down and pressed the start button, waiting in anticipation for a relaxing massage—but the chair didn’t move at all.
Seeing this, David Thompson got anxious. “Shit, don’t tell me it’s broken?”
Henry said confidently, “Impossible. God let us win this chair to change my business fate, so He wouldn’t give us a broken chair. Hold on, I’ll look up the user manual online.”
After fiddling with it for a while, he looked at David Thompson in frustration. “According to the manual, the motor is really broken! Damn it, this is why I don’t trust God—He’s just not reliable!”
“So what do we do? Get it repaired?”
“It’s the motor that’s broken—the main control engine. Repairs will cost at least three thousand bucks. Do you have three thousand?”
“Didn’t you pawn your car? Don’t tell me your car didn’t even get you three thousand bucks!”
“Yeah, the car got me twenty-five hundred, and now I’ve got a thousand left. Do you have two thousand?” Henry looked at David Thompson hopefully.
David Thompson pulled out his wallet to show him: “I don’t even have five damn coins left!”
The two exchanged a look, and both understood the meaning of one word on each other’s faces: broke!
Chapter 0007: Stop Eating, I’ll Pay
After all sorts of research and experiments, the two finally confirmed that the massage chair really was broken.
Henry said dejectedly, “Shit, insurance salesmen are all sharp. I should have realized—if this massage chair wasn’t broken, why would he get rid of it?”
David Thompson asked, “So it’s worthless now?”
Henry shook his head. “Not exactly, but its value is cut in half. I estimated we could sell it for ten thousand, but now it’s probably only worth five or six thousand.”
“Didn’t you say it was worth twenty thousand?”
“I said a new one is twenty thousand. This is used, OK? Value is halved!”
The twelve thousand they’d hoped for turned into three thousand, and David Thompson’s excitement instantly turned to bitter disappointment.
He asked, unwilling to give up, “Can’t we fix it ourselves? And how did your car only get you twenty-five hundred?”
The Ford F150 is the most popular pickup in America, starting at twenty-six thousand. He figured it should have gotten at least ten thousand as collateral.
Henry explained, “First, my truck has two hundred thousand miles on it, and it’s done a lot of heavy work, so its value dropped a lot. Second, I pawned it, not sold it. Pawn prices are always low, but when I redeem it later, the fee is low too.”
“So what about borrowing money for repairs?”
“Do you have any friends you can borrow from? I don’t.” Henry said bluntly.
David Thompson glanced at him sideways. “I only have Hannah I could borrow from.”
Henry immediately stood up and said firmly, “Absolutely not! Let’s just sell it as-is, even broken we can make some money. We’ll have our starting capital!”
David Thompson had no objections. Henry’s protectiveness toward his sister left a good impression on him. If this guy had actually encouraged him to borrow from Hannah, he would have only worked with Henry this one time.
Anyone who’d even think about touching his own sister’s money—he’d keep his distance.
That night, David Thompson slept in the bedroom, while Henry slept right on the massage chair.
The massage chair really was luxurious and high-tech. It could recline completely flat, and its wide, soft seat wrapped around the body—more comfortable than sleeping in a bed.
